An inscribed presentation copy of the first edition of David Loch's very scarce discussion of trade, commerce and manufacturing in late eighteenth century Scotland. With the inscription to the verso of the title page 'Presented by the Author to John Henderson Esqr. as a small testimony of the Respect & Regard he has for Mr Henderson, a friend to his Country & promoter of its Manfctrs.', and with a further author's inscription to verso of final leaf: 'The Reader will please excuse some errors in the Printing occasioned by the hurry of Publication&apos.The bookplate of the dedicatee, George William Mercer Henderson of Fordell, appears to the front pastedown. Henderson (1823-81) owned 1,955 acres of land in Fife, including extensive coal mines.Loch's work is divided into six sections, covering topics including trade disputes between Great Britain and the American Colonies, the London Porter Brewers, fisheries, and woollen manufacturing.ESTC reference T120682With the illustrated bookplate of British ornithologist, conservationist, painter, naval officer, broadcaster and sportsman Peter Markham Scott to the front pastedown. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Fading to back strip, with minor losses to leather at board perimeters. Bookplates to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
