Kellerman, Regina M., ed
The Architecture of the Greenwich Village Waterfront. An Archival Research Study
New York, New York University Press, 1098. First edition. Photo-illustrated paper wrappers. v, [1], 138 pp. Folio. 12 x 9 inches. Undertaken for The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. "Most people think that New York City's historic Greenwich Village is totally protected under law as a Historic District. It is not. Inexplicably left out of the designated District and in real jeopardy today for lack of preservation and planning safeguards is the adjoining Village waterfront. This surviving neighborhood of mixed use with its preponderance of nineteenth and turn-of-the-century buildings, its low skyline and open vistas to the sea, extends along the Hudson River from West Houston to West Fourteenth Streets," rear cover. Weimar, Verlegt von dem Gebr. Hoffmann, 1821. First edition. Contemporary three quarter calf over marbled boards, titled in gilt. [6], xviii, [4], 91, [6], 96-168; 176; 240, [1] pp. Illus. with 20 copper-engraved, aquatint plates (19 boldly colored on thick wove paper, 4 are double-page, one with tissue guard), 6 copper-engraved maps (5 folding), and 2 folding tables. 4to. All but one image highly and brightly colored. Subscriber list inserted after the preliminaries in Vol. 1 as in the Peabody-Essex copy. "This second Russian expedition into the Pacific for scientific exploration, sponsored by Count Romanzoff, was commanded by Lieutenant Kotzebue, and also included the famous artist Ludovik Choris. Kotzebue, second son of the famous German dramatist August von Kotzebue, had earlier sailed with Captain Kruzenshtern in the first Russian circumnavigation, 1803-06. Leaving Kronstadt in 1815, the Rurlk rounded Cape Horn and visited Chile, Easter Island, and the Marshall Islands. Kotzebue explored the North American coast and Hawaii and searched unsuccessfully for a passage to the Arctic Ocean. The description of the northwest coast of America is a most important contribution. The second volume contains a description of California and the earliest scientific account of the Golden Poppy, California's state flower. In California Kotzebue also picked up Vassili Petrovich Tarakanov, a Russian hunter who had been captured by the Californians. Kotzebue's account of his ship's visit to San Francisco Bay in October of 1816 Is accompanied by six plates. The abridged narrative of the naturalist Adelbert von Chamisso in the third volume is important for his descriptions and remarks on the climate, flora, fauna, and peoples of California and the northwest coast of America." Hill p. 333. "A celebrated narrative important for its descriptions of Alaska, California, Hawaii, and Micronesia.. The narrative is one of the significant early accounts of California.. The Rurik made two important visits to Hawaii, and the Hawaiian portion of the text is extensive with important observations on life and customs during the reign of Kamehameha I, whose famous ‘red vest' portrait by Choris is one of the illustrations," Forbes: Hawaiian National Bibliography, v.1 p 359). Lada-Mocarski notes in her Bibliography: 'This edition—all 3 variants—is in many ways superior to the subsequent editions, including the English translation (London, 1821). The three volumes are rich in early original source material on Alaska. The third volume is very important as it has considerable scientific data, comparative vocabulary of native languages..The colored plates of butterflies were not included in the Russian or English translations." (Bibliography of Books on Alaska published before 1868, pp. 288-9). Eighty-eight copies were produced on fine "Velinpapier" with the plates finely handcolored; another issue with the plates colored, but mostly in sepia; and an issue on regular handmade paper, of which a limited number of copies have colored plates. Provenance: On the front pastedown, leather bookplate of Christian Friedrich von Schrickell (1762-1835) of Görlitz, former owner of Rothenburg which burnt down in 1798. Frau von Schrickel is listed as a subscriber from Görlitz for one copy of Examplare 3. Sabin 38284. Cowan 1933, page 334. Hill 943. Arctic Bibliography 9189. Borba de Moraes I: 438. Forbes 1:525. [Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. Westward Expansion]
[Als] the Beauties of Frontier Fond Du Lac Wisconsin Described by Byron Murray Hanks, Newly Minted Lawyer & Settler
Fond du Lac, [WI], 1852. [4] pp. Bifolium. 7.75 x 10 inches. Wonderful letter describing the scene at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin just as the railroad arrived, by a recently married settler from New York, Byron Murray Hanks, 26 years old, Dartmouth College graduate, newly minted lawyer, and former engineer on the Genesee Valley canal and Erie canal who arrived with his wife, the former Mandana Ann Sherman of Henrietta , N.Y. to open a law practice between February 1852 and the time of this letter, May 30th, 1852, to his brother and sister, signed B.M. Hanks. His description is of a bustling, expanding frontier community, "There are 6 or 7 meeting houses in the place of various denominations. The Baptists raised a frame last Thursday on the street where I have bought me a lot." His own congregation house "was not plastered, but the Masons will go at it tomorrow, and it will be completed in a short time." Of the lot he purchased "the ground was all ploughed and ready for the gardens. Now my corn, peas, brans, beets, melons, squashes, etc, are all up, looking as nice & as smart as anything green possibly can. The city has a quantity of good fountain water, soft and sweet. The inhabitants enjoy the best of health. It costs nothing for the pasturing of cows, as they now on the prairie. You might count 2 or 3 hundred of them in a drove, in the prairie, east of the city" He notes that the general expectation is that the city's population would increase from 3,000 inhabitants to 10,000 within the decade, and further describes the good fortune of "Old Doctor Darling", who arrived in Fond du Lac seven years earlier, and whose property was now worth $100,000. Hanks left the practice of law a year later for railroad work, and finally returned to Rochester New York and took up the law again in 1855. See Chapman: Sketches of the Alumni of Dartmouth College, (Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1869) p. 379. Very good, worn along folds.

[War of 1812. Connecticut. Law], [Manuscript Document Signed] [Court Martial of Thomas Bevins] State of Connecticut. General Orders March 24th 1814
[War of 1812. Connecticut. Law]
[Manuscript Document Signed] [Court Martial of Thomas Bevins] State of Connecticut. General Orders March 24th 1814
Connecticut, 1814. [2] pp. Bifolium with integral address. 7.25 x 11.75 inches. The orders to publish the court martial verdict of Thomas Bevins, an extremely important case involving the free speech of citizen soldiers. A True copy of a General Court Martial, "presided by Abel Rossiter in New Haven in trial of Thomas Bevins.. charged with offering personal abuse to the Capt. of said fourth company at Regimental meeting of officers on August 31 [1813]".. found guilty of "ungentlemanly & unofficiallike conduct"..sentenced to be cashiered." As Chris Bray notes in his: "Court-Martial: How Military Justice Has Shaped America from the Revolution to 9/11 and Beyond" (New York: Norton & Company, 2016), the issues raised in this court martial were central to the conflict between citizens' rights and military control. "Thomas Bevins didn't deny the accusation.. But it didn't matter, he added, because he wasn't a military officer when he spoke. 'I distinctly admit,' Bevins told his Connecticut court-martial, 'that in the evening of the 31st of August named after the officers were dismissed I did say in answer to Capt Isaac Beach's remark to me that I was a d-d Irish buggar—that he was not fit to command a company any more than my dog. If this be abuse of Capt Isaac Beach I have abused him. But I beg leave to remark that this was in the evening after we were dismissed, + when as men + gentlemen, we were on the same footing.' Who are you, and when? If, in a society that intends to defend itself with a militia, every farmer and clerk and merchant is an occasional member of the armed forces, then when does the man set aside his identity as a citizen and take on his identity as a soldier? More important, when does he not? On that August day in 1814, Ens. Thomas Bevins trained all day under Capt. Isaac Beach; then the militia was dismissed and they sat down to dinner together, and they began to trade insults. But who was trading those insults—Captain Beach and Ensign Bevins, or Mr. Beach and Mr. Bevins? An important implication follows, and it was one that militiamen constantly contested: Who can punish you, and for what, and when do they have the power do it?" The document is then signed by Brig. Maj. R. T. Ingersoll, and then addressed to Captain Oliver Clark by Truman Coe, adjt. 32nd Reg. ordering Clark to "publish them to the company under your command on or before the Annual Training in May next." Dated April 26, 1814, with integral address noted "In haste" to Captain Oliver Clark, of Millford. Provenance:"From the Historical Collection of Raymond F. Yates / Lockport, NY" stamp. Yates (1895-1966) was an author and the first President of the Niagara County Historical Society. Very good, light tearing around folds, slightly obsuring text, some very minor repairs to tears from opening of seal, contents browned and lightly soiled, owner stamp to bottom edge of blank.

Madrid, Antonio Balbas, 1756. Segunda edicion. Full contemporary vellum with manuscript titles on spines, ties. [6], 299; [3], 298; [3], 302; [2], 364 leaves. Illus. with title page vignettes of the royal coat of arms of Charles II by Juan de la Peña. Folio. "Initiated by order of the Council of the Indies in 1624, [Recopilacion de leyes de los reynos de las Indias] tried to systematize laws promulgated since Columbus's exploration of the New World. Antonio de León Pinelo was the principal author of the work, but Juan de Solórzano Pereira's contribution in settling the final form of the collection also deserves recognition. The draft was completed in 1636, but several successive financial crises prevented its publication for decades. Finally, 3,300 copies were printed in 1681. In addition to organizing more than eleven thousand laws for imperial officials, the Recopilación, in D. A. Brading's words, 'demonstrated the justice and legitimacy of Spanish rule in the New World'." "The Recopilación consists of nine parts (libros) which ordered legislation related to the following major topics: the church, clerics, educational institutions, and publishing (I); councils, audiencias, and related staff associated with the provision of justice (II); viceroys, presidents, the military, and lesser offices (III); discovery, conquest, settlement, local government and services, and mines and commerce (IV); district administration, the supervision of the medical profession, judicial procedures, residencias (V); the native population and its treatment and financial and labor obligations, encomiendas and repartimientos (VI); special investigations, the black and mulatto population, jails and judicial sentences (VII); taxes and their collection, the sale of offices, treasury and accounting offices and their responsibilities (VIII); the House of Trade, oversight of trade to and from the Indies, naval personnel, travel and travelers to and from the Indies, the merchant guilds of Mexico City and Lima (IX). Fortunately, the Recopilación contains a detailed index." "Described by Clarence H. Haring as 'one of the most humane, and one of the most comprehensive, codes published for any colonial empire,' the Recopilación contains legislation that illuminates much of the colonies' institutional structure and procedure. Nearly all of its prescriptions should, however, be read as statements of good intentions rather than actual statutes that were enforced." (Mark Burkholder in "Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture," New York: Scribner's, 1996: Vol. 4, pp. 545-5). This second edition appeared in 1756 and was followed by three more: 1774, 1794, and the fifth and last, in 1841. Sabin 68387. Palau 137462 & 252517. Medina BHA 3763. See Brunet IV, col. 1138. American Manufactures. An Adjourned Meeting of the Citizens of the City of Philadelphia, Friendly to American Manufactures Was Held in the County Court House, on Saturday the 2d of October, 1819
Philadelphia, n.p. 1819. First edition. Self wrappers. 8 pp. 8vo. The report contains the committee's findings on Philadelphia manufactures in 1814, 1816, and 1819 which notes its importance: "Although they made report in part, on the 4th ult. containing a statement of the situation of seventeen branches, they judge it proper to present their fellow citizens with a connected view of the whole together ; so as to enable them to form a correct estimate on a subject of immense importance not merely to the welfare of this community, but to the wealth, power, and resources of our common country ; which never can be really independent, while it continues to buy more than it sells — paralizes the industry of its citizens, neglects its domestic manufactures, and supports those of foreign nations." [Photograph] Souvenir of World Famous Mt. Lowe: America's Greatest Scenic Trip
[Mt. Lowe, CA], 1899. Ruled card mount. Image: 4 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches mounted on 7 x 10 inch multi-ruled mount. Silver gelatin print taken at the top of the Great Incline on Echo mountain with a large group of travelers at the side and in the elegant opera-box cars known as the White Chariots. Charles Lawrence, the official photographer, took pictures of the visitors, which could be purchased for 25 cents (and included the entire car, as he took the photos from a special scaffold). The Mount Lowe Railway opened on 4 July 1893, and consisted of nearly seven miles of track starting in Altadena, California (Mountain Junction)..The railway climbed the steep Lake Avenue and crossed the Poppy fields into the Rubio Canyon. This part of the trip was called the Mountain Division. At this juncture stood the Rubio Pavilion, a small 12-room hotel. From there the passengers transferred to a cable car funicular which climbed the Great Incline to the top of the Echo Mountain promontory The Incline powering mechanism was designed by San Francisco cable car inventor Andrew Smith Hallidie. It boasted grades as steep as 62% and as slight as 48%, and gained 1,900 feet (580 m) in elevation. The funicular was the first of its kind built with three rails and featuring a four-railed passing track at the half way point (See Charles Seims: "Mount Lowe, The Railway in the Clouds," p.33-46). The verso of the card contains the basic facts of Mt. Lowe bordered by illustrations. A very good sharp copy with minor soiling on the mount.

[Italian Risorgimento].[Leopardi, Monaldo], Catechismo Sulle Rivoluzioni
[Italian Risorgimento].[Leopardi, Monaldo]
Catechismo Sulle Rivoluzioni
[n.a.], [n.a.], 1832. Stitched self wrappers. 40 pp. 16mo. "Q. Does God's holy law permit rebelliousness against one's temporal Sovereign? R. Never, indeed, condemns it highly; for the sacred writing which, as you know, is the very word of God, declares that the High Official (Podesta) does not come from God, but whoever resists him, resists precisely the ordination of God, and thus proceeds to damnation." Thus begins Count Monaldo Leopardi's (1776-1847) counter-revolutionary Catechism on Revolutions, arguing that Christianity and the French Revolution are incompatible, that the rebellion is an ignominious revolt against the metaphysical and social order established by God, and that tradition is more important that abstract concepts of liberalism. Meant for use in schools, it was one of two essays published by Leopardi in 1832. Two editions were published in 1832 both rather uncommon. This edition without date and publisher (but which Sorbelli's "Opuscoli stampe alla macchia e fogli volanti riflettenti il pensiero politico italiano: [1830-1835" dates as 1832) is held by only two libraries: Univ. Conn. and Biblioteca Casanatense. Very good, lightly browned, a few lower fore edge corners folded, tiny marginal chip at leaf 16, and one closed tear on rear leaf, numeral inked on title, original stitching but perhaps removed from a later volume.

Lewis, John Vaughn, [Archive] Four Letters from the Rector of St. John's Parish, Chronicling His Temporary Breakdown and Resignation
Lewis, John Vaughn
[Archive] Four Letters from the Rector of St. John's Parish, Chronicling His Temporary Breakdown and Resignation
Washington, DC, 1880. 7 pp. on 3 sheets & 1 Bifolium. Four letters, spanning two years, from John Vaughn Lewis (1836-1911) the rector of St. John's Parish (St. John's Episcopalian Church) in Washington D.C. one of the best known churches in the nation's capital, to his colleague Mortimer Jefferis, beginning with the hiring of Jefferis, and through to the aftermath of the resignation of Lewis, from St. John's. In the first letter, dated October 15, 1878, Lewis offers Jefferis forty dollars a week to come work at St. John's, "..to maintain the Daily Service, to assist on Sundays, &.. superintend the Sunday School." In the second letter, dated January 30th, 1879, Lewis does not address Jefferis (nor anyone else), rather he names Jefferis as his representative, and authorizes Jefferis to act on his behalf. The third, written on St. John's stationary, but from the Convent of St. Paul, is dated 1879, and informs Jefferis of his resignation from St. John's. He tells Jefferis that he ".. and Jim Clark must take care of things, somehow. You need not come see me, I am 'played out'". The last letter, dated May 14, 1880, is the only letter not written on St. John's stationary, and comes from Burlington, NJ. By this time, Jefferis too, had left St. John's, as this letter was addressed to him in Dresden, Germany. In this letter, Lewis takes the opportunity to explain his decision to leave St. John's, claiming that his resignation was "fore-ordained", as they had not only reduced his salary and spending allowance, but they had knowingly "upset" his choir by making it a mixed quartet. Moreover, they had accused him of intemperance, to which he had replied, "'"Gentlemen, I know perfectly well how I use liquor and why. I could defy your charge in any court..'". He then shares with Jefferis his prospects for the future, entertaining the possibility of leaving Parish life, and working instead, in academia. He would however remain with Parish life, becoming rector at a number of churches after 1880. Very good, remnants and punctures to top edges of few letters, small tears along folds, not affecting text, minor browning.
