Although the three different biblical and religious works were not published at the same time, namely in 1870 and 1884, they were all published by the so-called Nederlandsche Bijbel-Compagnie, which was a joint between the Amsterdam Bible printer Brandt and a Haarlem Bible printer, namely John Enschedé. This beautifully bound copy is a neat example of one of these Bible publications of the Nederlandsche Bijbel-Compagnie.Binding a little worn (especially around the spine, edges and cornerpieces) the rings with some light wear, paper edges a little soiled, some soiling from the silver-plating on the endpapers. The first volume of the Old Testament has only the engraved general title-page, while each of the remaining Old Textament volumes as printed has a separate volume title-page naming the books it covers (including the volume with the apocrypha, miscellaneos texts and the indexes. After the general title-page follow a preface to the reader, the decree of the Council of Trent, "Paulus Papa V. Ad futuram rei memoriam" (Pope Paul V died in 1621) and a privilege, dated Brussels, 1611. The Old Testament also has prefaces to the books. The New Testament has no preliminaries except its title-page. In 1546 the Council of Trent ordered a revision of the Vulgate Latin Bible to establish an authorized Catholic text. Pope Sixtus V ordered the preparation of the new edition, printed by the Vatican Press and published in 1590. The book has been variously described as 12mo, 16mo and 24mo, but it is in fact a 24mo in 8s. The three divisional titles possibly printed specially for this copy have vertical chainlines and may be in 18mo format. The binding stamps are finely cut and skilfully applied, especially the curls on the spine, so it is likely to have been executed by one of the great French binders of ca. 1700.With an owner's inscription on a free endleaf in volume IV as bound ("ce livre apartient a monseigneur L[']Evesque D[']Evreux"), presumably Jean Le Normand (1662-1733), Bishop of Evreux from 1711 to his death, whose bookplate appears in 7 of the 9 volumes: the handwriting is old-fashioned for 1711, so the book could have come to Le Normand from an earlier Bishop of Evreux, but perhaps he simply wrote in an old-fashioned style. The pagination of volume ii accidentally omits numbers 577-578 but no leaf is missing there. Very slightly browned, with an occasional minor spot and with the library stamps on the letterpress title-pages abraded, but still generally in very good condition. With small cracks in the hinges of 4 volumes, minor wear on the board edges and corners, and volume III as bound (vol. ii as printed) darkened, but the binding is also otherwise in very good condition, with the tooling clear and sharp. With Picart's folio print-Bible, Figures de la Bible (1720), the most sumptuous pictorial bible published in the Netherlands, here in the rare first edition, published by the artist himself, and the series of 6 maps and plans by Nicolaas I Visscher (1618-1679). The prints and maps are inserted in the relevant places in the Old Testament, New Testament and Apocrypha, with the New Testament and Apocrypha bound together to make the second volume. The whole is most luxuriously and splendidly produced, and bound by the so-called "stag bindery", active in Rotterdam at least 1693-1743, “the most important eighteenth-century bindery in Rotterdam and ... one of the most distinguished Dutch workshops in the first half of that century” (Storm van Leeuwen, IIA, p. 432). A truly unique piece, combining the best of all aspects of Dutch book production, Elzevier's printing (excellent presswork), Picart's engravings and a binding by a Rotterdam workshop undoubtedly the equal of Magnus.Storm van Leeuwen notes that the book comes from the library of the great Dutch book collector Hendrik Adriaan vander Marck (ca. 1667-1726), though we do not find it in the 1727 auction catalogue of his library. It descended to the Tjeenk Willink collection. In very good condition, with some of the inserted prints and maps slightly browned and an occasional minor marginal defect. The bindings with a few minor scratches, a few scuffs on the board edges and the spines slightly worn, but still very good, most of the tooling fine. The 1619 Synod of Dordrecht established a committee to prepare the new translation, and leading Dutch scholars worked on it for nearly twenty years before Paulus Aertsz. van Ravesteyn (ca. 1586-1655) published the first edition in 1637. The 6 maps and the engraved illustrations were produced to be inserted into Van Ravesteyn's folio editions. The series of 336 illustrations by Claes Jansz. Visscher with eight to one leaf, are engraved by Cornelis Danckerts. With some browning, but still generally in good condition and with large margins. The binding has been rebacked, as noted, and the "sharkskin" on the boards has some cracks and wear, but the silver furnishings and gauffered edges are well-preserved. They were explicitly made for the Keur Bibles with, for example, Bible scenes (rather than figures from classical mythology) decorating the world map. The world map shows two hemispheres, a copernican solar system in the upper and a ptolemaic in the lower smaller circle. The four continents are symbolically represented in the four corners. The binding appears to date from the middle quarters of the 18th century, so it may have been bound and presented for the occasion of the 1738 wedding. In very good condition. [18], 278; 112; 70; 132 ll.First edition of this beautifully illustrated Dutch translation of the influential Luther Bible, with the engraved title-page, all plates and a large tailpiece expertly contemporary hand-coloured and strikingly highlighted in gold. This edition, published by (the widow of) Van Baardt, is also known as the "Visscher Bible", after its translator. It is certain that Visscher based his translation on Luther's original Bible and the two known Dutch translations: the "Lotter Bible" by Bugenhagen (1554) and the "Biestkens Bible" (1560). Apparently, Visscher did not use the new and by then already renowned Dutch States translation (commissioned during the Synod of Dordrecht in 1618-1619) and did not want to change Luther's original translation, which unfortunately resulted in a difficult to read work. Nevertheless, this became the standard Bible of the Dutch Lutherans. (Darlow & Moule).The present work was printed by Rieuwert Dircksz van Baardt (1599-1648) - according to I.H. van Eeghen - at the presses of Lodewijk III Elsevier (1604-1670). The work was published after Van Baardt's death by his widow and was illustrated with engraved maps by Nicolaes Visscher (1618-1679) after his father Claes Jansz. Visscher (1587-1652) and a complete series of Mattheüs Merian the Elder's (1593-1650) reduced scenes engraved by Cornelis Danckerts (1603-1656) and printed by Frederik de Wit (1630-1706) in Amsterdam. These two sets of engraved plates were published separately for the purpose of being added to Bibles such as the present one, or the Dutch States Bible for example. The illustrations are expertly hand-coloured and all highlighted in gold.With the small bookplate of Jan Willem Six de Vromade (1872-1936): "Ex bibliotheca J.W. Six" on the front paste-down. The binding shows very slight signs of wear, mainly around the spine, minor foxing and spotting throughout, mainly to the outer margins, with a ca. 4 cm tear in the foot margin of leaves a5 and a6 in the New Testament, without loss but slightly affecting the text, the last ca. 10% of the leaves show a very small (to max. ca. 1 cm in the last few leaves) wormhole in the gutter margin, barely affecting the commentary but not the main text. [4], 410; [106] ll.Extraordinary copy of the first edition, published by Moretus (Moerentorf) & Van Keerberghen, of the famous Moerentorf Bible in the vernacular Dutch language, printed in 1599, especially interesting for its vivid contemporary hand-colouring and for its richly blind-tooled contemporary binding. The authoritative Moerentorf Bible or Moretus Bible, was a revision of the 1548 Louvain Bible in Dutch, but corrected based on the improved Latin Vulgate of 1592 published by the authority of Pope Clement VIII. The Moerentorf Bible met extraordinary success and "became the standard Bible for Dutch Roman Catholics" (Darlow & Moule) for almost three centuries, being repeatedly reprinted as the official Dutch translation of the Vulgate in the Low Countries.Jan Moerentorf, better known as Jan I Moretus, published this revised Dutch translation of the Old and New Testament together in 1599 with the title Biblia sacra. The first woodcut of the Old Testament, in Genesis, is signed "P.B" by Peter van der Borcht, a Flemish painter, draughtsman and etcher who was full-time assistant to Christopher Plantin and illustrated many of his liturgical works. The other woodcut illustrations in the Old Testament are copied from the engraved print series of the German painter and printmaker Hans Sebald Beham (1500-1550), who was especially known for his very small engravings. The present edition appeared in two issues, one with the imprint of Moretus alone and the present one with the imprint of both Moretus and Van Keerberghen. Poortman shows a completely different first woodcut illustration (not signed P.B.) for the Moretus version, says its other illustrations are printed from a different series of blocks, differing in detail and rendering the scenes in mirror image, and also notes differences in the orthography. With the bookplate (on the front paste-down) and library stamp (on a free endleaf, the back of the title-page, and the first text page) of Wetenschappelijke Bibliotheek Eindhoven, the former monastic library of the Augustinian monastery in Eindhoven and one of the most important scholarly theological libraries of the Netherlands. Also with one contemporary annotation on Pp1 of the Old Testament.Binding slightly worn around the edges, especially around the spine, edges a little dust-soiled and some damage to the back board where the leather fastenings were originally attached to the boards with brass pins. Minor marginal stains, spots and dust-soiling, mostly in the first part, and a few creases throughout the book, a small tear in the right lower corner of Oo6 in the Old Testament (not affecting the text), a larger tear (partly restored) and restoration in the foot margin in L6 of the Old Testament. The colouring of the initials and woodcuts has slightly browned the paper. Overall, however, the Bible is in good condition. The translation, a joint effort of American missionaries and Hawaiian advisers, was a monumental work of language and scholarship. "Neither of the two very different groups of people who produced the Baibala - the missionary scholars working with ancient texts and the Hawaiian chiefs and advisors, guardians of a millennium of traditional Kanaka learning - could have produced even a pedestrian Bible translation on their own. Together, through over a decade of incessant and mostly fruitful labor and cooperation, they created a work for the ages, among the best Bible translations of their century, and an enduring literary monument today" (Lyon).The first gospels in the Hawaiian language were printed in 1827-1828, ultimately leading to a complete translation of the New Testament in 1835, which was revised in 1837. The first translation of the Old Testament was published in 1838 and, together with the 1837 New Testament incorporated in a complete edition of the Bible in three volumes. In 1843 these texts were reprinted, with several mistakes corrected, in a more compact version and then bound together to form this edition of the Bible. Apparently sales of the 10,000 copies printed were slow, with records showing that "between 400 and 600 Bibles were bound and presumably distributed each year" (Forbes). This slow distribution could explain why no new edition of the complete Bible in Hawaiian appeared until 1868.With an 1853 owner's inscription on the title-page. With a Greek and Latin title-page including Estienne’s woodcut basilisk device as King’s printer (and 1 repeat), his woodcut olive tree device on the otherwise blank last page (N6v), 3 single-piece decorated architectural frames with putti, etc. (plus 3 repeats) for the tables of the Eusebian canons for the Gospels, 9 woodcut headpieces and 21 decorated woodcut initial letters (plus numerous repeats). Set almost entirely in the three sizes of Claude Garamont’s famous Greek printing types, known as the Grecs du Roi, and the first use of the largest size. The present copy has been richly decorated, probably around the time it was bound, not just by colouring Estienne’s woodcut devices (the basilisk in gold), decorative frames, headpieces and initials, but also by adding extensive decorations in rococo style, the whole using a large number of mostly bright colours plus gold and silver. Gold-tooled black sheepskin, the gold-tooled spine with the title, publisher and date in the 2nd and 6th of 7 compartments in roman capitals, gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins, gilt and richly gauffered edges, Dutch combed and curled endpapers.

[32], “272” [= 268], 202, [2] pp.Robert Estienne’s ground-breaking critical edition of the Greek New Testament, including variant readings from 15 manuscripts (plus the printed New Testament text of the 1514 Computensian Polyglot), mostly of the manuscripts from the French King François I’s Bibliotheque Royale, but most importantly including for the first time the 5th-century manuscript later known as the Codex Bezae, then in a monastic library in Lyon. Each of these sources was designated by a Greek letter in Estienne’s shoulder notes in the gutter mergin giving the variants. Estienne proved himself the consummate scholar-printer, strongly influenced by Erasmus, producing one of the greatest monuments of Renaissance erudition. This opened up opportunities for further research and for new interpretations of the New Testament text, opportunities often more appreciated by Protestants than by the conservative Catholics of the Council of Trent. The book frequently came under fire. The three sizes of highly ligatured Greek types cut by the rising star of French typographic punchcutting, Claude Garamont (ca. 1505/10-1561), also made it one of the greatest monuments of Renaissance typography: “sumptuous” (Schreiber), “the best type of its kind that has ever been cut” (Proctor quoted by Updike), and it assured Estienne of “sa réputation comme savant littérateur et typographe distingue” (Renouard). Mortimer notes that the headpiece on H7r (p. 125) was replaced during the press run (perhaps it was accidentally damaged). Our copy has what she believes is the earlier state of this form, with a crowned angel head in the headpiece.The first part of the text (a-o) contains the four Gospels and the acts of the Apostles (plus lives of the Evangelists by Sophronius and Dorotheus), while the second part (A-N) contains the Epistles and Revelation, with a Greek divisional-title - with the basilisk device but without imprint - on A1r: the word basilisk is related to the Greek word for king. Estienne’s 1-page Latin note to the reader is set in a roman type, as are the Latin words on the title-page, but otherwise the book is set entirely in Greek except for the quire signatures and the arabic numerals for the pagination. Although Estienne had produced two earlier Greek New Testaments (in 1546 and 1549) they were in small format with no critical apparatus and were completely overshadowed by the present edition. In the present copy, all the woodcut devices, frames, headpieces and initials are coloured in a wide variety of bright colours, gold and silver, with extensive rococo decorations added, as noted above..With numerous short marginal notes in Latin, written in dark brown ink, probably from the time of the binding and colouring. With a gift inscription in English on an endleaf at the front, the name difficult to decipher, but something like: “W. J. Buebile|with much love from|his mother|February 13th 1925”. Three preliminary leaves with marginal tears repaired and a margonal stain in one leaf, but otherwise in good condition. The raised bands and other extremities are worn and a couple sewing supports broken at the hinge, but the binding is otherwise in good condition, with nearly all of the tooling well-preserved.
