[12], 260, [1] ll.Third (and last incunable) edition of a classic work by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), in the original Latin, on the epistles of St. Paul, providing a profound explanation of the teachings of one of the most eminent theologians of the Catholic Church. The first edition, edited by Pietro Malduro or Petrus of Bergamo (ca. 1400-1482), appeared at Bologna in 1481 and apparently served as the model for the second at Basel in 1495. The Basel edition is by far the most common, and probably served as the model for the present edition (the prologue appears to be the same, though the “Petrus Bergomensis”, explicitly credited in the Basel edition, is not named in the present edition. Drawing from the texts of the New Testament, Aquinas addresses various issues that pertain to the moral conduct of a devout Christian, making this work a valuable resource. Aquinas wrote his commentary on Saint Paul's Epistles near the end of his life. He is believed to have written the explanations for the Epistle to the Romans and the beginning of the first Epistle to the Corinthians himself, while most of the other sections were reportationes (transcriptions by someone from the audience of an oral presentation) of Thomas's work, written by Reginald (Raynald) of Piperno (ca. 1230-ca. 1290). Essentially, Reginald “reported” on practically all of Saint Paul, up to and including the Epistle to the Hebrews. It is also believed, however, that Aquinas revised all of the reportationes except for the Epistle to the Romans. Reginald documented several of Aquinas’s other works, and he was Acquinas’s confidant in all of his various activities. He also heard Aquinas’s last confession and kept all manuscripts in the authors own handwriting ("habuit omnia scripta sua"). After Aquinas’s death, Reginald filled his post as lecturer in the priory at Naples. The book opens with an alphabetical index that occupies all but the title-page in the preliminaries (a-b) with instructions for its use. The main text begins on the first leaf following the preliminaries, also signed “a” (where the leaf numbering also begins). The main text begins with a prologue, followed by Aquinas’s commentaries on the Epistle to the Romans, the first and second Epistles to the Corinthians and further to the Galatians, the Ephesians, the Philippians, the Colossians, the first and second Epistle to the Thessalonians, the first and second Epistle to Timothy, and the Epistles to Titus, Philemon and the Hebrews. This is followed by the colophon at the foot of GG5r (below “Finis”), which notes that the book was printed in Venice with the types of Bonetus Locatelli from Bergamo under the guidance of and at the expense of Octavianus Scotus (“caracteribus Boneti Locatelli impressa: ductu vero & impensis ... Octaviana Scoti”), on 22 December 1498. The verso of that leaf (the last printed page of the book) lists the book’s contents, quire by quire and shows Scotus’s (4th) publisher's device (again following “Finis”).The final blank leaf has been cut out and what appears to be a contemporary blank leaf reattached, but it is not the original blank (which would have had a watermark and more widely spaced chainlines). The first preliminary quire has some restorations, with the title-page attached to the reinforcing and a small dark stain in its gutter margin, slightly affecting the text on the verso. One, two or three small wormholes appear in many leaves, mostly in the margins, but two appear within the text block in the last 20 leaves, with no significant loss. The second half of the book has a faint water stain in the upper outside corner, mostly in the margins but crossing the corner of the text block. The book has been rebacked, as noted, and only a small part of the original backstrip survives (with a cut across it). Internally still in very good condition; in spite of the small defects in the covering, the binding remains in good condition except for the spine and the missing parts of the fastenings.l Bod-Inc T127; Goff T235; GW M46154; HC 1341; IDL 4357; ISTC it00235000; IBP 5259; Pellechet 943; Polain 3696; USTC 990458; not in BMC.

The bilingual (English and Arabic) report was, in the form of the present copy, issued yearly during the 1950's. The main subjects in the present report concern Iranian oil, exploration, capital investments, research, work performance, and the training of more Saudi Nationals for oil work.Aramco was founded as a petroleum partnership between US firms and Saudi Arabia in 1933.its headquarters were initially based in the United States, but were moved to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in 1952. This coincided with King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud's successful negotiations - supported by threats of nationalizing the Saudi oil facilities - in 1950 on behalf of the Saudi Arab Government regarding a larger share of the profits. Both the largest onshore and largest offshore oil fields in the world, respectively called Ghawar and Safaniya, are located in Saudi Arabia and are since their discoveries in the early 1950's in the hands of Aramco. The wrappers are very slightly rubbed, with a small stain at the head of the wrapper with the Arabian title, otherwise internally fine, bright and clean. The so-called "manuscript edition" of Richard Burton's celebrated translation of Alf Laylah Wa Laylah, commonly known in English as the Arabian nights. These Arabic tales, cherished in Europe since the early 18th century, are often erotic in content, and in Burton's unexpurgated translation they outraged Victorian England. Burton included numerous footnotes and a scholarly apparatus, offering a vivid picture of Arabian life (including sexual customs), which set his translation apart from earlier English renderings. The present edition (limited to 99 sets, the present being copy no. 49) includes a manuscript leaf from a text by Burton. In the present copy this is a book review by Burton, of a French translation of Johannis de Capua's Latin translation of a Hebrew translation of the Panchatantra, a Sanskrit frame story written several centuries before the Arabian nights. The notes at the head show that it was used as printer’s copy. The title-page of volume one uses the correct main title, The book of the thousand nights and a night, but confusingly mixes it with part of the subtitle of the Supplemental nights: "to the book of the thousand one nights with notes anthropological and explanatory". To add further confusion it says "volume three", though the content is that of volume one. The volume number is clearly a printer's error, apparently corrected early in the press run. Some minor browning to the endpapers, those of the first volume partly detached and with a small pieces torn off, the binding has some very minor wear to the hinges, and a few headbands have been carefully repaired. A fine set.l Scheherazade's web: the 1001 nights & comparative literature, J. Ross’s bibliography 10 & 11; cf. Penzer, pp. 126-132 (other Burton club editions).

Hand-cut woodblock bearing the text "Safr Nishd al-nishad li-Süleyman ..." (Book of the Song of songs of Solomon) in naskh Arabic script.[Probably Ottoman provinces, mid-18th century (ca. 1750)]. A single hand-cut woodblock (17 x 9 x 2.2 cm, with protrusions to the left and right making it wider - 11 cm - near the head to accommodate the wider 2nd line) intended for use as printing block, with 6 lines of text, together with an inked impression on 18th century paper (16.5 x 10.5 cm).
Woodblock with the Arabic title “Book of the Song of songs of Solomon” followed by a reference to the Hebrew title “Shir hashirim” (Song of songs) transcribed in Arabic, probably produced in the Ottoman regions of the Levant for a rural printing office. A rare survival of an 18th-century printer’s woodblock from the Islamic world, and also an important witness to cross-cultural printing for minority audiences in the Ottoman world. We include an inked impression of the block on 18th-century paper paper, clearly not printed recently, because it does not show the worm holes that now appear in the block. The text reads: "Safr Nishd al-nishad li-Süleyman wa’ighal ba-l’Abraniyat Shir hashirim".The inked impression of the woodblock is pasted to a piece cut out of a Croatian printed prayer book compiled by a Croatian Catholic in Bosnia, Rafo Barišic, Pasha duhovna (Spiritual pasture), on spirituality and Passover, first published at Rome in 1842.Some small wormholes in the wood, post-dating the print; the upper surface (printing side) of the block stained black from ink used for printing. Printer’s woodcuts such as this are often discarded or recycled and rarely survive in such good condition as the present example.l No relevant Arabic edition of the Song of songs in: Catalogue of Arabic printed books in the British Museum (cf. vol. 1, cols. 381-382: editions of 1869 and later); Google Books; KVK; Qatar Digital Library; WorldCat; for the Croatian prayer book: Knezovic Pavao, “Autorstvo ‘Paše duhovne’ ”, in: Nova prisutnost, 16 (2018), pp. 477-486 (with an English summary).

374 ll.Lengthy and well preserved 13th century Arabic manuscript law book on the fatwa, produced in the Levant by an anonymous author. A fatwa is legal advice given by a Muslim authority on request, with the purpose of resolving a religious or legal problem that has arisen among members of Islam. The person who gives the legal information is familiar with Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and is referred to as a mufti; the one who asks for legal advice is called Mustafti. According to the famed 13th-century Islamic jurist Ibn al-Qaayyim al-Jawziya mufti were “God’s agents". The present anonymous work seems to treat the jurisprudence of the fatwa itself, rather than declaring fatwa on something. The title means "The book of (kitab) analisys or understanding (al-waaqi) of the fatwa (fi'l-Fatawi)". As described in the book itself this is the first volume of an unknown total.Fatwas were produced by jurists from the 10th century onward and in the 13th century, when the present copy was made, several important Islamic lawbooks were compiled in India at the Sultanate of Delhi.Provenance: 1963 Elghanyan to Hagop Kevorkian (1872-1962); sold at Sotheby's, 18 April 1983 (Kevorkian collection), lot 25; private collector.Binding a bit short. Shelf marks on the front pastedown. Later annotations on the 19th century front endpapers. First leaf repaired. A few minor holes throughout, paper browned, 2 quires in the middle detached. Otherwise in remarkably good condition for its age.l Schoenberg Database: 29775.

[4], 400; [4], 423 [1 blank]; [4], 399, [1 blank]; [4], 451, [1 blank] pp.Rare, beautifully illustrated edition of Arago's account of the voyage of l'Uranie, under command of Louis Freycinet (1817-1820). The voyage was organized by the French government, under the restored Royalty, to show the flag around the world and to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism and meteorology. Arago was attached to the expedition as official artist, and first published a narrative of the voyage as Promenade autour du monde. The Souvenirs is a more elaborate work, augmented with many new illustrations. The present "richly illustrated edition of the Souvenirs is much prized" (Hill), and the third volume is almost entirely devoted to Hawaii.Occasionally slightly foxed, large stain on last leaves of the second volume, otherwise in very good condition.l Forbes 1134; Hill 30; cf. 32 pp.The Arabic Superman issue of the Aramco World Magazine, with a lovely illustration of Superman on the front and Batman and Robin on the back. An included article explains the history of these Arabic counterparts of these American superheroes. In 1964 the Arabic Superman was introduced into the Middle East operating under the guise of Nabil Fawzi instead of Clark Kent, followed a year later by Sobhi (Batman) and Zakkour (Robin). The comics of course read from right to left, as does the "S" on the costume of Superman. The article seems to be an important source on these Arabic comics. Other articles cover David Roberts, Cotton Castle, the history of Aramco and the journey of father Abd al-Masih. A fine copy.
