First published in 1910 and hailed as the outstanding prose work of early 20th century Russia. First published in English in 1926. Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin 1870-1953 [???´? ??????´???? ??´???] is considered one of the great masters of Russian language and was the first to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. The translator Isabel Hapgood studied a number of Slavonic languages including Russian and Old Church Slavonic. She admired the Russian Orthodox Liturgy and choral singing.
