Globus caelestis Cufico-Arabicus Veliterni Musei Borgiani ... illustratus. Praemissa ejusdem De Arabum astronomia dissertatione et adjectis duabus epistolis Cl. Josephi Toaldi.Padua, Seminary printing office, 1790. Small folio (21.5 x 29.5 cm). With 3 large folding engraved plates. Contemporary green half calf, gold-tooled spine, marbled sides.
[16], CCXIX, [9] pp.First and only edition of a rare study describing and illustrating (with all elements needed to construction a 3D facsimile) one of the most splendid Islamic globes ever made, a celestial globe with Cufic lettering in the Borgia Museum at Velletri (now at the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples). The Syrian mathematician Qaysar ibn Abu al-Qasim (1178/79-1251) made the bronze globe with inlaid silver and copper (22 cm diameter) in 622 AH (1225/26 CE) for the fourth Ayyubid Sultan of Egypt, al-Malik al-Kamil Muhammad (ca. 1177-1238). The three folding plates show measured drawings (apparently original size, though without a scale) of the components of the celestial globe, with 1025 stars and 48 constellations, designed so that they could be cut out and assembled around a globe body: the first shows the meridian and horizon rings with 2 gnomon scales (for the base) and a small view of the assembled globe, the second shows the northern hemisphere and the third the southern hemisphere. Mediaeval Arabic astronomers used celestial globes to help solve various problems in astronomy far in advance of their European contemporaries. The seminary printing office in Padova, established 1684, had its own typefoundry and had non-Latin types (including Arabic) cut for its first books, published in 1685.Old library shelfmark label on the inside of the front board. The hinges and the head and foot of the spine somewhat worn. Otherwise in fine condition.l Brunet VI, 8185; DG 7.9265; M. H. ASTLEY, John.
The art of riding, set foorth in a breefe treatise, with a due interpretation out of certeine places alledged out of Xenophon, and Gryson ...London, Henry Denham, 1584. 4to. Gold-tooled red morocco (ca. 1890) by Riviere & son; rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down.
[8], 79, [1] pp.Rare first (and only early) edition of one of the earliest English treatises on horsemanship, by John Astley (ca. 1507-1596), derived in part from Xenophon, Federico Grisone and other authors, and in part from Astley's own experience. Though sometimes described as an English translation of Xenophon's treatise (in English called On horsemanship), Astley's own contributions make it more than that. While nearly all early works on horsemanship seem harsh today and some even sadistic, Astley (like Xenophon) favoured persuasion over brutality. With the first three leaves somewhat browned and their upper outside corners skilfully and unobtrusively restored, slightly affecting the corner of one headpiece and a few letters of the text, and a tear in the fourth leaf restored without loss, but otherwise in good condition, with only an occasional minor blemish. A rare classic of horsemanship deserving pride of place in any collection on the subject.l Dejager, Great books on horsemanship (2014), 38; Huth, p. 11; Podeschi 12; STC 884 (8 complete & 2 incomplete copies).

111, [1] pp.A very rare early seventeenth-century Dutch book on astronomy, compiling the knowledge of the German astronomer, mathematician and cartographer Peter Apian (1495-1552). A great work on cosmography, astronomy, perspective and many related subjects. The book is subdivided into six parts, highlighting the scales and course of planets, the principles of the zodiac signs and their correct identification, the calculation of heights and distances as well as the instruments used for calculation and measurement. All of this rendered in readable explanations and numerous clarifying woodcut illustrations. The book showcases marvelous woodcut illustrations of volvelles, which are rotating parts of a paper construction known as a wheel chart used to illustrate the position and movement of celestial bodies. Volvelles are recognized as early versions of paper analogue computers and have been utilised in various fields for organization and calculation. The origins of volvelles can be traced back to astronomy books, as well as certain Arabic treatises on humoral medicine and the Persian astronomer Abu Rayhan Biruni (circa 1000), who played a significant role in their development. Throughout the book, the author compiled images taken from Apian’s influential works. It is unclear who compiled this work as the title page states only the initials S.D.V.B. The work later found its way into the German language in an Ingolstadt edition from 1533, titles Instrument buch, here clearly putting the emphasis on the tools, rather than the calculations and practical astronomy. With the bookplate of Buijnsters-Smets on the front paste-down. The base of the spine is slightly damaged, the boards are slightly dust-soiled, internally very slightly browned and foxed throughoutl Light damage to spine and book block slighty detached at bottom, some browning and foxing. 40, 23, [1 blank] pp. plus maps and plate of scales.A surprisingly rare pocket atlas illustrating the theatre of the "tegenwoordigen" (present) war, probably meaning the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) but possibly the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The title-page notes that it is suited for officers, travellers and lovers of geography to carry in a pocket. The text (in Dutch) gives a geographic description only of "Duytsland" (Germany), including Austria, Bohemia and a few other areas, whereas the maps also cover the Low Countries, the English Channel, northwest France and to the east as far as Warsaw, Krakow and Belgrade. The 23 detail maps were designed so that they could be assembled with the key map to make a single wall map, whose cartographic image would measure 53 x 90 cm.With a contemporary owner's, bookplate, embossed stamp and library labels. Double-page title-page and 39 double-page maps.Second known copy of a pocket-atlas, published at Antwerp but containing a selection of the maps of the Low Countries originally published by Jacob Aertsz. Colom at Amsterdam in 1635 with the title De Vyerighe Colom, the title Colom had first used for his famous pilot guide in 1632, and the name he had given to his Amsterdam printing office, where he worked from 1622 to his death in 1673 as a bookseller, printer and mapmaker. The only other copy known is at the Royal Library in Brussels. The Vyerighe Colom, with 47 maps and 3 plates, and with extensive text in Dutch and French, went through several editions in the 17th century, but it was once thought that all editions before his death in 1673 had been published at Amsterdam by Colom himself. The Royal Library copy, like the present one, contains 39 maps, but each contains one map not in the other, so there are forty in total: the present copy includes “Drentiae”, not in the Royal Library copy, which includes “Le terres entre la Meuse Vahal et Rhin”, not present here. The maps are also bound in a different order. The present edition is of great interest and gives cause to review Colom's activities. It is printed from Colom’s plates, so Colom may have licenced the Antwerp publisher to produce a variant edition of his Vyerighe Colom to broaden his market, possibly reacting to the signing of the Peace of Münster in 1648, which finally ended the Eighty Years’ War and opened trade and communication between the northern and southern Low Countries. Jan Huyssens made an entirely new and practical atlas out of Colom's Vyerighe Colom. He omitted all text and the three plates that do not show maps, and selected only maps of general interest, leaving out the map of the ancient Low Countries and such typical Dutch maps as the separate maps of the polders De Zype, Beemster, Wormer, Purmer, Byllemermeer and Waterland, also - at least in the present copy - completely rearranging the maps, more in order of their geographical sequence. The title suggests that Huyssens originally planned to include a text, so the present extremely rare edition may be the only surviving result of an abandoned project.l Koeman & Van der Krogt 365.23 (IIIB, pp. 644-645) (2 copies: the present & Royal Library Brussels); UniCat 99095764 (Royal Library Brussels only); cf. [4], XCVI, 157 pp.First and rare edition of the first French-Vietnamese (Annamese) vocabulary. Louis Aubaret (1825-1894), a naval officer, orientalist, and diplomat, authored this significant early dictionary for the Vietnamese language, which was then known as Annamese. The publication is indicative of the exceptional quality of French oriental scholarship in the 19th century. The dictionary was printed at the behest of Vice-Admiral Charner, under whom Aubaret participated in the capture of Saigon. This work was Aubaret's debut published work.Aubaret described how he had overcome the particular challenger of transcription in his extensive grammatical introduction to the language: “although the main difficulty of this language is entirely in the intonation which must receive each monosyllable, we have managed, with the help of certain signs of convention, to sufficiently represent each of the six tones, which compose this language”, p. I. Aubaret devised an ingenious transcription system that employed a combination of accents to accurately represent intonation. Additionally, the author provided a concise overview of the grammatical and linguistic treatment of vowels and consonants, as well as the specific word classes in Annamese, with a particular emphasis on particles and numerals. At the time this was written, Hué served as the capital of Annam, but it is unlikely that the city possessed a printing shop capable of producing the dictionary. In 1861, Aubaret traveled to Bangkok to negotiate with the King of Siam regarding Cambodia, and it was in Bangkok where he had his book printed by the local Catholic missionary press. Vietnamese is an ancient dialect that originated from Chinese and consists entirely of monosyllables with slightly varied articulation, conveying different meanings depending on the tone of pronunciation. The book was subsequently reprinted in a revised form in Paris in 1867.Louis Gabriel Galdéric Aubaret was a French naval officer, diplomat, orientalist and the first French consul in Bangkok. He was born in Montpellier in 1825 and died in Poitiers in 1894. He was sent to the French Protectorate of Annam as inspector of native affairs to the admirals governor-generals. Besides his Annamite grammar, he translated the Annamite Code in 1865, and published a work on the history of Gia-dinh (Saigon) and of lower Cochinchina.Wear to boards, doodles to pastedowns endpapers, wide margins, otherwise in very good condition.l Cordier, Indosinica IV, 2287-2288; WorldCat 456831861, 30119409, 252343473, 920409687.

[1], 9 engraved ll.Complete series of 9 engraved prints by Robert van Audenaerde after Andrea Mantegna's paintings of Caesar’s triumphs, preceded by the title-print, commissioned by Cardinal Panciatico, with his arms at the foot of the title-print. Mantegna (1430/31-1506) created these paintings between 1484 and 1492 for the Ducal Palace in Mantua, commissioned by Duke Federico I Gonzago, or more likely his son Francesco II. They show the triumphal military parade celebrating Julius Caesar's victory in the Gallic Wars: a procession of Roman soldiers, musicians, exotic animals, war equipment and captives. These paintings are often acknowledged as Mantegna’s greatest masterpiece, because they form the most complete pictorial representation of a Roman triumph. His paintings became very popular, also for engravers and printmakers, and many print series followed, including one from his own workshop. The present series by the Ghent engraver Robert van Audenaerde (1663-1743) is one of the most beautiful and gracious renderings of these paintings, with beautiful and highly detailed images. Paperboard folder a little worn, front hinge cracked, so that the front board is nearly detached, boards reinforced at some places with transparent tape. Each print with a vertical crease (hardly affecting the plates), a few with very small marginal tears, some plates with an occasional stain or slightly browned or dust-soiled, but otherwise in good condition.l Berlin Kat. 4060; Le Blanc, Manuel de l’amateur d’estampes, Audenaerde 79-88 (p. 68); not in Hollstein.

[18], 232; [12], 228 pp.Rare (first and only?) Amsterdam edition in the original French, of 60 moral and political fables, intended for the education of young princes. They were written by Gabriel Audin, Prior of Termes or Thermes (in the French Basque, near Andorra) and published at Paris in 1648. Antoine Augustin Bruzen de La Martiniere (1662-1746) appears to have prepared a new edition in 1720, intended for the education of the thirteen-year-old Louis, Prince of Asturias (1707-1724), who was to be King of Spain for a few months in 1724, but that edition seems to have remained unpublished or barely published: one or two copies may survive and the Bibliotheque Nationale has a loose title-page that can be seen on Gallica, with the Amsterdam imprint of Jean [III] Pauli, 1620, who did publish a Dutch translation in 1722. The present edition may be a 1754 reissue of the 1720 edition. It retains the dedication to the Prince, even though he died thirty years before it was issued, as well as his 1720 portrait. In the preface Bruzen de La Martiniere notes that he thoroughly revised the text and warmly recommends the fables to parents and teachers, suggesting that children can profit greatly from studying them. The plates were all newly engraved ca. 1720. Since the French texts in the two frontispieces were replaced with Dutch ones for the 1722 edition (that for the first volume is dated 1721), they were removed for the present issue. The lively illustrations are beautifully drawn and engraved. With some pencil marks probably made by a child. With a small corner torn off the dedication leaf, occasionally soiled, and with the frontispiece, title-page and portrait in volume 1 backed with plain paper. Rebacked with new endpapers and paper pasted over the calf binding. In spite of these signs of use, the condition remains reasonable.l Landwehr, Emblem & fable books F053 (2 copies); STCN (4 copies incl. 2 incompl.); cf. Fabula Docet 91 (1664 Paris ed.).

Late 19th-century black morocco.
First edition of the extraordinary coloured plates of quadrupeds by the well-known French-American naturalist and painter John James Audubon (1785-1851), who, for this publication, worked together with his sons John Woodhouse and Victor Audubon. The plates are considered the finest animal prints published in America to this day. Unlike the Birds of America, it was produced entirely in the United States, making it the "largest successful color plate book project of 19th-century America" (Reese). After the publication of his highly acclaimed Birds of America, Audubon settled on the Hudson River and began working on the present series to document the animal life of North America. The plates were first published in 30 parts of 5 plates each and three separately published accompanying text volumes, written by John Bachman, appeared between 1846-1854. A second edition was published in 1856, but "the first edition is by far the best" (Sabin).Title-pages with some small scuff marks, a few plates with minor unobtrusively repaired tears along the edges. Binding skilfully restored. Complete set, with most plates in fine condition.l Buchanan, pp. 147-154; Nissen, ZBI 162; Reese 36; Sabin 2367.

[1 blank], [322], [1 blank] ll.Beautiful copy with wide margins of the first edition of the first Italian translation of the most famous work of St. Augustine (354-430), his Latin De civitate Dei, the City of God, also known as De civitate Dei contra paganos (The City of God against the pagans). Written in the early 5th century, it deals with issues concerning God, martyrdom, Jews, and various Christian philosophies. Augustine wrote the treatise to explain Christianity's relationship with competing religions and philosophies, as well as with the Roman government with which it was increasingly intertwined. He wrote soon after the Visigoths sacked Rome in 410. This event left Romans in a deep state of shock, and many saw it as punishment for abandoning their Roman religion. It was in this atmosphere that Augustine set out to provide a consolation for Christians, writing that, even if the earthly rule of the empire was imperilled, it was the City of God that would ultimately triumph. This magnificent incunable is the "only well authenticated early edition" (BMC) of the Italian translation. With some small, mostly marginal wormholes in the first few and last few quires (some restored), occasionally affecting a letter in the text, but otherwise in very good condition, with wide margins and complete with the 2 integral blank leaves, at the beginning and end, often lacking. Rebacked with the original backstrip laid down, leather on the back board scratched. A wide-margined copy of the first Italian City of God.l BMC VII, 1136, V, pp. xvi-xvii, and VI, p. xv; GK 2892; Goff A-1248; Hain-Copinger 2071 & 2072; ISTC ia01248000; Proctor 6145.

196 ll.Rare first and only edition of a highly original selection of fragments from the works of Saint Augustine (354-430) assembled by an unknown humanist with the clear intention of defending the Catholic faith against the numerous kinds of reformers and heretics active in northern Europe in those days, and to bring back straying believers to the true faith. The compiler of this anthology, who dated his preface 23 March [1526?], has not been identified, but Albert Paffraet (d. 1553), the son of the more famous printer Richard Paffraet, published many books by contemporary humanists such as Erasmus, Murmellius, Reuchlin and Angelo Poliziano, including both pamphlets inspired by the ideas of the Reformation and defences of the traditional faith. With ower’s inscriptions and stamps. With some small wormholes in the last few leaves, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding has been repaired, with a paper board replacing the back wooden board but covered by the original calf and the manuscript pastedown, three old patches on and near the spine (with the loss of the headbands) and the joints cracked. An interesting selection of fragments from the works of Saint Augustine.l KVK & WorldCat (2 copies); NK 148 (2 copies); STCN (1 copy); USTC (4 copies, some no longer located); for the woodcut border: NAT V, 21.
