London, Published by the Institution, 1896. 1st edition. Based in London, about three-quarters of its 86,000 current members are located in the United Kingdom. The volume is nicely-bound in half leather over black burckram with the spine in compartments. The morocco spine lable is partially pulled and the binding shows wear but remains strong. The Chemist and Druggist; a Weekly Trade Journal / Volume XXVII January to December, 1885
London, 1885. Leather Bound. pp. iv, 748. Index to contents at beginning of volume. 4to. This volume bound in original 3/4 leather over 'patterned' brown buckram. The binding is in poor condition, there being a split to the rear joint and the spine and the front board being detached. The contents remain tightly-bound, however, showing age-toning and some uneven trimming of the pages when the individual issues were bound up (no loss of text). Portion of p. 81 cut out (to remove ad?). A bound volume of this scarce and interesting trade journal. The Chemist and Druggist journal has been in continuous publication since 1859 and is the leading trade journal for the pharmacy community in Great Britain. Early issues contain a wealth of information for studying the history of medicine, pharmacy, and the pharmaceutical trade worldwide. Reproductions of some individual issues may be ordered form the Wellcome Library, but early original issues of this journal are now quite scarce, and they are the ones which are most interesting containing, as they do, news of various national associations (worldwide), 'wills of deceased chemists', 'personalities', business changes, deaths, legal reports, reviews and literary notes, trade reports, current prices for compounding drugs and chemicals, correspondence, and - perhaps most importantly - a section entitled 'Counter Practice' which gives compounding directions for many different remedies and medicines, plus short articles on the efficacy of certain drugs and formulae. Each of the 25 issues in this volume contains about 30 pages, and each also contains one or two pages of advertisements for drugs and medicines of the period. Truly, a fascinating resource. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.

The Court of Holyrood. An Old Story
Edinburgh, Alexander Macredie, 1825. 3rd edition. Hardcover. pp. 194. 8vo. Bound in original paper-covered boards. The original plain boards are present but partially detached. The paper spine covering is absent. There is a bookplate from Colquhoun's Circulating Library, of Edinburgh, affixed to the inside of the front board. The stitching of the text block is loose but holding. The contents shows some light foxing, but are otherwise unmarked and remain perfectly readable. A poor, to fair, copy. A novel about Mary, Queen of Scots, with a short Preface signed by 'The Authors'. Some uncertainty appears to exist (most apparently amongst book dealers offering for sale copies of this title) as to the dates of publication of the first, second and third editions. Part of this confusion is engendered, no doubt, by the 1826 issue of the Literary Gazette which notes this title as having been 'just published'. In fact, an earlier edition was published in 1822 under the title 'The Court of Holyrood, Fragments of an Old Story.' by Macredie, Skeely, a predecessor of the publisher of the 1825 third edition. There is no easily discernible record of when, or by whom, the first edition was published. What is certain to us is that our copy is designated as the 'Third Edition' and bears the date of 1825 at the foot of the title page. .
