Early 18th-century richly gold-tooled red morocco, each board with a large centrepiece a petit fers made partly with pointillé stamps.
(Integral?) engraved title-page + [10], “407” [= 411], [1 blank] pp.First edition of the author's principal work, in the original Spanish, dedicated to King Philip III of Spain, whose father had untied the Portuguese and Spanish crowns in 1580. It centres on the Philippines and the Moluccas, but also discusses China, Java, Sumatra and Ceylon, and even "los estrechos Persico y Arabico" (p. 12). The Portuguese naval commander Afonso de Albuquerque had conquered Malacca by 1511, a few decades after Arabic merchants introduced Islam there. This provided a base to quickly establish Portuguese influence over the islands of the region. "Few narratives are written with so much judgment and elegance ... One of the most important works for the history of the Philippine islands ... The book also contains matter relating to Sir Francis Drake and American voyages, and to the history of Spanish and Portuguese exploration in the Indies" (Cox). "For the compilation of this work, the author had the command of all authentic manuscript relations, which were either in official custody, or in private hands, besides the testimony of such persons then living as had been eyewitnesses to any part of what he delivers" (Griffin). With the engraved armorial bookplate of Jeremiah Hill (ca. 1820). Later in the celebrated library of Sir Thomas Phillips (1792-1872), then the library of Philip Robinson. The imprint of the engraved title-page appeared below the thin-rule border at the foot and is usually shaved or (as in the present copy) wholly lost, along with part of the foot border itself but the title-page is otherwise complete and intact. A few leaves have marginal chips repaired at an early date or small worm holes in the head margin unobtrusively repaired, and one has a small hole repaired slightly affecting 4 words of text. A few leaves are slightly browned or show some spots or smudges, but the book is otherwise in good condition. The hinges are worn, with a few small cracks, and the head and foot of the spine slightly damaged, but the binding is otherwise good, with nearly all of the tooling very good. A beautifully bound copy of an essential source for any study of the Moluccas and the Philippines in the early Portuguese (from 1580 also Spanish) colonial period.l Cox I, p. 284; Griffin & Phillips, Philippine Islands 23; Medina, Hisp.-Amer. 551; Palau 16089; Sabin 1946.

[8], 6, [2], 371, [1 blank], [11] pp.Rare second edition of Argoli's principal astrological text, which concerns astrology in general and astrological medicine in particular. Andrea Argoli (1570-1657) was a versatile Italian scholar: a jurist, mathematician, astronomer and astrologer, and medical writer. From 1622 to 1627 he was a professor of mathematics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, a post he likely lost because of his enthusiasm for astrology. In 1632 he became professor of mathematics at the University of Padua.Thorndike describes Argoli’s discussion of astrological “critical days” as an example of the continued prevalence of astrology in the seventeenth century: "Having in its early chapters asserted the influence of the stars, Argolus devotes the ninth chapter of the first book to instruction how to predict from one's nativity the coming train of events of the human body … it is only with chapter 14 that we at last come to critical days of which the discussion continues to chapter 21, where the first book ends. Even then the discussion continues to be primarily astrological …"With an occasional line underscoring the text and some short lines in the fore-edge margin. Binding slightly soiled, but otherwise very good. Corners of the first few leaves slightly thumbed, a minor water stain in the last few leaves, a minor tear in the title-page. The leaves are untrimmed, leaving generous margins and causing slightly frayed edges. Overall in very good condition.l ICCU 002335; Thorndike VII, pp. 122-124; for the author: DSB I, pp. 244-245.

[172] pp.First quarto edition (with larger illustrations than the first two editions, which were in octavo format) of a collection of 70 beautiful full-page engraved illustrations from the Old and New Testaments, each accompanied by a Latin poem by Benito Arias Montanus (1527-1598), explaining the meaning and significance of the person or event represented. Arias Montanus, orientalist, Catholic exegete and editor of Plantin's famous Antwerp Polyglot Bible, led the life of an ascetic, dividing his time between prayer and study. He was also celebrated as a poet, chiefly of religious verse. The present edition has the same main text, approbation, privilege and forewords by Plantin as the first two editions, and the plate for the engraved title-page, still dated "1571", was also used for the first edition (the second used a reduced copy). The illustrations, however, are much larger than in the octavo editions. Many of them also appeared in the folio Bible of 1583 and some in earlier liturgical works, and Plantin no doubt commissioned them for those publications. But he apparently recognized that this stock of beautiful copperplate engravings perfectly suited his friend Arias Montanus's poems, leading him to use them to produce a new edition in the larger quarto format. The present copy was first owned by a member of one of the leading families of the Southern Low Countries, Robert de Ligne (1564-1614), Baron (from 1613 Prince) of Barbançon and Arenberg, and Captain of the bodyguard of the Archduke and Archduchess Albert and Isabelle. One text leaf with a cut (fortunately between the lines of type), a fold and a couple early marginal repairs, a small rust hole in another text leaf and an occasional minor marginal defect, but still in good condition. The arms on the binding are mutilated, and the binding further shows some wear and one headband is damaged, but it remains structurally sound. The most beautifully illustrated edition of Arias Montanus's poems written to elucidate bible scenes.l Morales 20; Netherlandish books 2479 & 2521?; Ruelens & De Backer, p. 108; USTC 401970 & 411594?; Voet 590.

VII, 291; IV, 145 pp.First edition of the biography of the famous abbess and reformer of Port-Royal, Mother Angélique de Sainte Magdelaine Arnauld (1591-1661) and notes on the history of Port-Royal, Maubuisson and other monasteries by her niece Angélique de Saint Jean Arnauld d'Andilly (1624-1684). Together with notes on her own life and the events at Port-Royal during the years she was abbess there. Angélique de Sainte Magdelaine Arnauld is famous for having reformed the Abbey of Port-Royal and other Cistercian abbeys such as Maubuisson in such a way that her monastery, of which she was abbess from an early age on, could become the centre of Jansenism in France. The many difficulties and even prosecutions which were the result of these reforms, are described in a very lively manner. These accounts form a very important source for the history of Port-Royal, frequently cited by the historiographer of the reform movement of Port-Royal, Sainte-Beuve. Blaise Pascal was one of her admirers. With an owner's inscription (Petri Dupré, 1770) and a library stamp of the Paters Assumptionists (Heide Huis) at Nijmegen. LVI, "473" [=471] pp.True fifth edition (or fourth edition of the revised edition) of a highly popular outline of medicine for laymen administering charitable medical assistance. Although designed so that anyone could quickly acquire the necessary medical knowledge, the author emphasized that the reader should always consult physicians: "It would be tempting God, violating the [natural] order, not to consult them, because it is ordinarily through them that diseases are cured" (pp. xiii-xiv). Unfortunately, a physician would probably prescribe the remedies listed in the book, which include "fried sow's genitals as a remedy against incontinence"; amulets or roots of certain dried plants "suspended between the shoulders and allowed to dry" against haemorrhoids; "the shirt of a menstruating woman worn as an emmenagogue; oil of earthworms for contusions; … ivy gathered during a waning moon against atrophy; and pounded cockchafers against rabies". Against pleurisy, horse dung is recommended, or otherwise "a live pigeon split in half and applied to the patient for eighteen to twenty hours 'until the bad smell makes it necessary to remove it'" (Ramsey). The latter method was apparently much in vogue by Montpellier physicians (Weston).Louis Daniel Arnault de Nobleville (1701-1778) was a French physician and naturalist who devoted most of his career to the medical caring of the poor. Among his works are a multivolume study of the natural history of animals relating to the materia medica and a treatise on the singing of nightingales. With a 1777 owner's inscription on the fly-leaf. Large, highly detailed wall map of Asia and the Arabian peninsula, giving a view from the Ural Mountains and Black Sea, across to China, Japan and the Philippines, including India and Ceylon, but stopping just above Singapore and Indonesia. Arrowsmith was "easily the foremost cartographer of his time" (Tooley) and presents here a very accurate map of the continent, which shows significant improvement over previous ones. The map is dedicated to James Rennell, surveyor general of the East India Company and the father of Indian cartography. With an owner's inscription of the army officer and colonial governor General Robert Brownrigg on the title-label mounted on the slipcase. [6], XL, 384, [16] pp.First Dutch edition of D'Arvieux's Voyage ... vers le grand Emir, translated and annotated by Gerard Kuipers. He resided in Sidon (or Saïda) in Lebanon (then under Ottoman rule) from 1653 to 1664, when he was sent on a mission to the Arabs of Mount Carmel in Palestine, which is narrated in the present work. The account includes a general description of the traditions and customs of nomadic tribes and is illustrated with 3 fine plates, showing an Arabian horseman, the Emir and the Emir's wife. It was first edited and posthumously published by Jean La Roque in 1717.Slightly browned, 2 conjugate leaves detached, binding shows some wear, otherwise in very good condition.l Tiele, Bibl. 55; cf. [2], VIII, 133, [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of a defence of the former Supreme Director of Chile Bernardo O'Higgins (1778-1842) against the accusations presented in an article in a Peruvian newspaper. In this article in the Mercurio Peruano, published in Lima in 1833, Carlos Rodríguez (1782-1839) violently attacked O'Higgins, who immediately sued for libel. The Acusacion, an elaborate defence of O'Higgins and mostly a compilation of documents relating to his career during the Chilean War of Independence, was supposedly presented before the court in Lima, which sentenced Rodríguez to two months in prison and a fine of 150 pesos. The Acusacion did much for O'Higgins reputation in Peru, but led to negative reactions in Chile, where it was considered to be an overtly positive version of the events, even leading to a different publication countering O'Higgins's version of the events.Dr. Don Juan Ascencio was probably a pseudonym of José Joaquin de Mora (1783-1806), a Spanish poet and writer who resided in Chile and Peru for several years.Withstruck-through notes on the title-page and handwritten page numbering throughout. Binding worn along the extremities; a very good copy.l René-Moreno, Biblioteca Peruana 5; Sotomayor Valdés, Historia de Chile I, pp. 344-350; not in Sabin; for Mora: Figueroa, Diccionario biograìfico de estranjeros en Chile, p. 154.

[12], 283, [1] ll.First Aldine edition, in the original Latin, of a collection of commentaries on orations by Cicero by one of the most important Roman Cicero commentators of his time, Quintus Asconius Pedanius (9/3 BCE - 76/88 CE). The present edition was edited by Franciscus Asulanus, also known as Gian Francesco Torresani d'Asola, Aldo Manutio’s brother-in-law (Francesco’s father Andrea had been Aldo’s partner and later his father-in-law, then ran the printing and publishing house from Aldo’s death in 1515 to his own death in 1529). Pedanius's commentaries on the rhetorical works of Cicero were long lost until Poggio Bracciolini found a manuscript in 1416. Although that manuscript has since been lost, the commentaries found their way to the printing press and would eventually find their way to the general public in light of the humanist tradition, famously upheld by the Aldine press. Franceso Griffo cut Aldo’s famous 1501 italic, which the press continued to use for many decades with minor revisions. The register of quires at the end of the present book conveniently shows a complete lowercase alphabet and the capitals from A-N. Since many passages are set entirely in capitals (sometimes half a page), the letters O-Z, not shown in the register, can easily be found in the text, except perhaps Y and Z. Aldo’s heirs published a second edition in 1547 and Paolo Manutio published a third in 1550.Binding slightly worn around the spine and corners, with some cracks in the hinges and a tear into the backstrip. Internally with only a few spots throughout and some slight marginal water stains in the last quires. Otherwise in very good condition.l Adams A2054; Ahmanson-Murphy 188; BM STC Italian, p. 59; EDIT16 3254; Renouard 96:8; USTC 811219.

117 (of 118), [3 blank] ll., including the last 3 blanks.Important manuscript containing a method of teaching “Dottrina Christiana” (Christian doctrine) to Italian deaf-mutes, devised in Genoa by Padre Ottavio Giovanni Battista Assarotti (Genoa 1753-1829). Assarotti was an Italian philanthropist and founder of the first school for deaf-mute people in Italy. It is not certain that Assarotti himself wrote the present manuscript, which may be the work of one of his collaborators, based on the method Assarotti invented and developed and using the illustrations he designed. The introduction discusses the difficulty of teaching abstract concepts, such as religion, to deaf-mute pupils, necessitating the use of illustrations as designed by Assarotti. Assarotti “never wrote down his educational philosophy and methods, and so fell into obscurity after his death" (Deaf history unveiled). As far as we know this manuscript is the only surviving witness of Assarotti's theories. The style of the watercolours is somewhat primitive and popular, but very rich in detail. They illustrate faith in general (“fede”; nos. 1-42); the commandments (“legge”; nos. 43-51); prayers (“preghiera” 1-10; nos. 52-61); the sacraments (“sacramenti”; nos. 62-95, 97-104); virtues (“virtu” 1-14; nos. 105-118), and include views of heaven and hell, creation, a city, priestly activities, and all kinds of Catholic symbols, etc.In very good condition.l Deaf history unveiled (1993), pp. 244-245; Dizionario biogr. degli Italiani 4, pp. 433-434; Donaver, “Il padre Assarotti”, in: La rass. naz. 23 (1901), pp. 79-87; Monaci, Storia del R.
