[1], [1 blank], IV, 368; [1], [1 blank], 403, [1 blank] pp.Very rare first edition of the second(?) Dutch translation of the famous anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's cabin by the abolitionist writer Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896), translated by C.M. Mensing. Another equally rare Dutch translation was published in Ghent (Belgium), without a year of publication, but generally thought to have been published in 1852, the same year as the original English edition published in Boston. The novel became extremely popular in the Netherlands. Kruseman printed 1100 copies of this translation, which sold out almost immediately (a first edition of a novel would normally consist of 300 copies). Slightly browned, some spots. Bindings slightly worn along the extremities, corners damaged. Overall in very good condition.l Huisman, Verhalen van vrijheid, pp. 60-61; NCC (3 copies); WorldCat (1 additional copy).

[12] ll.Ad 1: Third (or second) copy located of an attractive print series by the Dutch marine painter J. van Beecq (1638-1722), a nearly forgotten master who had left the Netherlands when the art market collapsed in the "year of disaster" 1672. He first followed Willem van de Velde, father and son, to England, but soon moved to France where he became painter to Louis XIV, a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture and a protégé of important patrons. In 1685, the art-loving naval official Esprit Cabart de Villermont wrote a letter to the Minister of the Navy Jean-Baptiste Colbert, marquis de Seignelay, recommending Van Beecq to his attention: "He is the only one here [in France] who excels in this genre". We have located only one other copy, in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Schwartz also notes a copy in the Bibliothèque National, but the title is not in their online catalogue.Ad 2: Only copy located of a naval print series by the French engraver Nicolas de Poilly (1626-1696). He learned the art of engraving under his better known brother François de Poilly and mostly produced portraits and religious and historical engravings. The first plates show large war and merchant ships and the last shows several battered ships in the aftermath of a storm.A stain at the top right corner throughout, only affecting a small corner of the plates, and a vertical fold though the centre of the second series, otherwise in very good condition. Binding restored.l Ad 1: Hollstein I, p. 192 (no location); G. Vernieuwde Kaart van Noordholland en Westfriesland, benevens het voornaamste gedeelte van Rhynland, en daar aan grenzende Landen.Amsterdam, Yntema & Tieboel, 1778. (92 x 68 cm). Large hand-coloured engraved map on 2 sheets, decorated with arms, figures and products from the regions shown, and with the title at the foot. Framed.
A large engraved map of what is now North Holland, showing its situation largely as it was in 1575, but with some revisions made in 1608. It is the most detailed map to show this region before the major drainage projects that began early in the seventeenth century. At a scale of about 1:82,000, it covers all but the northernmost tip of North Holland, from De Zijp in the North to Leiden and Utrecht in the south, including Haarlem, Amsterdam and Edam. It shows not only canals, inland seas, cities and towns (most represented by their churches, though other buildings or fortifications are sometimes depicted), dozens of boats and ships in the water, dunes and other topographic features, but also roads and paths, not included in Van Deventer’s 1542 map or the other major early maps. A compass appears in the sea (magnetic north above, with true north slightly to the left), and a small cartouche at the foot has a pair of compasses whose span indicates one mile. The northern part of the present day North Holland was formerly called West Friesland, and the top part of the large cartouche at right contains the coat of arms of the province of Friesland, surrounded by those of the West Friesian cities Alkmaar, Enkhuizen, Purmerend, Medemblik, Monnikendam and Hoorn. Below it is a dedication to the States of North Holland and West Friesland by Harman Allertsz. van Warmenhuysen (from 1608) and Johannes Le Francq van Berkhey (dated 1778). Below that is a key to 9 numbered regions in West Friesland and 149 numbered estates, as well as symbols for a few other features. Below that is the 1575 imprint of the original publisher. The whole cartouche is decorated with a ship’s pilot and his equipment, a woman in local dress, a ship, and products of the regions depicted.Joost Jansz. Beeldsnijder or Bilhamer (pre-1541-1590) in Amsterdam began his map in 1571 for the Duke of Alva’s Alkmaar campagne of 1573 in the Eighty Years’ War, but he published it only in 1575. His original woodcut edition is not known to survive, but Harman Allertsz. van Warmenhuysen produced a revised edition in copperplate in 1608, and his edition was copied by the engraver Jan van Jagen (the large cartouche by C. Bogerts) in 1778. It is printed from two copperplates on two large sheets of paper. It was an initiative of the medical doctor and natural historian, Johannes Le Francq van Berkhey (1729-1812), and the publishers advertised for subscriptions on 11 March 1777 and 19 December 1778, the latter announcing publication for 29 December and also noting that the copper plates would be destroyed after printing, an early example of the deliberate limitation of an edition as a selling point. Probably because it was never reprinted, it is very rare on the market.A large and detailed eighteenth-century edition of a lost sixteenth-century map. In very good condition, with only a few small marginal tears, one slightly affecting the border.l Blonk-van der Wijst, Hollandia Comitatus, pp. 35-36 (note); Boomgaard, Holland, pp. 40-41 (ill.); Donkersloot-de Vrij 677 note (6 copies); V.d. Der aufs Neu-verschantzte Turenne oder gründlich alt- und neue Kriegs-Bau-Kunst.Frankfurt and Leipzig, widow of Reinhard Wächtler, printed by Christoph Balthasar Lampe, 1690. Oblong 8vo (11 x 17 cm). With engraved frontispiece and 32 engraved plates. Contemporary calf.
[3], [1 blank], [20], 616 pp.Rare second edition, complete with all the preliminaries and engravings, of a detailed practical handbook of fortification design. This second edition, revised and improved by the author, emphasizes the new advances in fortification introduced in the Netherlands. The first edition, published in 1677, was itself a reworking of Christoph Nottnagel's popular Manuale fortificatorium from 1659. Like its predecessors, Der aufs Neu-verschantzte Turenne was published in "pocket" size, although "coat pockets were large at that time" (Jähns). In his introduction, Behr gives his reasons for naming his treatise after the French marshal Turenne and not after some German prince or general. The title should be understood to be anti-French, and implies that although the French were renowned for their military science, there was so much engineering talent to be found in the German states that Turenne would lock himself in a fortress in fear (*2v).Binding damaged at the extremities with the hinges cracked, back cover with restored fold and ca. 3 cm of the backstrip missing. Text browned and with some spots and wormholes at the lower outer corner of pp. 385-422; a fair copy.l Jähns, pp. 1373-1374; Sloos, Warfare 08062; VD17, 23:313315R (4 copies, 3 lacking the plates); WorldCat (14 copies, many incomplete).

[18], 138, [2]; [8], 262, [2]; [8], 188, [4]; [6], 277, [3]; [8], 102, [18] pp.The second editions of two works written by the famous Balthasar Bekker (1634-1698), best known for his “indecent” work De betoverde weereld. Bekker was a Dutch reformed pastor and theologian, born in Friesland in 1634, who studied at Franeker and who preached in Amsterdam from 1679 to his death in 1698. Although De betoverde weereld brought Bekker fame, it also sparked a major scandal, causing him many difficulties. Many people voiced their disapproval in numerous pamphlets and in 1692 Bekker was removed from his office in Amsterdam by the synod of Alkmaar, because of heterodoxy. In De betoverde weereld Bekker attempted to prove that the devil is unable to exercise any influence upon the destiny of mankind. By using Cartesian thought, Bekker concludes that the common notion of the devil having power in the natural world should be seen as a remnant of pagan religion and as superstition. This hypothesis relegated all stories of sorcery, witchcraft, ghosts and phantoms to the realm of fancy. Our copy also includes a part of 32 pages called the Naakte uitbeeldinge, also issued separately, bound at the beginning of the third book. The Naakte uitbeeldinge contains a survey of the whole work.De betoverde weereld is here bound with the enlarged 1692 edition of Bekker’s treatise on comets and their meaning, a work of him that caused less polemical problems. It was first published in 1683 by Hero Nauta in Leeuwarden, but was reprinted in 1692. The work was reprinted by two different printers: one by Nauta in Leeuwarden, but also - as our copy - by the Amsterdam printer Jan ten Hoorn. In this treatise, Bekker takes a clear position against the apocalyptical meaning of comets. Although this work wasn’t as controversial as Bekker’s De betoverde weereld, it shows the sceptical character of the Amsterdam preacher who never took the “truth” as it was told him for granted. Both works therefore form part of 17th-century Dutch religious and scientific history, mirroring the views and opinions of people on these subjects. With the certifying signatures of Bekker at the end of the preface of every part of his Betoverde weereld and an owner's inscription on the last endleaf dated 9 May 1712. Without the frontispiece portrait of Bekker included in some copies. [2], 76, 8 pp.Very rare and remarkable catalogue of artworks exhibited in Amsterdam to raise funds for the Dutch army. It lists 1985 artworks, not only paintings but all kinds of crafts: miniatures, drawings, engravings, lithographs, glass painting etc. All works were to be sold in a lottery to raise funds for the 10-day Campaign (Tiendaagse veldtocht) on 2-12 August 1831 by King Willem I in order to suppress the Belgian uprising. The catalogue includes a lithographed allegorical frontispiece depicting the nation in the form of a bust of King Willem I supported by art. This was designed by court artist Nicolaas Pieneman (1809-1860) and is accompanied by a poem by Jan de Breet. The present copy is the second, expanded and final edition, published shortly after the first. It lists all the artworks, including the later additions. The first edition lists only 1706 items, while the present second edition lists 1985. The frontispiece was slightly revised for the 2nd edition. The catalogue is very rare, the Dutch union catalogue (NCC) lists only 1 copy (Rijksmuseum, 2nd ed). WorldCat also records a copy in the Frick collection. The RKD has a copy of each edition.Minor rubbing on the extremities, otherwise in very good condition.l NCC (1 copy); RKD 283621; WorldCat (2 copies).

De arte bene moriendi, libri duo.Venice, Giovanni Tibernino, 1746. Agenda 12mo (16 x 8 cm). Contemporary sheepskin parchment.
216 pp.A charming little agenda 12mo edition, in the original Latin, of Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino's most famous and most popular work, known in English as The art of dying well. Roberto Bellarmino (1542-1621) or Robert Bellarmine, a learned and pious Italian Jesuit had a great reputation with Catholics and Protestants alike. He joined the Jesuits in 1560 and completed his studies at Louvain beginning in 1569, then served as professor of theology there until he returned to Italy in 1576. He became professor of theology at the new Roman College and was appointed Cardinal in 1598/99. Though a member of the committee that condemned Galileo's theses, when Galileo was much troubled by the fact that people thought he was under some severe penance, Bellarmino wrote him a certificate stating that Galileo was under no penance whatsoever, but only had signed a declaration that his theses were in contradiction with the words of the scripture. One of his famous sayings was "an ounce of peace is better than a pound of victory".With a small corner of 1 leaf restored, not approaching the text, and an occasional tiny foxed spot, but still in fine condition. The spine label is slightly damaged, but the binding is otherwise very good.l ICCU, TO0E 148488 & NAPE 01308.

97, [1] pp.Trilingual (Italian, Arabic and Ethiopic) edition of Robert Bellarmino's catechism (an abridgment of his 1598 "Dichiarazione piu copiosa della dottrina Christiana"), translated by the Maronites (Eastern Catholics) Vittorio Scialac (d. 1635) and Gabriel Sionita (1577-1648). This Arabic text, first published in 1613 as the first book set in Arabic type by the Roman Typographia Savariana (Savary de Brèves), is deservedly famous as a milestone in Catholic efforts to convert Islamic and other Arabic-speaking people in the Middle East and Africa. The present edition is the first to include an Ethiopic version, making this the only Ethiopian version published (printed with the Arabic and Italian text in three columns). The note to the reader at the end is in Italian and Ethiopic and as De Backer & Sommervogel notes, pages 94-96 provide a syllabary in Ethiopic and Hebrew.Insignificant paper defect in the title page repaired; binding slightly warped. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).l De Backer & Sommervogel I, 1195; Sacy 1274; not in Philologia Orientalis.

[12], 212, [1] ll.Third edition of Belon's Observations, the fruit of his extensive travels in Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria from 1546 to 1549. Piere Belon (ca. 1518-1564), famous for his works on ornithology, was attached as naturalist to the French embassy to the Ottoman Empire, aimed at convincing Suleiman the Magnificent to join forces against Charles V. Unlike many contemporary travel writers, Belon does not elaborate on extraordinary travel adventures, but rather limits himself to detailed observations on mammals, fish, snakes, birds, plants and the manners and customs of the peoples he encountered, only commenting on what he had witnessed himself. With printed description from a sale catalogue on pastedown, slightly browned, some light waterstains, folding plate mounted.
