W. 30 original dry-point engravings [w. 1 full page front.] by Ceria, tissueguards preserved. In fine contemp. half dark blue mor., over gilt green paper brds. Head-bands in alternating yellow and blue. (Lower cover some offsetting from another [leatherbound] book, spine in compartments. (Original cream coloured (pr.) wrs. preserved.). (Signed dedication by the author to Jules Henry, dated 1934). First illustrated edition, originally published 1927. One of 315 copies on Vélin de Hollande or 'Pannekoek' paper. This is number 72. The signed autograph dedication reads: 'Á monsieur Jules Henry le farisieu aux Etats Unies, "Catherine" en Amerique, reconnaissante. Princesse Bibesco 13 Octobre 1934.'': Carteret, Le Trésor du Bibliophile, vol. IV, p. 72: 'Prémiere édition illustrée cotée, surtout en grand papier...': On the illustrator Ceria see Bénézit, vol. II, pp. 622 - 623 Edmond Ceria [1884 - 1955]: Martha Lucia Bibescu [1886 - 1973], spent her early childhood on the Lahovary estates and in Biarritz. She met Crown Prince Ferdinand, Heir Apparent to the Romanian throne, but a year later married Prince George III Valentin Bibescu, from one of the country's aristocratic families. After coming out in society around 1900, she embarked on a lifelong career of writing fiction and non-fiction. Along the way meeting celebrities such as Maxim Gorki, Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau, Paul Valéry, Rilke, Winston Churchill, Alfonso XIII of Spain, Ramsay Macdonald, Vita Sackville - West, Philip Sassoon, the list goes on and on.
