(Old owner's inscr. in ink on title page 'de centrigtizey'?). Second enlarged edition (by appr. 40 pages), more interesting than the first because of the survey of prices of pearls and diamonds in chs. XVII and XVIII (pp. 130 - 138), and the "Suite du chapitre de la perle" (pp. 74 - 90) dealing with South America. Moreover there's a chapter "Contre les chercheurs de la pierre philosophale et souffleurs d'Arquemie" [sic].: Sinkankas, vol. I, 593: second enlarged edition. 'Robert de Berquen, goldsmith of Paris; Biogr. Univ., 4, p. 536 states that he is the son of the so-called "inventor" of diamond bruting & polishing in Europe, namely Louis de Berquen... Very early and important treatise on gemstones, gold & silver, but with far more space devoted to gemstones. The first chapter attempts to reconcile differing views of various writers, as cited by Berquen, on the origin of gemstones and precious metals, with following chapters taking up the principal gemstones, and some minor ones, as diamond, sapphire, topaz, ruby, spinel, emerald ... [the second edition] Entirely reset, with additions to some chapters ...The chapter on pearl is augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production. ... The chapter on gold and other metals, is also enlarged, pp. 111 - 120, by remarks on the merits of gold and other metals, and by the comments of the celebrated alchemist Nicolas Flamel (d. 1418) on the philosopher's stone and alchemical attempts to transmute metals ... New chapters compromise Ch 17, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quantity, and Ch 18 on pricing of pearls. In terms of substance, this edition is considerably superior to the first [1661]; both are rare.': Sabin, 4957: Brunet VI (Table), item 4780: John Carter Brown libr. He also explained the aetiology and mechanism of caisson disease.': Norman collection 218:'Bert settled a controversy by proving experimentally that high-altitude sickness was caused by the diminution of oxygen pressure and not by the reduction of barometric pressure per se; this was the first application of Dalton's law of partial pressure to human respiration. FELIX MERITIS.- FEESTZANGEN.- W.H.WARNSINCK.- J.G.BERTELMAN [MUSIC]
Feestzangen ter gelegenheid van het Vijftigjarig bestaan der Maatschappij Felix Meritis; Door den Heer W.H.Warnsinck, Bsz., de Muzijk gecomponeerd door den Heer J.G. Bertelman. Uitgevoerd op Dingsdag den 6den November 1827.

Very nice and collectable Felix Meritis item containing Warnsinck's text set to music by Bertelman on the occassion of the 50th anniversary of the Society. The society "Felix Merites" had been founded by the engineer Willem Writs in 1776 and aimed to stimulate the interest of the general public in arts and sciences. In its day the society was said to have a 'progressive' character. The new building, designed by the architect Husley, may still be found at Keizersgracht 324 and is one of the most beautiful representations of late 18th century architecture. The building boasted a small concert hall, a "Salle de Physique", a chemical workshop, a drawing room and an observatory. The building was badly damaged by fire in 1932, but restored to its old glory. There is a rare set of 4 large engravings, exisiting in proofs before all letters and with all letters, depicting all the main rooms: music room, drawing room, auditorium and physics room.

BERTHELOT, (P.E.), M.
Leçons sur la méthodes générales de synthèse en chimie organique,...
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1864. Very good recent hlf. red mor. over red buckram cl. brds. (XXI, II, 524 pp.). Duveen 72: Partington, IV, 465/477: Caillet 1066: Garrison 653: Darmstaedter ilc.: The fundamental conception that uinderlays all Berthelot's chemical works was that all chemical phenomena depend on the action of physical forces which can be determined and measured. Berthelot's work is astonishing in its volume, originality and importance. This book is a continuation of the ideas in his 'Chimie organique fondée sur la synthèse.' First edition.

Ad 2) DSB X, 360: "Pasteur unexpectedly achieved the transformation (of tartaris into racemic acid) in May 1853 by heating cinchonine tartrate....In the memoir (1 Aug.1853) in which he announced these two discoveries, Pasteur disclosed a new method for separating racemic acid into its left- and right-handed components. Although introduced by Pasteur only for the case of racemic acid, this new method clearly had wider applicability and was soon used to separate the left- and right-handed components in other 'racemic substances', Darmstädter. 543: The discovery of Chinicin was announced earlier in 1853 and is fully elaborated upon here. Both papers here offered belong to a series of important research papers focussing on the asymmetry of molecules. Ad 1) DSB vol. II, pp. 63-72: Berthelot's most important contribution in his work on Glycerin was to introduce the concept (and name) of polyatomic alcohols, but hardly less important was his synthesis of stearin and palmitin, the chief constituents or ordinary hard fats.': Partington IV, pp. 474 - 477:
