Folio (32.5 x 21 cm) & 4to (19.5 x 20.5 cm). In dark brown ink on paper.
[2], [2 blank]; [2], [2 blank] pp.Two letters by Jacques René Pleuc (or possibly Pleve), officer of the infamous French 18-gun privateer Le Grand Décidé which had been operating out of Bordeaux since 1799 under its captain Duchesne Lasalle for its owner Pierre Leleu. With the capture of the English frigate Liverpool off the coast of Brittany near Brest in 1799, Jacques René was made Capitaine de Prise giving him responsibility for the captured ship. In the first letter, he writes to Auguste-Anne Bergevin (1753-1831) the relevant authority at Bordeaux, complaining that Leleu has still not paid the promised share of the proceeds from the sale of the booty, which was carried out by the brothers Amédée and (Joseph?) Eugène Larrieu in Bordeaux. The second letter is addressed to the Larrieu brothers, still trying to secure payment, referring to the earlier letter and naming the ship and the amount of money (5000 francs), not noted in the first letter. The first letter somewhat tattered at the head with the loss of parts of 3 or 4 words and both were formerly folded for sending. Both are in good condition. A fascinating primary source providing a window into the logistics and finance of a privateering venture.

20 letters [4] pp. each (some including blanks); 1 letter [1, 1 blank] pp.; list of publications [4] pp.Signed autograph letters written over nearly 40 years by the German-born orientalist in Saint Petersburg, Bernard Dorn (1805-1881) to (or in one case for) his Paris-born colleague Marie-Félicité Brosset (1802-1880), mostly while Brosset was at the Hermitage Museum and Dorn at the Asiatic Museum, both in Saint Petersburg. The letters revolve around their mutual professional interest in oriental languages, particularly in Georgia (Tiflis is explicitly mentioned), and in numismatics. Dorn and Brosset were nearly the same age, came to Saint Petersburg at nearly the same time, and the present letters show that they also developed a close personal friendship, sometimes referring to their families. Some letters with embossed stamps. Some of the letters were sealed and therefore have small tears where Brosset broke the seals, but all are in good or very good condition. In 3 letters the ink has bled through a bit.

Beschryvinge [v]an 't getakelde schip met sijn loopende touwerck. A description of the tackeling belonging to a shipp.Amsterdam, Jacobus Robijn, [c. 1690]. 470 x 380 mm. Large copperplate engraving of ship.
A rare broadside in both Dutch and English portrays a three-masted square-rigged ship from the late seventeenth century. This magnificent work was printed by Jacobus Robijn and the engraving by Jan van den Aveelen vividly captures a bustling maritime scene, prominently featuring a main navu vessel, used to illustrate the intricate rigging contemporaries could expect to find on a Dutch warship. Accompanying the image is a secondary sheet of text that serves as a comprehensive guide to the ship's structure and rigging. Each element of the ship is meticulously numbered and labeled, providing a precise understanding of its composition. The descriptive text is divided into four columns for each language, corresponding to different parts of the ship, enhancing the viewer's understanding of its complexity. This thoroughness showcases the technical knowledge and naval expertise of the Dutch during that period, emphasizing the meticulous attention to detail required in shipbuilding and navigation during the age of sail. The print is attributed to Jan van den Aveelen (1650-1727), a Dutch artist whose signature appears on another version of the same broadsheet. Van den Aveelen was renowned for his meticulous engravings and collaborated with Willem Swidde on engravings for the Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, which depicted public buildings and cityscapes in Stockholm and other Swedish cities. This collection of engravings, compiled by Erik Dahlbergh, provided a grand vision of Sweden during its era as a major power. Dahlbergh drew inspiration from topographical publications issued by the Swiss publisher Matthäus Merian.Jacobus Robijn, a prominent figure in Amsterdam, was known for supplying accurate maps and charts to navigators and explorers. His contributions facilitated maritime ventures that expanded trade routes and promoted international exchange. Two sheets joined as one. Some small repairs to tears, few small holes, marginally affecting the illustration. Otherwise in good condition.

With 2 folding maps. Modern gold-tooled red half morocco, marbled boards, preserving the printed wrappers.
[4], 271, [1] pp.First separate edition of an interesting account of the history of Brazil by Marie Armand Pascal d'Avezac de Castera-Macaya (1800-1875). It is an extract from the Bulletin de la Société de Géographie (the Août-Octobre 1857 issue) with a separately printed new title-page. It includes two folding maps, one of (the greater part of) South America, especially Brazil and one showing the estuary of the Amazon river. This copy was presented by the author to "La Société Orientale": his autograph dedication in ink is on the front wrapper and a library stamp of the Société Orientale on the title-page.In this work D'Avezac disputes several of Varnhagen's views concerning the period of the discoveries. He does not agree that Vespucci's second voyage was made in the company of Hojeda. Varnhagen defended his position in his Examen de quelques points de l'histoire geographique de Brésil (Paris, 1858). He believed that d'Avezac disagreed with his opinions because he supported the French assertions that the boundaries of French Guyana should stretch to the banks of the Amazon. D'Avezac replied to Varnhagen in Les voyages de Americ Vespuce au compte de l'Espange ... (Paris, 1858). It is also a criticism of Varnhagen's work about Vespucci's first voyage. Good presentation copy of a geographical history of Brazil.l Borba de Moraes, p. 57; Rodriques 301; Sabin 2491; not in Welsh.

LX, 389; [4], 388-562; [4], II, 479; [4], 380 pp.First French edition of a description of the South American territories visited by the Spanish military engineer and naturalist Félix de Azara, "to this day a major source of information about the land and peoples of Paraguay and Río de la Plata" (De Asúa). It contains a geographical, political, and civil description of these countries, a history of the discovery and conquests, a general account of its nature, a short abridgment of the author's book on quadrupeds and a translation of his ornithology of Paraguay. The Spaniard Don Félix de Azara (1746-1811) first published parts of his great travel account in Spanish at Madrid, 1802-1805, in 3 volumes, but much was added for the present French translation. It was translated into French by the naturalist Sonnini (who added several notes), with additional information by the zoologist and palaeontologist Georges Cuvier."Félix de Azara (1746-1811) was a military engineer who arrived in the Río de la Plata as one of the experts sent by the Spanish crown to demarcate the new boundary between Spanish and Portuguese territories according to the Treaty of 1750. Unable to fulfil his commission because of the delay of the Portuguese party, during the two decades he lived in South America Azara took to the study of the geography and zoology of the region. His books on quadrupeds and birds, modelled upon Buffon's Histoire naturelle, were the first thorough and systematic accounts of the beasts and birds of the land" (De Asúa).Very good set, virtually untrimmed and partly unopened.l M. de Asúa, Science in the vanished Arcadia (2014), pp. 26-27; Nissen, ZBI 175; Palau 20975; Sabin 2541.

82, [2] pp.Rare and attractively bound controversial work by the Brazilian bishop José Joaquim da Cunha de Azeredo Coutinho (1742-1821), stationed at Pernambuco (Olinda, Brazil) and author of several polemic works against the Portuguese government. In the present one he challenges the Mesa da Conscie^ncia e Ordens of 1532, which centralized the Portuguese monarch's power and put all Portuguese clergy stationed overseas at a disadvantage (in Cape Verde, Sao Thomé, Angola, Brazil, India and China). This controversial opinion led to the confiscation of the present publication shortly after it appeared on 20 June 1804, but several copies were distributed before that, including the present one. The red morocco binding with the coat of arms of Portugal in gold is superb. In fine condition.l Borba de Moraes I p. 230: "it is rare"; OCLC 968792117.

297, [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [2], [2 blank] pp.Rare first edition, in the original Spanish, here in the original publisher's illustrated paper wrappers, of an important work on Arabian horses, describing a voyage made in 1904 of a Spanish commission to Turkey, Syria, Mesopotamia and Palestine, to observe thoroughbred Arabian horses. They returned to Spain with 33 Percherons, including 27 considered first class horses. In the present work, the Spanish cavalry commander Luis Azpeitia de Moros describes their journey, their contact and negotiations with the people there and the horses they bought. Azpeitia de Moros's account is lavishly illustrated with photographic illustrations, all with Spanish captions printed below, not only of the areas they visited and their inhabitants, but also of the several horse specimens they bought, with their name and place of purchase in the printed captions The present work was used as reference source by Gladys Brown Edwards in her work on the history of the Arabian horse (The Arabian: war horse to show horse) (Boyd/Paul, p. 11). An English translation appeared in 2001 (In search of the Arabian horse) and an Arabic one was published in Riyadh in 2007 (al-Bahth `an al-husan al-`Arabi). The rare first edition of an important work on Arabian horses, even rarer in its original wrappers, as in the present copy, illustrated with drawings of scenes of the voyage.Wrappers a little browned and somewhat foxed (including the edges), spine slightly damaged (especially at the head) and partly cracked. [8], 189[=205], [1 blank] pp.First edition of a famous work on optics by the English natural philosopher and mathematician Roger Bacon (ca. 1220-ca. 1292). Bacon was well read in Arabic and ancient Greek sources on optics and perspective, a subject hardly studied in Europe during the earlier Middle Ages. The main sources for his theories were the writings of Euclid, Ptolemy and Alhazen (Ibn al-Haytham), and he followed Robert Grosseteste concerning the importance of light and in his emphasis on the use of lenses, not only for burning, but also for magnification to aid natural vision. Bacon advised magnifying glasses for old people as well as for people with weak eyes. The Perspectiva belonged to Bacon's Opus maius, compiled in manuscript in 1266-1267. The present edition was based on a medieval manuscript and was edited by Johann Combach (1585-1651), professor of philosophy at Marburg in GermanyWith a stain on the title-page and two on the last blank, probably from removing old stamps, browned throughout with a few small spots, but overall in good condition. [16], 358 pp.; [1] errata l.First edition of a rare Americanum. Jakob Baegert (1717-1772), a German Jesuit, wrote an interesting and by no means glowing account of the natives and the country "California" (the Baja Peninsula). Cowan comments in his note that, "according to his accounts the country was absolutely unfit for habitation; it was inhabited by wild and ferocious beasts; peopled by cruel and inhospitable savages; water was unfit to use; wood was scarce; the soil would not sustain life". It was written to disabuse the public mind as to the rumoured mineral riches and pearls from California, which had spread from Mexico to Madrid, and Germany. The book is nonetheless filled with valuable ethnographical and historical information. Chapter 20 is devoted to the Waicuri language of the California Indians. The map shows the location of the many Jesuit missions in the Baja, and shows Baegert's route along the west coast of Mexico in 1751 and his return route in 1768, after the expulsion of the Jesuits.Library label on inside front cover; a few light manuscript pencil annotations. Very good copy with the two plates, not present in all copies, of a rare Americanum.l De Backer & Sommervogel I, col. 760; Cowan, 1914, p. 9; JCB 1817; Sabin 4363; Wagner, Spanish Southwest 157.

[6], XXXIX, [11], 854, [2] pp.New quarto edition of the complete works of the famous Italian physician, Giorgio Baglivi (1668-1707). Contains in particular his dissertation illustrated with a plate on "The anatomy, the bite and the effects of the tarantula", published in 1696. Baglivi studied the anatomy of the tarantula, its habitat, the nature of its poison and the effects it had on humans and other animals. He took the analysis of these elements as an opportunity to describe the region where most cases of tarantula bites were recorded, Puglia, and the benefits of the - apparently - most effective therapy to cure these bites: music.Giorgio Baglivi, born in Ragusa and died in Rome, was the doctor of Popes Innocent XII and Clement XI. The latter appointed him a position as the professor of surgery and anatomy at the College of Sapience in Rome. He formulated a doctrine which rehabilitated the role of the solid parts of the human body (of their contractile properties and of the vital forces which animate them), whereas following Paracelsus and Jan Baptist van Helmont, exclusive importance was attached to liquids. Recognized therefore as a leader of the "solidists", he became a member of the Royal Society in 1698. The first edition of Baglivi's complete works published in Lyon dates from 1704. They were later, in 1788, reprinted by Philippe Pinel in Paris. The present work also includes a text by Giovanni Domenico Santorini (1681-1737), an Italian anatomist best known for his dissections of the human body. The spine is cracked and the hinges are somewhat weakened. Somewhat water-stained throughout, some wormholes in the head margin of the first 100 pages, not affecting the text, the title-page is slightly damaged, not affecting the text. Lacking the frontispiece (the portrait of the author).l Blake, 18th-century printed books in the NLM, p. 27; cf. Castiglioni, A history of medicine, pp. 539, 548; (1704 Lyon ed.) Several authors contributed to part 3, including Baker, Adams, Di Torre and Lieberkuhn.
