[32], 160, [84] pp.Gorgeous edition of the 94 Aesop fables with 5 additional fables found by the German philologist and classical scholar Marquart Gudius, together with his extensive and scholarly notes, printed in two columns below each fable, the whole prepared by David van Hoogstraten (1658-1724), the conrector of the Latin School of Amsterdam (1694-1722). Apart from being a prolific Dutch and Neo-Latin poet, he was an esteemed linguist and philologist who edited a number of classical authors. His present splendid Phaedrus edition, intended for and dedicated to the young Stadholder of Friesland and Groningen, the “crown-prince” Johan Willem Friso of the Nassau family, is magnificently printed in the style of the French “in usum Delphini” editions made for Le Grande Dauphin. With the bookplate of John Blackburne on the front paste-down. They have been attributed to Johann Krieger, a German working in Italy, where he was known as Giovanni Chrieger. 384, [12] pp.One of the many editions of this extended collection of 400 fables, collected and translated in Italian by Giulio Landi (1498-1580), an Italian author, philosopher and classical scholar, well-known for his description of the Island Madeira. As mentioned on the title the Vita of Aesop comes first, composed in Italian on the basis of Max. Planudes’ Life, by Giulio Landi. The corpus of the Fables, includes no less than 400 animal fables, some collected from other sources (including Fables by Landi himself). The Fables are illustrated with 90 anonymous woodcuts. Several woodcuts are repeated, especially at the end, for the fables taken from other sources. All fables close with a moral, here called ‘Sentenza’, intended for the instruction and amusement of the youth.The first edition of the Vita appeared in 1545, that of the Fables in 1569, based on the ‘Aesopus Dorpii’, followed by many editions till far into the 19th century.In good condition.l Cf. The work describes 30 different species, which are illustrated by 12 beautiful and highly detailed full-page aquatint plates. The specimen were found in Sierra Leone and Guinea. Fungi from this region were only more widely studied in the second half of the 20th century, so the present work was quite early. It is also scarce, as we have only been able to trace one other copy in sales records.Adam Afzelius (1750-1837) was a Swedish botanist. He was a so called 'Apostle of Linnaeus', a member of a group of students who carried out botanical and zoological research throughout the world under the guidance of Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). Afzelius started working for the British Sierra Leone company in 1789 and made two expeditions to Western Africa with them, the first in 1793-1793 and the second 1794-1796. He is one of the very first European botanists known to study fungi in Western Africa. Although his notes, drawings and specimens survived the journey, his findings were only published posthumously. First in 1837, as part of a dissertation by physician Carl Mauritz Nyman (1813-1886). Azfelius' work was then published on its own in 1860, which is the present edition.The text leaves are 3 cm shorter than the plates and are somewhat browned, leaf [3] has been restored in the inner margin, without loss of text, the first plate is stained in the upper and lower margin, without affecting the image. The book is beautifully printed in a fine rotunda in various sizes, with the extensive commentary arranged all around the text, with auxiliary texts in two seizes of roman. The simple but expressive woodcuts by Urs Graf charmingly illustrate the sequence of events that led to the crucifixion of Jesus as told by the four evangelists. Urs Graf was the most important artist of the early renaissance from German speaking Switzerland. He was a die-cutter, woodblock book illustrator, stain glass designer, painter and engraver, and pioneered the white-line woodblock technique.With contemporary owner's inscription of Johannes Casper Mentishausen on title-page and brown morocco bookplate of Silvain S. Brunschwig. Fore-edge margin trimmed, occasionally shaving a letter or two form a shoulder note, and minor marginal damage to four leaves slightly affecting the text. A complete set of the scarce original edition, published as volumes 7-9 and 16-22 of the giant general catalogue of the Berlin manuscript collections ("Die Handschriften-Verzeichnisse der Königlichen Bibliothek zu Berlin"). Ahlwardt (1828-1909) was engaged in 1863 as cataloguer of the Arabian manuscripts. Until 1887 he classified, collated, described and excerpted some 12,000 works in ca 6000 volumes, including current accessions. The important collection was based on the precious library bequeathed by Heinrich Friedrich von Diez. It was gradually enlarged by the manuscript treasures purchased from leading German scholars such as Glaser, Landberg, Minutoli and Brugsch, Petermann, Sachau, Sprenger and Wetzstein. Ahlwardt's monumental catalogue is renowned for an unprecedented wealth of details both in physical and textual respect. It formed a pattern for a complete history of Arabic literature - theological, juridical, philosophical, scientific, linguistic, historical and poetical. Ahlwardt expanded on the customary manuscript catalogue entries by providing an exact outline of contents for each work catalogued. "When all ten volumes had been printed in 1899, Ahlwardt had created a work which by virtue of its scope and precision would remain of lasting value of the history of Arabic literature" (cf. Fück, Die Arabischen Studien in Europa, 1955, p. 192). Bindings a little bumped, dust-soiled and faded in places, some edges foxed. A clean and very good set.

CXXIV, 530, [50] pp.Second edition of a Latin translation of a work on the geography of Africa, written by the Islamic geographer and botanist Muhammad al-Idrisi (1100-1165). It deals specifically with the geography of northern Africa, Egypt and the Sahara desert, covering its soil, cities, population, mountains, deserts, rivers and monuments. Al-Idrisi also mentions various travel routes from one city to the other. Around 1138, al-Idrisi was invited to the court of the king of Sicily, Roger II, who asked him to map the world as it was then known. This map is now lost, but Roger II also asked for supplemental texts to comment on the map. "Emissaries were sent far and wide, and from the information they brought back the Kitab al-Rojari [Book of Roger] was compiled, and completed by January 1154" (Howgego). Various manuscripts containing (parts of the) Kitab al-Rojari have survived, and the present translation was based on one of them. The present work was translated and edited by the Johannes Melchior Hartmann (1764-1817), who worked from a medieval Arabic manuscript at the University of Jena.With a library stamp. The text in the present publication was based on various Arabic manuscripts collected by Broch himself, and is here printed together with Broch's commentary on the text, which gained him international fame. [6], 119, [1 blank] pp.First edition of this annotated translation of volume 8 of Al-Hamdani's al-Iklil by Nabih Amin Faris (1906-1968), who was a historian and professor of Arab history at the American University of Beirut. The al-Iklil (in full: Kitab al-Iklil min akhbar al-Yaman wa-ansab ?imyar or in English: Crowns from the Accounts of al-Yemen and the genealogies of ?imyar) is a ten-volume historical and geographical work by the Arab geographer, traveller, poet, astronomer, chemist, grammarian, and historian Abu Muhammad al-?asan ibn A?mad ibn Yaqub al-Hamdani (ca. 893-945). Al-Hamdani was born in Sana'a, he travelled throughout the Arabian Peninsula before returning to Sana'a. There he was imprisoned because of his political and religious views, after his release he left the city in order to write and compile his works in relative peace. He was one of the most prolific South Arabian scholars with several extensive works to his name, however, of his al-Iklil only 4 of the 10 volumes have survived. The present work concerns volume 8, in which Al-Hamdani mainly describes public buildings and castles: the pre-Islamic antiquities of Yemen. His works, including one on the geography of the Arabian Peninsula, are some of the earliest and most complete Arabic sources on Arabia. They were the subject of extensive German and Austrian scholarship during the 19th century, before this English edition appeared as volume 3 of the Princeton Oriental Texts.Binding shows very slight signs of wear, slight browning throughout but mostly to the first and last few pages, edges very slightly foxed, several inscriptions and a stamp, including two ownership inscriptions belonging to professor Rudi Paret, on the first flyleaf. Prepared by Ahmed ibn Muhammad al-Garadi, the secretary, Arabic teacher and companion of the German explorer Hermann Burchardt (1857-1909), the book describes Burchardt’s travels in the south of the Arabian Peninsula, where he was ambushed and killed by gunmen in December 1909. Containing “important ethnographical information on crafts and the Jewish population”, the account also boasts a wealth of photographs “of great documentary value” (Speake), including city views and landmarks of Sanaa, Taizz, and Mocha, such as tower houses in Sanaa’s old town, the Ashrafiya Mosque, the Grand Mosque in Mocha, and the ruined palace of Sultan Hasan, as well as pictures of local children, a group of Jews studying scripture in the synagogue, several men sitting around a water pipe, bedouins, farmers, and workers. The images impressively portray the destitution of the Yemenite population in the early 20th century.In addition, the work includes annotations to the text of the travelogue, a list of examples of the Sanaa idiom, and an index prepared by the German orientalist Eugen Mittwoch, who also translated the Arabic text. Dala'il al-khayrat. [= "Waymarks of benefits"].[Eastern Turkestan, now Xinjiang, China, early 17th century CE]. 4to (19 x 14 cm). Manuscript written in black ink on paper in Arabic script, with a red single- or double-line frame around each page, rubricated throughout, and two illustrations on pages 47 and 48) showing the "Ka'ba of Allah" (!) and the burial sites of the first three Rashidun Caliphs. The Arabic script is in the sini calligraphic style used in China, an archaic form mixing features of naskh and muhaqqaq. Contemporary(?) black, red and gold painted and lacquered leather over paper and cloth. The painted sides show floral designs in black and gold on a red background, in a black border with red wave designs. With remnants of leather on the brown cloth spine.

[1], 337 pp.An extremely rare early 17th-century Turkestani example of the famous Sunni prayerbook “Dala’il al-khayrat”: an Arabic manuscript written in what is today Xinjiang, China.The Dala’il al-khayrat (“Waymarks of benefits” or “Proofs of good deeds”), an extensive book of poems in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, was compiled by the Moroccan Sufi scholar Muhammad ibn Sulaiman al-Jazuli (807-870 AH / 1405-1465 CE) and was quickly received throughout the Islamic world, functioning as a kind of Muslim catechism. The present manuscript, written in so distant an Islamic community as that of Eastern Turkestan, a territory dominated throughout by Mongols or Chinese, where Muslims were commonly viewed as strangers, gives striking evidence of the range and scope of a tradition lasting for almost six centuries: the utopia of Islam as the religion of oneness, aiming to unite all the Muslim peoples in a single community reaching from Europe to the Far East.Occasional notes and/or corrections in the margins. With 4 leaves (pp. 12-19) that were not originally part of the manuscript, consisting of Arabic text (which is also rubricated) written on lilac-lined (printed) white paper with Chinese characters in the head margins of the pages. The numbering in Western Arabic numerals is most likely not contemporary, since the inserted pages are included in the consecutive page-numbering. With some annotations, some in Chinese characters on the front paste-down. The spine is worn, without affecting the integrity of the binding, the boards are somewhat worn but the painted designs remain clearly visible, edges somewhat frayed, the leaves are somewhat browned and stained, mainly finger staining in the bottom outer corners, showing the manuscript's popularity in extensive use. Otherwise the text is still very clearly legible and the whole is altogether well preserved.
