A very good copy of this 'Life' of Saint Ignace by one of the Societas Jesu's best known disciples and missionaries, Dominique Bouhours. Bouhours was also responsible for the authoritative biography of Franciscus Xaverius, named "The Apostle of the Indies", which was published in Paris in 1682. Encycl. Brit. (11th ed., 1911) vol. 17/18, pp. 80 - 84: Loyola, St Ignatius of (1491 - 1556) founder of the Society of Jesus. Also vol. 15/16 under Jesuits. 'This society may be defined, in its original conception and well-avowed object, as a body of highly trained religious men of various degrees, bound by the three personal vows of pverty, chastity and obedience, together with, in some cases, a special vow to the Pope's service, with the object of labouring for the spiritual good of themselves and their neighbours. ... They are governed and live by constitutions and rules, mostly drawn up by their founder, St Ignatius of Loyola...'.: Following page 483 an extensive index referring a.o. to founding, origin and governing of the S.J., the role of Franciscus Xaverius (pp 124, 204, 209, 325, 424, also his mission to the Indies), Jean Pascal, Nicolas Bobadilla, Robert Bellarmin, etc. A very detailed biography.
