¶ De Amsterdamse kunsthandelaar Piet de Boer (1894-1974) heeft in de loop van zijn leven een belangrijke verzameling schilderijen en tekeningen opgebouwd die hij in 1964 besloot onder te brengen in de Stichting P. en N. de Boer. Dit boek bevat een prachtige selectie die de reikwijdte van zijn oogst laat zien: van tekeningen en schilderijen van Hendrick Goltzius, Jacques de Gheyn en tal van andere meesters uit de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw tot een kleine kern werken van Vincent van Gogh. Zijn voorkeur lag bij tekeningen en schilderijen met een tijdloze kwaliteit. Tal van bladen die hij samenbracht verbluffen door hun moderniteit en hun ongekend gave staat van conservering. Bij de schilderijen is een groep vroege bloemstillevens en ook bij de tekeningen frapperen naar de natuur geobserveerde bloemen, insecten en andere dieren die herinneren aan zijn opleiding als bioloog. Een groep kunsthistorici is verantwoordelijk voor de teksten in dit kleurrijke boek dat een hommage wil zijn aan het kwaliteitsgevoel en het grote kennerschap van een verzamelaar die volledig zijn eigen gang is gegaan.
