Originally published in 1874, without illustrations, historian John Richard Green began work in 1869, having been given a diagnosis of six months to live. Intended to be an account 'not of English Kings or English Conquests, but of the English People', Green was criticised at the time for the omission of major historical events such as battles.Illustrated with thirteen colour plates, included maps, to volume I. With nine plates to volume II, eight of which are in colour. Volume III illustrated with a folding colour frontispiece and five plates. Volume IV illustrated with three colour maps and one folding plate.Collated, complete, but with one plate detached and loosely inserted to volume IV, and lacking part of the folding plate to volume IV.With the armorial bookplate of Ernest A Taylor to each front pastedown, alongside the binder's label of G. An early edition of this important treatise discussing education, family, and social life. In the original Italian.Register runs as a2-a7, b8, c4, A-Qq8, Rr4. Paginated to the recto only. This work is an important source for the ideals of etiquette in sixteenth century Europe, touching on the standard for manners, proper behaviour, and the duties of courtiers. The text is formed of a dialogue at a banquet between two parties, Hannibal and Knight. Written by native of Casale Monferrato, Stefano Guazzo, first published in 1574. This was a popular work, translated in English, Latin, French, and Spanish, and was printed well into the seventeenth century.In 1561, the author founded l'Accademia degli Illustrati, a literary academy in his hometown, Casale. Bound without title page, and leaf a8. Based on pagination, this copy is one of Altobello Salicato's 1580s editions of this work, published in Vinegia. In a contemporary vellum binding. Externally, lacking the front board. Some loss and lifting to the backstrip. Vellum is age-toned and marked, as is usual to see. Spine is faded. A small amount of loss of vellum to the rear board. Front endpaper and rear endpaper have been reinforced. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional handling mark and spot. Lacking the title page. Light tide mark to the text, a little heavier to gatherings C, D, I, P, R, S, and Z. Chip to leaf 2O6, resulting in marginal loss to the text.
