Edinburgh, Scotland, Printed by John Moir, 1802. Wraps. pp. 34. Small 8vo. The original pamphlet, as issued in 1802 in Edinburgh. A pamphlet published since 1744, under varying titles, which offers directions for the culture and management of flax. Also contains a chapter entitled 'A New Method of Cultivating and Preparing Hemp', by Abbe Brulles. The pamphlet concludes with a folding printed document, measuring 33 x 19 cm, dated 1807, detailing the premiums to be offered in Scotland 'for the encouragement of the culture of flax and hemp, and the saving of seed.' The pamphlet is saddle-stitched and lacks the original paper covers, but is otherwise complete. Two erasures marks to title page, causing small abrasions to paper. Small stain to top corner of last half of pamphlet, not affecting text. WorldCat shows only one institutional holding of the 1802 edition, the description of which makes no reference to the folding document. Thirty-five printed pages on untrimmed rag-content paper (now showing some staining but perfectly legible) contained within an old 'scribbler'-style soft cover book which has the oval label of 'Collection / Quaree-Reybourbon / Lille' affixed to the inside blank page. Also laid-in loose is a hand-written card basically summarising the contents, which appear to be reports from 1792 to the various administrative, civil, and military departments 'on the necessary supply of food and munitions for the defense of the place [city]'. Much of the information contained within appears to deal with the aftermath of the French Revolution, when the Austrians laid siege to Lille for eight days in 1792. .

Chicago, IL, N. K. Fairbank Company, 1890. pp. 32. 4to. Bound in original printed stapled card covers. An interesting retail coupon catalogue. The card covers are well-worn and, at some distant point in the past, a mouse nibbled the top right corner. The contents are in quite good condition, with no markings or serious flaws, other than a few corner creases. Apparently, the Fairbank Company, in order to encourage the 19th century consumer to purchase its products, had an arrangement with retail stores to issue coupons upon the purchase of gold dust washing powder, fairy soap, Fairbank's glycerine tar soap, Fairbanl's scouring soap, and cottolene. Customers could redeem these coupons for the items in this catalogue, which displayed quite a wide array of merchandise; from jewelry, silverware and cut glass to books, musical instruments, rifles and pistols, and household goods (samples of which are illustrated in this catalogue).
