After coming out in society around 1900, she embarked on a lifelong career of writing fiction and non-fiction. Along the way meeting celebrities such as Maxim Gorki, Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau, Paul Valéry, Rilke, Winston Churchill, Alfonso XIII of Spain, Ramsay Macdonald, Vita Sackville - West, Philip Sassoon, the list goes on and on.
