DUDINTSEV, Vladimir
Not by Bread Alone: Translated from the Russian by Dr. Edith Bone.
London, Hutchinson, 1957. First English edition. vii[[i]+447 pp. epilogue with facsimile signature, in original unclipped dust-wrapper. Loosely enclosed 3 contemporary review cuttings (C. P. Snow, V. S. Pritchett in New Statesman, and Richard Newnham in Truth). In very good condition. Clean, bright and tight. First published in instalments in Novy Mir, Dudinstev's landmark novel about an engineer opposed by bureaucrats as he seeks to implement his invention caused a sensation in the USSR. The tale became a literary symbol of the Khrushchev era although official reaction soon turned against the work and Dudintsev suffered years of poverty. In later years, however, accolade returned. In 2005, Mosfilm director Stanislav Govorukhin released the film based on the novel.

ESENIN. YESENIN. Sergei
Izbrannyy Yesenin Stikhi I Poemy [Selected Verse and Poems]
Riga, Gramatu Draugs, 1928. A good copy, clean and tight. Very minor chipping to spine ends, usual browning to paper. Used; Very Good The poet Sergei Yesenin (Esenin), 'pastoral-angel' 'tavern-rake' and bard of the Soviet Empire lived a short and turbulent life but posthumously became one of the most widely-read of 20th century Russian poets. He was a founder member of the avant-garde "Imaginist" group. Branded both decadent and hooligan, anti-Soviet and Soviet hero, he was vulnerable, sinful and all too human. Tantalisingly, he was married briefly to Isadora Duncan. Esenin is described as essentially 'Russian'; he is the peasant embodying tragic pathos and the forlorn dream of a rural idyll (McVay 1998). He killed himself in a Leningrad Hotel in 1925 after a short-spanned but meteoric literary career. Hélène Heinsdorf's decorated ex-libris, pencilled note below (Could be the Polish journalist Helene Heinsdorf-Lewinson? See Sonderfahndungsliste G.B.). Paperback.
