¶ Albert Eckhout: Een Hollandse kunstenaar in Brazilië is een uitgebreid en rijk geillustreerde uitgave over leven en werk van de weinig bekende schilder Albert Eckhout (c.1610-1066). Samen met de Haarlemse landschapschilder Frans Post (c.1612-1680) was Eckhout in Brazilië werkzaam aan het hof van Johan Maurits (1604-1679), graaf van Nassau-Siegen. De militair Johan Maurits, die ook bekendheid geniet als de bouwheer van het Haagse Mauritshuis, was van 1636 tot 1644 gouverneur-generaal van de Nederlandse kolonie in Noordoost-Brazilië. Als verlicht heerser was hij niet alleen geïnteresseeerd in de winstgevendheid van het land, maar ook in de bevolking en het planten- en dierenrijk. Eckhout geniet vooral bekendheid als schilder van een reeks voorstellingen van de inwoners van Brazilië en een set van 12 stillevens, die zich alle sinds 1654 in Kopenhagen bevinden. Zij kwamen daar terecht als schenking van Johan Maurits aan de Deense koning Frederik III. Behalve schilder was Eckhout echter ook een begenadigd tekenaar. Zijn tekeningen van de Braziliaanse mensen, planten en dieren getuigen van een uitstekend observatievermogen. Daarnaast vormen de bladen evenals de schilderijen een unieke bron van informatie over het zeventiende-eeuwse Brazilië

No written sources describing him or his work have ever been discovered. His existence is documented only by some 50 surviving works which can hardly be compared with those of his contemporaries. His works, in their austerity and sometimes oppressive silence, seem unexpectedly modern, and have been compared to the paintings of Vilhelm Hammersh¿i. With detective-like investigative flair, and on the basis of extensive technical examinations of the paintings, this monograph explores the mysterious pictures of this rediscovered painter.
