Process. Design Drawings from the Rijksmuseum 1500 - 1900.
11 2022, (22 x 28 cm), 464 pp. English text numerous ills,, softcover

Fucci, Robert:, Drawn to Life. Master Drawings from the Age of Rembrandt in the Peck Collection at the Ackland Art Museum.
Fucci, Robert:
Drawn to Life. Master Drawings from the Age of Rembrandt in the Peck Collection at the Ackland Art Museum.
09 2022, 24,5 x 28 cm), 288 pp. English, 350 colour ills., hardcover and dutswrappers.
¶ This beautifully illustrated catalogue presents a selection of exceptional seventeenth-century Dutch drawings from the Peck Collection in the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Featuring many previously unpublished and rarely exhibited works, the catalogue brings together examples by some of the best-known artists of the era such as Rembrandt, Jacques de Gheyn II, Samuel van Hoogstraten, and Frans van Mieris. The collection was donated to the museum in 2017 by the late Drs. Sheldon and Leena Peck. The transformative gift is comprised of over 130 largely seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch and Flemish drawings, establishing the Ackland as one of a handful of university art museums in the United States where northern European drawings can be studied in depth. Drawn to Life presents around 70 works from this exceptional and diverse group of drawings amassed by the Pecks over four decades. Featuring new research and fresh insights into seventeenth-century drawing practice, the catalogue and accompanyingexhibition celebrates the creativity and technical skills of Dutch artists who explored the beauty of the natural world and the multifaceted aspects of humanity. The catalogue features a broad selection of scenes of everyday life, landscapes, biblical and historical scenes, portraits, and preparatory studies, forming a dynamic and representative group of Dutch drawings made by some of the most outstanding artists of the period, including Abraham Bloemaert, Jacob van Ruisdael, Esaias van de Velde, Bartholomeus Breenbergh, Pieter Molijn, Aelbert Cuyp, Adriaen van Ostade, Ferdinand Bol, Nicolaes Maes, Jan Lievens, Gerard ter Borch, Adriaen van de Velde, Nicolaes Berchem, and Cornelis Dusart. Key sheets of remarkable quality by lesser known artists such as Guillam Dubois, Herman Naiwincx, Willem Romeyn, and Jacob van der Ulft, also comprise a core strength of the collection, and serve as a testament to the visual acuity of the Pecks as collectors. At the heart of the Peck Collection are several sheets by Rembrandt, including the sublime Noli me Tangere; a beautifully rendered late landscape, Canal and Boats with a Distant View of Amsterdam; and the superbly charming Studies of Women and Children, which was the last of Rembrandt's seventeen known drawings with an inscription in his own hand to reach a public collection. Meticulously researched and written by Robert Fucci, Ph.D., Drawn to Life introduces both scholars and drawings enthusiasts to the depth and beauty of the Peck Collection at the Ackland Art Museum.

BISSCHOP - Gelder, Jan Gerrit & Ingrid Jost:, Jan de Bisschop and his icones & paradigmata. Classical Antiquities and Italian Dawings for Artistic Instruction in Seventeenth Century Holland. , Volume 1 + 2.
BISSCHOP - Gelder, Jan Gerrit & Ingrid Jost:
Jan de Bisschop and his icones & paradigmata. Classical Antiquities and Italian Dawings for Artistic Instruction in Seventeenth Century Holland. , Volume 1 + 2.
Doornspijk 1985, 2 volumes. Text volume 320 pp. + Facsimile volume: Engraved title, 4 pp., 50 plates, typogr. title, 4 pp., 50 plates, typogr. title, engraved title, 97 plates. Cloth bound with dustjacket.
¶ BOOKSALE A facsime edition of the editions 1668, 1669-1671 of the Icones and Paradigmata. Edited by Keith Andrews. Condition: New ! Reprinted in the facsimile-volume are the first edition of the Signorum veterum icones and the second edition of the Paradigmata graphices variorum artificium, Voor-Beelden der Teken-konst van verscheyde Meesters. Both works consist of text and a series of etchings reproducing works of art. Extensive discussions of all aspects of these are given in the text-volume, including comments on each of the works of art in question. The texts of the dedications are important inasmuch as they contain the first exposition to appear in print of the classicist theory of art in the Northern Netherlands, which was clearly derived from France. The works of art reproduced in the plates are either antique or Italian, sculpture in the Icones, drawings plus some sculpture in the Paradigmata . De Bisschop does not seem to have copied prints in making his plates and he hardly made any drawings of sculpture while he was in Rome himself, so that his choice of subjects for both works was determined in the first instance by the same criterion, i.e. the material available in the Northern Netherlands, whether actual sculpture or drawings of sculpture, drawings or copies of drawings. Notwithstanding this limitation the plates of the Icones are important in several respects. They belong among the documentary material for the post-antique history of the antique sculptures, some of them showing little known or even unknown sixteenth- and seventeenth-century states of preservation, others being the only or the earliest known reproductions of the works in question. In some instances, including works from the Arundel collection, the etchings may even be said to be of high documentary value. This also holds good for the now lost intermediary drawings which De Bisschop used as the immediate basis for his work, for without his publication we would know nothing of the drawings after the antique made by Jacques de Gheyn III in England and France and we would probably be equally ignorant of the fact that - among others- Poelenburgh, too, made careful drawings of antique sculptures. The Paradigmata is significant in similar ways. Each work of art reproduced in the Icones and Paradigmata is commented. No connected study has so far been made of the interest in works of art of the past in the Northern Netherlands or of the history of collecting in the Northern Netherlands.

Breugel and Beyond. Netherlandish Drawings in the Royal Library of Belgium 1500-1800.
06 2022, (24 x 30,5 cm), 392 pp. English, numerous ills., hardcover.
¶ Awe-inspiring reference work on the Flemish and Dutch art of drawing from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, with masterly drawings from the collection of the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR). The Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels houses the largest collection of drawings in the country. Among its highlights are works by leading artists of the Low Countries, including Pieter Bruegel I, Joris Hoefnagel, Hendrick Goltzius, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Jacques Jordaens. As the library's collection has been little studied up to now, it is largely unknown to scholars and the general public. To acquaint a wider audience with these important works of art, this richly illustrated publication brings together for the first time over one hundred master drawings from the Royal Library's vaults. Not only new art-historical insights are presented, but also numerous rediscovered drawings and revised attributions to artists such as Maarten van Heemskerck and Karel van Mander. This carefully researched book, written by thirty specialists in the field, aims to make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the history of Netherlandish drawing from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries.

Jenkins, Catherine & Nadine M. Orenstein & Freyda Spira:
The Renaissance of Etching.
11 2019, (22,9 x 26,7 cm), 304 pp., 237 colour ills.,, hardcover
¶ The first comprehensive look at the origins and diffusion across Europe of the etched print during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The etching of images on metal, originally used as a method for decorating armor, was first employed as a printmaking technique at the end of the 15th century. This in-depth study explores the origins of the etched print, its evolution from decorative technique to fine art, and its spread across Europe in the early Renaissance, leading to the professionalization of the field in the Netherlands in the 1550s. Beautifully illustrated, this book features the work of familiar Renaissance artists, including Albrecht Dürer, Jan Gossart, Pieter Breughel the Elder, and Parmigianino, as well as lesser known practitioners, such as Daniel Hopfer and Lucas van Leyden, whose pioneering work paved the way for later printmakers like Rembrandt and Goya. The book also includes a clear and fascinating description of the etching process, as well as an investigation of how the medium allowed artists to create highly detailed prints that were more durable than engravings and more delicate than woodblocks.
