Offentliche Bekentnis der reinen Lehre des Evangelii, und Confutatio der itzigen Schwermer. ... Item ein Register Illyrici, etlicher bittern unwarheiten Menii und anderer.Jena, Thomas Rewart, 1558. Small 4to (18.5 x 14.5 cm). With two woodcut initials. Modern half cloth.
[28] ll.First issue of the first and only edition of a pamphlet on the "true Evangelical doctrine", by the German Lutheran theologian and reformer Nicolaus von Amsdorf (1483-1565). The pamphlet was published after Johann Pfeffinger held two disputations on the nature of free will. This pamphlet "... reproduced Pfeffinger's teaching in distorted form, maintaining that Pfeffinger and his colleagues had taught that human beings can prepare themselves for grace by their own free will and situate themselves so that God can give them grace..." (Kolb). The text is followed by a section against the "bitter falsehoods" as believed by Justus Menius (1499-1558) and others. Included at the end is a brief and sharp reply by Pfeffinger.A few marginal water stains, otherwise in very good condition.l Kolb, Lutheran ecclesiastical culture: 1550-1675, pp. 47-48; VD16, A2381 (A2382, the second issue).

A very nice and historically interesting drawing by Caspar Jacobsz. Philips (1732-1789), the well known Amsterdam draughtsman, engraver and etcher, art historian, author and publisher, together with two engravings. Although the two prints do not mention the name of Caspar Philips as inventor, they probably were made after the drawing described above (or an earlier version of it) and its pendant in the Amsterdam city archives. Very fine copies, all under passe-partouts.l Cf. Muller, historieplaten 4224a and 4227b.

't Huis Kostverlooren.[Netherlands, ca. 1700]. A view in brown ink with light and dark grey watercolour washes on laid paper (16.5 x 21.5 cm), with a manuscript caption at the head. Mounted in passepartout.
Attractive view in brown ink with grey washes of the picturesque Kostverloren manor on the Amstel River, just outside Amsterdam. The manor was originally built at the end of the 15th century. In 1650 it was severely damaged by fire, but it was soon restored. In 1822 Kostverloren was razed. The manor was famously depicted by Rembrandt, Ruisdael and also by Abraham Rademaker (1676/77-1735), one of the most important topographic artists of his day. Rademaker’s drawing closely matches the present view in style and shows the exact same scene, from the trees on the left to the smaller house on the right. The only difference is the season: the trees depicted here are much fuller.Slightly foxed, but otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Blokland & Dumas, de kasteeltekeningen van Abraham Rademaker C58.

[8], “210” [=208], [12] = 228 pp.Rare fourth edition of a Dutch translation of the 1636 Amsterdam Pharmacopoea. Unlike the original Latin edition, the Dutch translation not only lists ingredients, but also provides recipes to prepare the medicines. The numbers for quantities, as the publisher notes in the foreword, are spelled out to avoid any (fatal) problems arising from typesetting errors. A list of medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final page. The original Latin Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis, the first Dutch pharmacopoeia, with recipes for nearly 200 medicines, was compiled anonymously by Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674) by order of the city of Amsterdam, to serve as an official legal standard for the correct preparation of numerous medicines. Several cities in the southern Low Countries and Germany, and even London, had produced pharmacopoeias before any Dutch city and Tulp based his on those published in Augsburg, Cologne and London, primarily on the 1622 edition of the Pharmacopoea Augustana (providing about 85% of the content), with some material from the 1627 Dispensatorium Coloniense and the 1627 edition of the Pharmacopoea Londinensis.Browned and spotted throughout, with a few small holes and with a large water stain in the lower margin. [8], 189, [19] pp.Rare ninth(?) edition in the original Latin of the Amsterdam pharmacopoeia, the official pharmacological recipe book issued by the Collegium Medicum of Amsterdam. Daems & Vandewiele notes only one copy, privately owned by D.A. Wittop Koning, and we have located only 3 copies beside the present one. Blaeu, who published the first edition in 1636, published what he called the fifth (1650) and sixth (1660), but in fact Janssonius copied Blaeu’s 1650 edition in 1651. The later Latin editions are unnumbered. Daems & Vandewiele tentatively date a Hendrik Wetstein edition between 1693 and 1701, but its frontispiece, by Coenraed Decker (1650-1685), a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe, appears to have been engraved for that edition, suggesting a date between 1676 (Wetstein’s earliest imprints) and ca. 1685. The present frontispiece, by Hendrik Elandt (who died in 1705) is clearly based on Decker’s. Continuing Blaeu’s numbering, the present edition would therefore be the eighth, but in fact it is at least the ninth. The Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis first appeared in 1636 on the initiative of the well-known professor Nicolas Tulp (the subject of Rembrandt’s famous painting “The anatomy lesson by Dr. Nicolas Tulp”): Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 38-39. VIII, I-XV, [1 blank], 385, [1 blank]; [4], XIX, [1 blank], 565 [=465], [1 blank]; [4], XX, 452;Second edition of an extensive history of the reign of King João (John) III of Portugal (1502-1557), written by Francisco d'Andrada (1540-1614). During his rule, Portuguese possessions were extended in Asia, and in the New World through the Portuguese colonization of Brazil. The majority of the 419 chapters deal with Portugal's overseas possessions and trading posts in India (Diu, Goa, Chaul, Calicut), China, Ceylon, the Moluccas, the Middle East (Ormuz, Suez), Africa (Zanzibar, Ethiopia, Mozambique), Brazil, etc. The chapters discuss newly acquired lands, the governors of the regions, voyages and travels, wars and sieges, and trade, Portugal being one of the first countries with trading posts in China and Japan. Though João III's reign was marked by the introduction of the inquisition in Portugal from 1536 onwards, the present publication only briefly deals with the subject. Some other chapters deal with Jesuit missions to the east. With a few occasional small spots, otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed and most of the bolts in the third and fourth volumes unopened. Paper wrappers soiled and worn.l Howgego, to 1800, A 90; cf. Bosch 52; Maggs, Bibl. Brasiliensis 104; not in Borba de Moraes.
