Examples of Maya Pottery in the Museum and Other Collections. Parts I-III [All Published]
Philadelphia, The University Museum, 1943. First edition. Paper portfolio in later card portfolio with ties. Part I: title page, plates list, 25 plates; Part II: note, plates list, 25 plates; Part III: preface, plates list, 16 plates. 66 illustrations. Folio. Comprised of specimens of pottery from Guatemala, Honduras, British Honduras, Yucatan and Chiapas, Mexico, the work was originally projected to comprise four volumes with 25 plates each, however, due to the death of its editor, George Byron Gordon, shortly before the second volume was published, the project remained incomplete, though the co editor, John Alden Mason continued the work through the middle of volume III, with a total of 66 plates. Most of the watercolor illustrations were by artist Mary Louise Baker (1872-1962). British engraver and printer Emery Walker (1851-1933) produced the collotypes, many in color. Provenance: Lee A. Parsons (1932-1966) archeologist and author of The origins of Maya Art. A superb work, and difficult to find complete. Plates about fine, parts wrapper for second part laid in loose, cover for first part affixed to later black portfolio with wear to spine and repairs to folds, two of three original glassine sheets present.

Loi Relative Aux Moyens de Secourir la Colonie de Saint-Domingue. Donnée à Paris, le 29 Juin 1792, L'an IV. De la Liberté. Consignée Dans Les Registres Du Départment de la Meurthe, le 24 Juillet Suivant. [No. 1412]
Nancy [France], Chez Haener, Imprimeur du Départment de la Meurthe, 1792. First edition. Self wrappers. 4 pp. Illus. with a woodcut headpiece. Sm. 4to. Signed (illegible). Law authorizing negotiation with the United States minister to obtain food and construction materials in the amount of 4,000,000 livres, to be paid by the French Treasury but to be reimbursed by taxes on the colony. The money was much needed as the loan decree, dated 26 Juin 1792, came in the midst of unparalleled upheaval in Haiti. The revolution of the year before, with its "horrible carnage" had now given way "to strategic military operations, tactical maneuvers and new political alliances as the slaves gain territory and stabilize their positions. They raid plantations for military equipment, loot the whites' forces after they are repelled, and trade with the Spanish for weaponry" (Kona Shen, History of Haiti, The Revolution Builds, Brown University. library.brown.edu/haitihistory/6.html). Toussaint Louverture is a rising star, Civil Commissions arrive from France, free blacks and mulattos in Saint-Domingue are granted equal political rights, Spain declares war on England and France, and battle ensues for control of Haiti. The U.S. is concerned with conditions on the island and in fact Jefferson writes of his concern to the Marquis de Lafayette (16 June 1792). Rare. OCLC, BN France, and other European Libraries locate no copies of this issue (No. 1412, with additional text concerning the Departement de la Meurthe). A Paris printing (No. 1813) can be found at Cornell, Univ. Minn. and JCB which also has a Toulouse printing. Manioc (Bibliotheque) shows a digitized version of the Paris imprint. A very good copy with pin holes along inner margin, two soiled spots, signed in ink on last page.

[Hamilton, Alexander]. Cooper, Charles D., [Autograph] Signed Check of Charles D. Cooper, the New York Politician Who Spurred the Hamitlon-Burr Rivalry to Its Fateful Conclusion by His Published Letter
[Hamilton, Alexander]. Cooper, Charles D.
[Autograph] Signed Check of Charles D. Cooper, the New York Politician Who Spurred the Hamitlon-Burr Rivalry to Its Fateful Conclusion by His Published Letter
Albany, 1830. 1 sheet. 6 x 3 inches. Dated December 11, 1830, for the amount of 53 dollars and 40 cents. Charles Dekay Cooper (1769-1831) was a New York politician, who in February 1804, wrote a letter to Philip Schuyler (Hamilton's father-in-law) detailing Hamilton's scathing remarks made against Burr at a dinner party Cooper attended. This letter was then published in the Albany Register. On June 18th 1804, Burr called Hamilton's attention to Cooper's newspaper article containing this expression: "I (Cooper), could detail a still more despicable opinion which General Hamilton has expressed of Mr. Burr." Burr in his letter reminded Hamilton that "he must perceive the necessity of a prompt unqualified acknowledgment or denial of the use of these expressions." Considerable correspondence then followed between the two, but to no effect. Burr then sent a peremptory challenge to Hamilton, which being as promptly accepted, they met upon the Jersey shore in the early morning of the 12th of July, 1804. It ended in the death of Hamilton. Provenance: John Pierce, who was part owner of Pierce and Scopes, booksellers located at 59 Maiden Lane Albany, NY, who dealt in historical manuscripts among other items. Very good, closed tear through contents, remnant of paperclip, tear along edge, none affecting legibility.
