First published outside samizdat in Paris and in Frankfurt in 1969. Important work by Soviet dissident and human rights campaigner who died age 48 in 1986 while in prison. Marchenko gained international fame in 1969 through this book; a 1966 autobiographical account about his incarceration in Soviet labour camps and prisons.

German Lutheran pastor, Romantic poet and novelist. His work was greatly praised by Wittgenstein who recommended him to Bertrand Russell.
