london, Martin Secker, 1934. Reprint. Original black cloth with original publisher's printed label to spine. Spine a little sunned, 291 pp. A very nice, tight clean copy. First published in 1910 and hailed as the outstanding prose work of early 20th century Russia. First published in English in 1926. Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin 1870-1953 [???´? ??????´???? ??´???] is considered one of the great masters of Russian language and was the first to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. The translator Isabel Hapgood studied a number of Slavonic languages including Russian and Old Church Slavonic. She admired the Russian Orthodox Liturgy and choral singing. She also travelled through Russia and met Tolstoy. Peter Henry in Cornwall (1998), Terras (1985).

London, John Rodker, 1930. Small 8vo. a very nice bright copy of the first English edition, in original white dust-wrapper with colour-illustrated on-lay. Clean and tight. (It was re-issued later under Rodker's Pushkin Press imprint). Cover illustration possibly by Nora Fry Lavrin, prominent artist and wife of Janko Lavrin. Used; Very Good Ivan Cankar, founder of Modernism in Slovene literature. The publisher, one of the so-called "Whitechapel-Boys", John Rodker, was himself a modernist writer best known for publishing T S Eliot and Ezra Pound. He also worked on editions of Ulysses both in Paris and London. Rodker also started a number of publishing houses: The Ovid Press (1919), The Egoist Press (with Harriet Weaver, 1922), The Pushkin Press (1937) and perhaps most successfully Imago (1938), publishing Freud's works. Janko Lavrin, Slovene writer, spent much of his life in Britain as Professor of Slavonic Studies. Hardback.

Clean, tight and bright. Usual mild browning of paper. ?? ?????? ??????. First emigré edition. First published in instalments in Novy Mir, Dudinstev's landmark novel about an engineer opposed by bureaucrats as he seeks to implement his invention caused a sensation in the USSR. The tale became a literary symbol of the Khrushchev era although official reaction soon turned against the work and Dudintsev suffered years of poverty. In later years, however, accolade returned. In 2005, Mosfilm director Stanislav Govorukhin released the film based on the novel.
