Paris, Duprat, 1801. W. 4 fold. pls. Recent half green cloth. (VIII, 188, IV (Bookseller's cat.) pp.). DSB III, 70/9: 'The service that geometry might render to analysis lay mainly through the study of correlation of figures, and that in turn exhibits a certain congruence with his point of view in the mechanics of machine processes. Its subject matter is the comparison of geometric systems in various states that evolve into each other.': Pogg. I, 381: Coolidge, 92: Introduction of negative quantities in projective geometry.: Roberts / Trent, p.60/1: 'Carnot did pioneering studies of machine design and made contributions to mathematics, mechanics, and military strategy. He was a member of numerous commissions on machine technology....(Fulton's steamboat; Combustion engine etc.).':

CARNOT, L.N.M.
Principes fondamentaux de l'equilibre et du mouvement;
Paris, De l'imprimerie de Crapelet. Chez Deterville libraire, rue du Battoir, no 16, quartier de S. André. An XI - 1803. 8vo. W. 2 fold. engr. pls. (Signed 'Cloquet sculp.'), with 24 figs. In contemporary brds., with red spine label (Reimboittage). (XXII, 262, I (errata), I (Blank) pp. (A small tear (4 cm) in half title). DSB III, p. 70 - 79: Lazare-Nicolas-Marguerite Carnot, 1753 - 1823, mechanics, mathematics, engineering. 'The "Essai sur les machines en général" of 1783 contains all the elements of his engineering mechanics, in which subject it was the first truly theoretical treatise. It attracted no detectable attention prior to the revision he published in 1803 under the title "Principes fondamenteaux" ... which treats the science of machines in terms of geometric motions. For it is extremely interesting that it was in this that he thought to unify his geometric and mechanical interests.': D'Ocagne, Histoire des Mathématiques, p. 198: Dugas, p. 309: Roberts/Trent, Bibl. Mechanica, p. 63: 'First published at Dijon in 1782 (=1783) as "Essai sur les Machines", this new edition incorporates recent developments in the field. In the preface Carnot makes reference to Lagrange's invention of the calculus of variations and the law of least action.': A very good copy.

Van den Bosch was a prolific author, well versed in Greek, Latin, English, French, Spanish and Italian, which allowed him to translate a wide variety of publications. Many of these works have become rare, not all of them are worthwhile. Van den Bosch tried his hand at poetry, prose, historical pieces, drama etc. Mostly it seems pot boilers.
