BOUTENS, P.C..- SONNETTEN.- Opdrachtexemplaar [door?] van Duijvenbode
Sonnetten.
Amsterdam, Bij P.N. van Kampen & Zoon, 1920. 4to. [15.5 x 21. 5 cm. In oorspronkelijke papieren omslag, voorzijde en rug bedrukt. (38 bladen). (Beperkte oplage van 15 exx.). Zeldzaam 'opdrachtexemplaar'.

Fulton pp. 50 - 52, specif. item 71: 'In discussing cold, Boyle gives an account of his discovery of 'freezing mixtures' with the present-day interpretation of the phenomenon. He proved that ice has a smaller specific gravity than water and that it must therefore expand on freezing. The work is noteworthy also for a large number of physiological observations ... he was aware that extreme cold prevented the putrefaction of animial tissues, and realized that cold could be utilized for the preservation of meat.': Wing B3997: The second edition being equally important as the first 8vo edition of 1665 [of which many copies were destroyed in the Great Fire of London). The 29 pp. at the end contain Boyle's notes of the effects of cold on the [Hudson Bay Company's ] Captains and officers in cold climates, Boyle became an adventurer in this company in 1675 in order to collect this information. Boyle's publication is a milestones in the history of chemistry, since it uses a quantitative tool [a graduated thermometer] to study the interactions and chemical substances and mixtures. Boyle gives accounts of 2 kinds of death from the cold and many observations on the action of cold on different substances: Neville, vol. I, pp. 202 - 203: Partington vol. II, pp. 509 - 510:

BRAAM-HOUCKGEEST, A.E. Van
Tome Premier [Tome Second].
Paris, Chez Garnery, Libraire, rue Serpente, n. 17. A Strasbourg, chez Levrault, Libraire, 1798. An 6 De La République [1798]. 8vo. [150 x 80 mm]. In 2 vols. In the contemporary lightcolored paper covers, spine material partially gone, but 70% preserved. Vol. I: [n2, a8,b8, A-Y8]. (IV, XXXII, 1-351), I (blank) pp. Vol. 2: [n2, A-R8, S7 (without S8 blank)]. (IV, 286 pp.). (Uncut copy; nice wide blank margins.). (In vol. 2, leaf Q1 a corner missing, w. loss of 2 or 3 words.). Very nice original condition, text on good quality paper. As is well known the original edition of Braam Houckgeest narrative of the Embassy of the Dutch to the Emperor of China, an Embassy which was led by the famous Dutch physician, philosopher, orientalist, collector and VOC 'Opperhoofd' Isaac Titsingh was published in Philadelphia in 2 vols. in the years 1797-1798 [we draw your attention to the publications of Dr. Frank Lequin, who has been studying the life and achievements of Titsingh for 30 years, resulting in a number of excellent books: I. Isaac Titsingh (1745 - 1812) [the biography]. 2. A la recherche du Cabinet Titsingh. [the art collection] 3. Isaac Titsingh in China. [the Embassy Journal]. 4. The VOC personnel. A new edition of his thesis. 2005]: Henze vol. I, 334: Monglond IV, 181: Lust 504: Cordier, Bibl. S. 2350: Landwehr, VOC, item 547 (original ed) & 548 'Pirate edition in 8vo...': Cat. NHSM, vol. I, pp. 508, 509 (Or. ed. & Dutch translation): Tiele, comp. 182 (Dutch transl.).: Walravens, 'China Illustrata' pp. 162 - 165: ['Reise der Gesandtschaft...'] An extensive discussion of the original work, the reprints in French, English, German and Dutch (in this order) and Braam's personal background and his reason for joining the Embassy.: The account from Titsingh's point of view in Lequin's 'Isaac Titsingh in China (1794 - 1796). Het onuitgegeven Journaal van zijn Ambassade naar Peking, i.l.c.: Titsingh's Journal, published for the first time in 2005, is based on an autograph discovered by Frank Lequin in 1989 in the Centre d'Archives d'Outre Mer, in combination with the author's corrected copy from the University Library in Leiden. The Titsingh Journal is of the utmost importance because it provides the view of the first in command during the embassy to Emperor Qianlong. Braam van Houckgeest was second in command and would assume command in the event of Titisingh's death. Braam's original 2 volume Philadelphia account, which is very rare, is an important source for the knowledge we have of China at the close of the eighteenth century. With Titsingh as Envoy, Braam van Houckgeest as vice envoy, a third member of the Embassy was the frenchman De Guignes Jr. He also wrote an account of the embassy which was published in 1808, accompanied by an extremely rare and beautiful atlas. It is important to notice that the 2 vol. pirate edition here offered, published by Garnery in Paris in 1798, contains material from the first volume only of the original edition [Philadelphia 1797 -98], describing the journal to Peking from April 2, 1794 to April 4, 1795.: Loehr, G., Braam van Houckgeest, the first American at the court of China. (Princeton Un. Libr. Chronicle, 15, 1954 pp. 179 - 193: Duyvendak, J.J.L., T'oung Pao, 34 & 35, (1938 - 1940), pp. 1 - 137; pp. 329 - 353: See also the extensive entry 700 [1st edition Philadelphia] in vol. II of the Löwendahl-von der Burg collection 'China Illustrata Nova' [2008]:
