[8], 341, [1 blank], [2] pp.Important biography of the Portuguese nobleman and fourth viceroy of Portuguese India D. João de Castro (1500-1548), written by the Portuguese Catholic priest and historian Jacinto Freire de Andrade (1597-1657). The work was first published in Lisbon in 1651 and was the first biography in the Portuguese language. "Cette biographie est un des livres classiques de la langue portugaise" (Brunet)De Castro fought the Ottoman Empire at the Siege of Tunis (1535), where he refused knighthood offered by emperor Charles V. A few years later, probably around 1538, he left for India where he settled at Goa. He joined Estêvão de Gama (son of Vasco da Gama) on an expedition to Suez and played a major role in the defeat of the Gujarat Sultanate during their siege of Diu in 1546. In 1547 he was appointed viceroy of Portuguese India by the Portuguese King John III. The work also includes accounts of the battles between the Arabs and the Turks at Ormuz.Impressum partly illegible, possibly because of a library stamp removal, occasionally some minor foxing. Overall in good condition, wholly untrimmed, with most of the bolts unopened.l Porbase (4 copies); WorldCat (8 other copies); cf. Brunet I, 263 (first edition).

A Christmas pilgrimage to the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. in Persia made by P.B.C.. S.C.. H.P.C.[Greece, Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, 1931-1932]. Oblong photograph album (20.5 x 32 cm). With 72 sepia photographs (ca. 6 x 8.5 cm).
[19], [5 blank] ll.Album of personal photographs, commemorating a journey in 1931-1932 to the oilfields in modern Iran and Iraq, by a trio of travellers which included the Reverend Philip "Tubby" Clayton (1885-1972), the founder of the Toc H movement. Several photographs show Galilee, Jerusalem, Rutbah Wells (Ar-Rutbah) and about 10 show "fields", mostly the main oilfield at Masjed Soleyman, and its gas separator. In 1931 Clayton was invited by the director of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, the predecessor of the British Petroleum Company, "to inspect the work among the Company units in Persia and the Middle East generally" (Harcourt). Accompanied by two friends he travelled by plane, train and boat to Lake Tiberias and further by plane to Rutbah Wells, a British airfield where the group spent Christmas Eve with British, Dutch and German travellers. On Christmas Day they reached Abadan and from there visited the oilfields near Tehran, Ahvaz, Haftkel, Mohammerah, Basra and Masjed Soleyman. After a journey to Cairo and Alexandria they boarded an oil tanker for the return journey to Britain. This journey inspired Clayton to plead passionately for improvements to the life of the crews of oil tankers. He described "carrying oil by sea" as "the most lonely job on the world's waters" (Clayton). In 1940 he became chaplain of Anglo-Saxon Petroleum's tanker fleet and would subsequently sail on multiple tankers. The photographs must have been taken by Henry Pegg Chappell (1909-1997), since the other members appear he is the only member not present in the photographs and he does not, and only Clayton who completed the journey by oil tanker. A carbon copy of a typed list describing all photographs is inserted in the album. Since typed and handwritten additions to the carbon paper refer to Clayton in the third person, he probably typed the original list and gave Chappell this carbon copy to insert in his album. With an inscription, probably by the three travellers, on the title page. Binding slightly worn at the extremities. Paperclip and staple on the typescript rusted. In very good condition.l Clayton, "In a tanker", in: The Times (9 March 1932), p. 15; Harcourt, The impudent dreamer, pp. 216-219.

[1], [1 blank], [32], [1 blank], 417, [1 blank], [2] pp.First edition of this important and popular account of the unfortunate and famous expedition of George Anson, being considered as “the one most sought after” (Borba de Moraes). It is an account of Anson’s expedition to the western coast of South America, to harass the Spanish trading territories and cutting off the Spanish supplies of wealth in this way after the outbreak of the War of Jenkins’s Ear between Britain and Spain in 1739. Anson was the commander of 7 ships in 1740, including the Centurion, but soon his expedition threatened to turn into a fiasco. His squadron was battered by storms and bad weather causing damage and shipwrecks and many of his crew died from scurvy, typhus and dysentery. The remaining crew was transferred to the Centurion, the last remaining vessel, and Anson limped across the Pacific to Macao. In June 1743 he sailed to the Philippines were he achieved a substantial victory near Manila by capturing the Nuestra Senora de Covadonga, a Spanish galleon filled with gold. After sailing around the world, Anson returned to England in June 1744 and in spite of his enormous losses, he returned with large profits.Anson’s voyage, being one of the greatest voyages in the history of exploration and naval warfare, laid the foundation for British voyages and exploration of the Pacific and more specific for English trade in this area. The present account, being based upon Anson’s own ship journal, describing this troubled expedition, soon became highly popular in the 18th century and is even considered as “the masterpiece of descriptive travel” and “the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century” (Hill). With occasionally a correction of the text in brown ink and the name of Mr. Sweeting (?) added to the list of subscribers. Binding slightly worn around the edges and with a few minor scratches on the boards, some marginal foxing and staining to both the text leaves and plates (especially in the first part, barely affecting the plates except the map of the Pacific Ocean which is a little more stained), folding lines of some plates (especially all three large folding maps) reinforced but sometimes still with some very small tears on the folding lines, some corners of the folding plates slightly frayed, but overall a copy of the first edition of this important 18th-century travelogue with all the plates which is still in good condition.l Alden/Landis 748/225; Borba de Moraes I, p. 38; Cox I, p. 49; ESTC T89475; Hill 1817; Howgego A-100; Kroepelien 1086; Sabin 101175 (cf. 1625).

ANTHONY, John Duke.
Arab states of the Lower Gulf: People, Politics, Petroleum.Washington D.C., The Middle East institute, 1975. 8vo. With two black and white maps on the endpapers. Brown cloth with publisher's illustrated dust jacket.
X, 273, [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of a thorough description of the history of the nine Arab states of the Lower Gulf, that gained independence in 1971, just four years before the publication of this book. The author has managed to discuss the individual politics of each state and that of the bigger picture, making this a handbook for all who wish to learn more about Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain). The several infographics that are used to explain the political structures are very helpful in this respect. Oil plays a key role in the relationship between the individual states and this is intricately laid out by the American author. Because this book was written in such a key moment in the history of the region, it has gained much importance. The author Dr. John Duke Anthony is a leading figure in United States-Arab relations and has held many influential government positions in this field. Amongst others, he is the founder and president of the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations. He holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and Middle East Studies at the School of Advanced International Studies. In the years leading up to this publication the author has conducted first-hand research on the Lower Gulf region's political and socio-economic structures, obviously with oil playing a major role. This book was published in The James Terry Duce Memorial Series, which started in 1966. With author's presentation inscription: "For Miss Jane Smiley Hart - With many thanks, John, November 24, 1957". A very good copy, with the original dustjacket well preserved.

206, [1], [1 blank] pp.Third edition of one of the main textual sources - probably the most important - for late antique cartography, topography and geography, first published in 1512 by Henri Etienne in Paris and then in 1535 by the present printer and publishers in Lyon. The Itinerarium is designed to provide assistance for travellers. It records a network of itineraries over a vast area - the entire Roman Empire from Gadeira (= Cadiz) to Caesarea in Palestine and from Crimea to Alexandria - and lists the cities and stations on the routes that crisscrossed the Empire, including many roads (nearly 85,000 km) as far as the frontiers and the last outposts, like those just beyond Hadrian’s Wall in Great Britain. It generally gives distances in Roman miles (millia passus, ca. 1478 m), but in Gaul uses the local leuga.Attached is a short “Itinerarium maritimum” giving a few sea-routes (pp. 107-115), a list of islands (pp. 115-117), the hills of Rome (p. 117) and a list of the provinces of Italy, Gaul and Germany (pp. 117-124).The present edition adds three other similar late antique, or pseudo-late antique texts to the Itinerarium:- pp. 125-42: an alphabetical list of geographical names - rivers, lakes, mountains, etc. - occurring in the Roman poets, with special reference to Virgil, Ovid and Lucan, by Vivius Sequester (4th or 5th century). Several of the names do not appear in our copies of the poets; unless this is the result of carelessness or ignorance, the compiler must have had access to sources no longer extant. Newer editions include the Teubner edited by R. Gelsomino (1967) and the edition of P.G. Parroni (Milan 1965). The text was recently studied by Pier Angelo Perotti, “Note a Vibio Sequestre”, in: Giornale italiano di filologia, 56 (2004), pp. 87-99.- pp. 143-68: A sort of short “Michelin guide” for Rome by Publius Victor, De regionibus urbis Romae liber, probably a literary forgery of the 15th-century. The first edition, printed in Milan in 1503, presents it as a text by a newly discovered late antique author. It lists the streets and main buildings of the city of Rome’s 14 districts: from the Porta Capena, Caeli montium, Isis et Serapis Moneta, Alta Semita and Via lata, to the Transtiberina, including several interesting notes added to the list of buildings, such as the capacity of the various theatres (Colosseum: 87,000 places; Theatrum Balbi: 30,000 places; Theatrum Marcelli 30,000 places; Circus Maximus 385,000 places !); the number of obelisks, bridges, public baths, nymphaea and libraries (there were no less than 29 public libraries in Rome!).- pp. 169-206: Dionysius Afer or Dionysius Periegetes, Description of the world, written at the end of the first century and faithfully translated into 1087 Latin verses by the eminent grammarian Priscianus (fl. ca. 1500), one of the “triumviri in re Grammatica” (the other two of the triumvirate being Donatus and Servius). With an owner's inscription on the title-page: “Ex libr. Adriani L'archevêque medici Rothomag. 1743” (Adrian, physician to the archbishop of Rouen, from 1733 to 1759 namely Cardinal Nicolas de Saulx-Tavannes]), and a bookplate of Léon Duchesne de La Sicotière (1812-1895), whose library was auctioned in 1902. Primeira[-segunda] parte.Lisbon, Pedro Ferreira, 1730. 2 parts in 1 volume. 4to. With woodcut title vignettes, headpieces and initials. Modern blue marbled paper wrappers.
23, [1 blank]; 24 pp.First edition of a detailed description of a procession in the city of Mecca on 16 July 1728, ordered by Ahmed III, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire at that time. It was written by António Correia de Lemos, whose pseudonym was João Carlos de Antonio. The first part of the work opens with some remarks on the Ottoman Empire and its greatest extent before Correia de Lemos focuses on the procession held at Mecca in 1728. The Sultan (the text calls for Mustafa II, but he had already died in 1703, so Ahmed III seems more plausible) was depressed as a large Persian force was marching against the Ottoman Empire. To win the favour of God and Mohammed against the arms of the Persians and to quell the plague, which occurred every year in the city, he ordered all governors and religious men in the Ottoman Empire to congregate at Mecca for an Islamic prayer procession. The present work contains an extensive description of the preparations for the procession, the procession itself and detailed descriptions of the several groups that participated in it. The first part also contains translations of the edicts of both the Sultan as his Mufti, dated 1727 (= AH 1140) and 1728 (= AH 1141). The second part of the work includes Mufti's speech delivered at Mecca, but also other details on the Islamic customs during the procession. The work ends with an extensive story of the life of the Islamic prophet Mohammed.A few spots throughout, some very light toning to the wrappers, bookblock "broken" as both quires are glued on the wrappers, margins trimmed close to the text with loss of some quire signatures. Otherwise in good condition. A very rare work on Islamic customs in Mecca, seldomly found complete.l Coimbra, Catalogo de miscelânea: MIsc. 17, 391-392; Innocencio, I, p. 116; VIII, p. 118; Porbase (1 copy: part 1 only); WorldCat (5 copies: 2 with part 1 only).

[1], [1 blank], [46], “285” [= 281], [32], [1 blank] pp.Rare first and only edition, in Latin, of the first and only official pharmacopoeia for Antwerp, containing hundreds of medicinal recipes and throwing a great deal of light on 17th-century medical practice in the Low Countries. The work's separate part with the title "Selectiora chymica" shows the rising importance of chemistry in the production of medicines. Although Plantin published an important and influential 1568 Antwerp edition of Valerius Cordus's Dispensatorium, first published posthumously at Nürnberg in 1546, it was not produced by order of any official municipal body. In 1624 the magistrates of Antwerp set up a Collegium Medicum, which did declare that medicines were to be prepared following Cordus until further notice. In 1659 the Antwerp Collegium Medicum decided to produce their own pharmacopoeia, primarily at the impetus of their secretary and future director, Michiel Boudewijns (1591-1681), best known as the father of modern medical ethics. Although his name does not appear on the title-page, the book does attribute the 18-page preface to him and he was probably the principal compiler of the book. The decision to compile it makes explicit reference to those published at Augsburg (1564), Rome (1583), Amsterdam (1636) and Brussels (1641), but Valerius may have remained the most important source. No apothecaries were officially consulted in the compilation of the pharmacopoeia, reflecting the growing status of physicians and declining status of apothecaries.Although the letterpress title-page is dated 1660, the engraved title-page (when present) is apparently always dated 1661 and in some copies the 1660 has been corrected to 1661. The work has extensive preliminaries with dedications, notes to the reader, laudatory verses, etc., but some copies include an unsigned bifolium inserted after a2 containing an additional dedication, not present here. The present copy does have the rarer addendum leaf at the end and an addendum slip on Q3r supplying the omitted last line of that page (with the quire signature and catchword below it). The addendum leaf has three blind impressions of the type for this addendum slip in its head margin. With minimal wear at the edges. With a brown spot in the outer margin of the first two gatherings; a very good copy.l Anet (6 copies); Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 62-63 (5 copies); STCV 12879911 (5 copies incl. 1 defective); not in Krivatsy; Wellcome.

[2], 64, [2] ll. plus folding woodcut.A great and influential work on cosmography, perspective and many related subjects, in the original Latin, being Gemma Frisius's extensively revised and expanded version of Petrus Apianus's account of cosmography, providing readable explanations and numerous clarifying woodcut illustrations. Apianus and Frisius discuss latitude and longitude and their determination, the earth's climatic zones, maps, surveying, triangulation, and give a brief description of the continents, including the New World. The illustrations include a folding cordiform world map. The ingenious volvelles with their moving dials and pointers clearly illustrate the position and movement of celestial bodies. With a few small marginal tears, chips or excisions, one at the foot of the title-page very slightly affecting the border of the woodcut and one at the head of the title-page removing an old owner's inscription, and browned water stains at the foot throughout and at the head of the last 5 quires.l Adams A1284; Belg. Typ. 5087; cf. Van Ortroy, Frisius 28 (Bellère issue); Sabin 1738-1756 (other eds. & issues); for Apianus: DSB I, pp. 178-179.

[22] pp.First edition, in Latin and German, of Apianus's description of his newly invented sundial in the form of a poplar leaf. This instrument can be used to tell the hours of the day, the times of sunrise and sunset, and the so-called "Jewish" hours dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into 12 parts. The stunning woodcuts were executed by Hans Brosamer (ca. 1500-1554), with his monogram on the title woodcut next to the image of a woodblock cutter's knife. The title in the present copy is in an uncorrected state, with "RFCENS" and "RFDACTUM" for "RECENS" and "REDACTUM."Apianus (1495-1552), cartographer and professor of mathematics at the University of Ingolstadt, was a pioneer in the design of astronomical and geographical instruments. He set up a printing office in his own home in order to oversee his scientific publications. With wormholes slightly affecting the text and illustrations, but otherwise a very good copy and with generous margins. Lacking the final blank leaf, but with a contemporary fly-leaf at the front and another at the back. A pioneering horological work, beautifully illustrated.l Adams A-1289; DSB I, pp. 178-179; Van Ortroy, Apian 106; Zinner, Astron. Instrumente, pp. 233-234; cf. WorldCat (microfilm only).

[39], [1 blank] pp.First edition of Apianus’s first full description of the “horoscopion”, a geometric quadrant which could be used as a scientific instrument for determining the hour of the day astronomically and for measuring distances, heights and depths. In this work, Apianus describes not only the instrument itself, but also the practical application of it. The work is divided into four parts. The first part describes the instrument, the second part is strictly astronomical, the third part is devoted to solving problems by measuring heights, distances and depths of distant objects. The Horoscopion Apiani was printed at the author’s own press at Ingolstadt. It was dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who granted Apianus a printing monopoly in 1532 and 1534 and who appointed Apianus later as his court mathematician. This work was, like all of Apianus’s works, very influential and can therefore be regarded as a treasure for 16th-century mathematical and astronomical knowledge.Binding slightly rubbed, many wormholes throughout the whole book (sometimes affecting the text), a few small tears in the lower margin, last pages slightly water stained, first endpaper a bit crinkled, but still a rare work in good condition.l Adams, A-1290; Honeyman 112; Houzeau & Lancaster 2395; Stillwell 811; USTC 664150; Zinner, Astronomischen Literatur, 1512; for the author: DSB I, pp. 178-179.

[40], CCCCCXII, [8] pp.First and only edition. Printed at the expense of the banker Raimund Fugger, this work presents classical inscriptions and statues collected all over Europe (including many in Fugger's own collection). The text is based on earlier studies by Peutinger, Pirckheimer and others. An exceptionally fine work from the private press of Peter Apianus (1495-1552), mainly known as a mathematician and geographer. The title woodcut by Hans Brosamer (after Dürer) and Fugger's coat of arms (by M. Ostendorfer) are splendidly hand-coloured and highlighted with gold; undoubtedly the work of the book's previous owner, Johann Spiegler, who signs his name below the imprint on the title page ("Annumeror libris Joannis Spiegleri Juliomagensis"). Spiegler is known as a Constance miniaturist active during the first half of the 18th century (cf. Brun, SKL III, 1913) and is sometimes identified with the Constance painter Franz Joseph (Johann) Spiegler (1691-1757; cf. Thieme & Becker XXXI, 370 ff.).Slight water stains and torn edges near end; occasional marginal restorations. Page 1r (whose textblock extendsfar into the margin) is shaved with the loss of the final character in the right column. An uncommonly beautiful copy, last in the collection of the Maryland pharmaceutical investor Charles W. [40], CCCCXII, [8] pp.First edition of the first work on classical inscriptions printed in Germany and the first printed world corpus of classical inscriptions. It includes inscriptions on tombs and other stones, but also on ceramics and other objects. The large woodcut on the title-page shows the "allegory of eloquence" after a drawing in Albrecht Dürer's ca. 1514 Ambraser Kunstbuch: Hermes with a woman, a soldier, a scholar and a cleric tethered to his tongue from their ears. This allusion to the power of words must have been chosen as especially suited to a book of inscriptions. The book was printed at the private printing office of the great astronomer and geographer Petrus Apianus, at the expense of Raimund Fugger. The latter also provided from his collections the material for the larger part of the illustrations. The inscriptions, some taken from works by Peutinger, Pirckheimer, Choler, Giocondo and others, are arranged geographically. The book includes some obviously fictitious items lifted from the Hypnerotomachia Polifili (Venice 1499) and from Ciriaco d'Ancona. It must have been an extremely expensive production, and the famous banking family Fugger may have been better equipped to finance it than many royal families.Library stamp and early owner's name on title-page. In very good condition, with only an occasional minor smudge or small stain and with generous margins. Inside front hinge cracked, spine faded, corners and spine chafed. A "monumental" milestone in the study of classical Roman inscriptions, preserving important records of many inscriptions now lost.l Adams A-1291; USTC 666636; VD 16, A 3086.
