[American Revolution] [West Indies], [Battle of Martinique... Combat de la Dominique Reported in] the London Gazette Extraordinary. Thursday, May 25, 1780
[American Revolution] [West Indies]
[Battle of Martinique... Combat de la Dominique Reported in] the London Gazette Extraordinary. Thursday, May 25, 1780
[London], Thomas Harrison, 1780. First edition. Removed. [3 pp.]. Sm. 4to. The first British report of the April 17th, 1780 naval battle near Martinique, West Indies between the British forces, including 20 ships of the line, led by Sir George Rodney and the French Squadron, with 23 ships of the line, led by Comte de Guichen. 470 were killed, 860 wounded, and a number of ships badly damaged. The French plans to attack and seize Jamaica did not succeed, but they did manage to avert a disaster and turn the battle into a draw, though you might not be able to tell that from the British report attributed to Captain Samuel Uvedale of the Ajax, whom Rodney had dispatched with the news of his victory. "The reality was much different, and deprived of what he had expected to be a glorious victory Rodney vented his wrath upon his subordinates whilst saving praise only for Captains Bowyer, Young, Molloy, Houlton and Douglas who received certificates commending their actions. Such was the veracity of his dispatch home, including comments to the effect that ‘the British flag was not supported' that the first lord of the Admiralty, Lord Sandwich, felt constrained to edit parts before releasing it to the public in England" (Richard Hiscocks: The Battle of Martinique -17 April 1780 at "MoreThanNelson). In addition to the description, includes a list of the line of battle and the names of killed and wounded officers. Very good, with minor wear to edges and margins, partial inked stamp on corner.

[Theater. Collecting] Ireland, Joseph Norton, [Small Archive] Three Letters from Joseph Norton Ireland, Offering to Sell His Collection to Fellow Theater Historian, Douglas Taylor
[Theater. Collecting] Ireland, Joseph Norton
[Small Archive] Three Letters from Joseph Norton Ireland, Offering to Sell His Collection to Fellow Theater Historian, Douglas Taylor
Bridgeport [CT], 1898. 4 pp. 5 x 8 inches. Three letters from theater historian and biographer, Joseph Norton Ireland to collector and biographer, Douglas Taylor . 1. Letter, dated December 8th, 1897. 1 pp. Ireland tells Taylor of the decline in his physical and mental faculties, before he summarizes his collection, which includes the Treasurer's books of the Old Park Theater, portraits & photographs of performers, and bound sets of playbills. Finally, he offers a nearly complete set of John Boydell's Shakespeare engravings for the amount of $40. 2. Letter, dated December 16th, 1897. 2 pp.Taylor clearly wanted the Boydell engravings, as Ireland's second letter was sent with an enclosed return check to Taylor, who had overpaid for the set. "I return your check for $40, as I think you misunderstand my writing 'I would see all for that amount', I then referred to the Shakespeare engravings, which were at the close of my letter, the small ones and the large ones and I meant to say I would sell them all (large & small) for that amount. I think the whole collection is worth rather more than that." 3. Letter, dated March 4th, 1898. 1 pp. Contains a short list of Ireland's collection of autograph letters, all bound, which he suspects "will be of little use" to Taylor. Ioseph Norton Ireland (1817-1898) wrote "Records of the New York Stage from 1750-1860 (1866); "Mrs. Duff" (1882); and "A memoir of the professional life of Thomas Abthorpe Cooper" (1888). Douglas Taylor (1830-1913) was president of the Dunlap Society, whose own biographical works included "Autobiography of Clara Fisher Maeder" (1897) and "Autobiographical sketch of Mrs. John Drew" (1899). Very good, indents and remnants of paperclips along top edges, minor soling to folds on versos, contents clean.

[Jackson, Andrew] Snowden, William, [Als] Political Letter to Duff Green, Newspaper Publisher, About Andrew Jackson and the Success of the Hickory Clubs
[Jackson, Andrew] Snowden, William
[Als] Political Letter to Duff Green, Newspaper Publisher, About Andrew Jackson and the Success of the Hickory Clubs
Pittsburgh, [PA], 1828. [3] pp. Bifolium. with integral address. 7.5 x 12 inches. A wonderful and lengthy political letter from William Snowden, Jackson supporter and son of Pittsburgh Mayor John Maugridge Snowden, to Gen. Duff Green in Washington, owner and editor of the United States Telegraph, a pro-Jackson paper. Snowden discusses the political climate in Pittsburgh and the great success of the Hickory Clubs, the pro-Jackson political organization that would change the course of American electoral campaigns. Contrary to his initial suspicion, Snowden had recently come to believe that there were many Jacksonians in his midst. "We are going on handsomely here. Hickory Clubs are being organized thro' the whole county as well as in the City. These clubs form so many points round which the friends of Jackson may rally in the respective districts and concentrate their forces.. At the meeting of the Hickory Club for the West Ward of the City a committee was appointed to ascertain the number of votes in the Ward friendly to the good cause and to report their names to the Club. This duty was performed. Out of 800 qualified voters in the Ward the committee reported the names of 603 persons favorable to Jackson. I give you this fact for your private information, not for publication. The Club for the East Ward appointed a committee for a similar purpose." Snowden proceeds to elaborate on a meeting held at the Court House, "to discuss the provisions of the proposed Tariffs and the amendment of Mr. Mallory. The meeting was called at 11 o'clock in the morning on a market day when the friends of Jackson who are principally mechanics, manufacturers, and shopkeepers could not attend." Despite the sinister intentions of the opposition, Snowden surmised that the meeting did no harm to their cause, insisting that "The new Tariff is popular with us." Signed and dated Pittsburgh, March 14, '28, Wm, Snowden. William Snowden (ca. 1805- after 1829) was a frequent correspondent of Green (see Green's letter books). He had accompanied Jackson to Washington after his visit to Pittsburgh and having studied law, was looking for a clerkship in Washington. His father's letter to Jackson describes him as possessing "a good address, some talents and is a young man of steady habits." After 1829 there are no further references to him, except a note that he died young, which must most likely have been the case since he does not show up among any Jackson appointments despite his recommendation by his father and his friendship with Green. (Centennial Volume of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, PA. 1784-1884, First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Wm. G. Johnston & Co. Printers, pp. 203). Duff Green (1791-1875) bought the Telegraph in 1826, using it as a platform to support Jackson, and later became a member of Jackson's Kitchen Cabinet though they had a falling out when Green used the Telegraph to openly support Calhoun in his dispute with Jackson. Very good, extremities worn, seal torn, affecting a few words, light soiling and dampstaining, contents clean otherwise.

Jacobi, F.H. [Friedrich Heinrich], [Als] Friedrich Jacobi Arranges for a Visit with Heinrich Wilhelm Von Gerstenberg
Jacobi, F.H. [Friedrich Heinrich]
[Als] Friedrich Jacobi Arranges for a Visit with Heinrich Wilhelm Von Gerstenberg
Windsbach, Germany, 1797. [1 pp.] bifolium. with integral address. 7.5 x 9 inches. Rare signed letter by German philosopher & influential literary figure Friedrich Jacobi (1743-1819) who was known for his critical views of the more liberal philosophies of the day, including Enlightenment and Transcendental Idealism, as well as of the Sturm and Drang literary movement He "was an outspoken critic, first of the rationalism of German late Enlightenment philosophy, then of Kant's Transcendental Idealism, especially in the form that the early Fichte gave to it, and finally of the Romantic Idealism of the late Schelling. In all cases, his opposition to the philosophers was based on his belief that their passion for explanation unwittingly led them to confuse conditions of conceptualization with conditions of existence, thereby denying all room for individual freedom or for a personal God..But perhaps the most influential of Jacobi's formulas was the claim that there is no ‘I' without a ‘Thou', and that the two can recognize and respect one another only in the presence of a transcendent and personal God. (di Giovanni, George and Paolo Livieri, "Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Summer 2020 Edition). In this letter dated July 12th, 1797, Jacobi was attempting to set up a visit to German poet and critic, Heinrich Wilhelm von Gerstenberg in Altona, and wrote in part "I will orally tell you, dear excellency, how I have lived here in the castle for three weeks in a kind of captivity; also how I wanted last Friday to announce to you and your wife that my sister and I would call the following afternoon and was prevented from doing so. Now, we would like to call tomorrow afternoon. Should this not be convenient for you, please write me a line addressed at Kerthos the bookseller's.. " Heinrich Wilhelm von Gerstenberg (1737-1823) was a German poet and critic who did much to support the Sturm und Drang movement but who at the time of this letter was much more involved in Kantian philosophy. Very good, folded, faint soiling, seal intact with opening repaired.
