, Die Olympishen Spiele in Los Angeles 1932
Die Olympishen Spiele in Los Angeles 1932
Hamburg, Germany, H. F. & Ph. F. Reemtsma, 1932. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. 142.Large 4to,,Bound in original deep blue cloth with black lettering. Our copy has several hundred colour, and black-and-white photos, which have been neatly laid down on to their appropriate spaces in the book. Laid-in loose is a photograph of Olympic-class dinghies competing in the 1936 Olympics, which were held in Nazi-controlled Germany. The gilt on the interlocking rings on the front board has been partially rubbed away, and there is a bit of wear to the edges of the boards. A few spots of foxing to the contents. Otherwise, the book is in very good condition. The 1932 Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles, which was the only city to enter a bid for the event. Because of the world depression, barely half of the number of competitors from the previous games, held in Amsterdam, were able to attend. As expected, the United States garnered more than the lion's share of medals, including a gold and silver to the famous woman athlete Babe Didrickson (see pp. 46, 50), and a gold medal to the Polish athlete, Stanislawa Walasiewicz, in the women's 100 metres (see p. 75). After Walasiewicz's death in 1980, it was revealed 'she' was intersexed, and thus was ineligible to compete. Kusuo Kitamura won the gold medal in the men's 1500 metre freestyle swimming event (see p. 65). He was only 14 at the time, and remains the youngest person to ever compete in an Olympics. Ill.: colour, b&w photographs.
