Numerous illustrations in the text. Bound in the Japanese style, original half cloth bindings, title leaves on upper boards (two with small loss), gold sprinkled end papers. Bindings rubbed, a few volumes with loss of fabric on upper board.A comprehensive and informative work on Japan at the turn of the 20th century. The volumes are divided into specific topics covering customs, history, festivals, sites, etc. The beautiful photographs are taken by K. Tamamura and the collotype flower plates by Kazumasa Ogawa. (Ref. Bennett p. 18). Frank Brinkley was an Anglo-Irish officer in the Royal Artillery who came to Japan in 1867 and stayed there for more than forty years. He became the owner and editor of the English-language newspaper Japan Mail (Japan Times). Brinkley organised and translated the contributions by Japanese scholars to this work. A few minor marginal tears in a couple of the volumes, otherwise internally in very good condition. A heavy set.

Barnabé Brisson (1531-91), a distinguished French magistrate and politician whose talents won him great reputation. His principal work was a dictionary of Justinian legal terminology "De Verborum quae ad jus civile pertinent significatione" (1559) and he also compiled the first French codification of legislation "le code Henri III". This work was first published in 1590 from the author's notes. The first part deals with the Persian rulers and their history, the second is devoted to religion and social life. First French edition, translated from the original Dutch published in 1714.Cornelis De Brujn born at the Hague in 1652 was a Dutch painter and traveller. He made his first journey in 1674 to the Levant where he stayed for seven years. This work is devoted to his second journey which took him to Russia, Persia, India, Ceylon and Indonesia.His account is devoted to the countries visited, their peoples and customs, culture and natural history. It is mainly recognised for the lovely illustrations made after his drawings. He visited the Samoyedic country, Moscow, Astrakhan, Siberia, Isfahan, Persepolis, Garmeroon, Cochin in India, and Batavia and Bantam in Indonesia. Of particular interest is De Brujn's description of the Samoyedic people, one of the earliest, and the account with illustrations of Persepolis.
