The Gujarâti language belongs to the Indo-Arayan family and derived from Sanskrit through Prakrit and Apabhramsa. It contains two alphabets; the Bâlbodh or Shastri (used for educational purposes) and the Gujarâti (for correspondence and mercantile transactions). William Clarkson was an English protestant missionary who for some years lived in Gujarât. The new types of Gujarâti letters here used were created and produced by the Mission Press at the time. Scarce.

Bound in contemporary blindpressed vellum, spine with four raised bands, small damage to lower part of spine, worn, hinges cracked and clasps missing. The covers are decorated with floral design and images of different saints. Clenardus (1495-1542) was born at Diest in Brabant and became a teacher in Greek and Hebrew in Spain and Portugal. Clenardus' success was largely due to his methodical presentation of the contents and clear formulations of the grammatical rules. Both his Hebrew and Greek grammars became standards and were still used in the 18th century. Index Aurel 141.438; 141.434; 141.418.

. Pp. 231. Contemporary limp vellum. Small wormhole running through margin of first two leaves. This Hebrew grammar was first published in 1529 and reissued many times. Scarce, interesting edition with comments by Quinquarboreus (or Cinquarbres), notes by Isaac and Gilbert Génébrard and amendments by J. Mercerio (Jan Mercer). Clenardus was a Flemish Christian humanist, grammarian, orientalist and professor of Latin at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Clenardus' success was largely due to his methodical presentation of the contents and clear formulations of the grammatical rules. A German translation of "Narrative of a pedestrian journey through Russia and Siberian Tartary..." (London 1824). Captain John Dundas Cochrane was a nephew of the famous Lord Cochrane, and after the peace, being turned down for further naval service, set out on foot to tour the world. The Russian Government gave him travelling facilities and he travelled, mainly by foot, across Siberia to Kamsckatka. This account contains observations from the expeditions of Otto von Kotebue, Vasilieff and Baron Ferdinand Vrangel. Includes descriptions of the native people, their social and economic conditions. Scarce Swedish edition. In 1825 Henry Nelson Coleridge accompanied his uncle, William Hart Coleridge (the bishop of Barbados) to the West Indies. In addition to Barbados they visited Trinidad, Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Martinique, St. Christopher, Antigua, etc. His vivid account was published anonymously the following year. Includes a description of the Madeira Islands from where the journey started. The translation into Swedish was made by C.A. Carlsson, vicar of the Swedish parish in St Barthélemy between 1830 and 1833. He has added many interesting comments to the text. Cf Sabin 14318.

First French edition of Conde's history of the Arab rule in Spain. José Antonio Conde (1766-1820) was educated at the university of Alcalâ and became a member of the Spanish Academy in 1802. This his most important work presents for the first time a complete version of the history of Islamic Spain covering the period from the Arab invasion of Spain in 711 to the expulsion of the latter in 1492. With some annotations in pencil by Allan Uggla. First edition. O'Connor spent thirty years in the service under the Government of India. After a few years in India he served in Tibet (was the first military attaché to Lhasa), and later on in Persia and Nepal. Enclosed to this work: 1. Letter to Allan Uggla from Sven Hedin dated 1922; 2. Letter from Ida to Allan Uggla dated Karakorum 1914; 3. The newspaper "Fars" in Persian dated 1914 with a poem by al-Molk (about the Swedes and Allan Uggla); 4. Postcard adressed to A. Uggla in Shiraz; 5. Letter in French to Ida Uggla (appeal for help of a person being in prison); 6. Thank you letter from Alf Åberg to Claes Uggla. Captain Allan Uggla was in charge of the Swedish gendarmerie in Persia. According to O'Connor: "Captain Uggla, who took over the command during the summer in 1913 made an admirable Commandant - tactful, suave, a good linguist, and a good organiser. He was the man for this difficult post." (pp. 200-01).
