This Dublin edition was later reissued in 1758, with a cancel title.Collated, illustrated with one engraved plate ('Manner and Use of the Ballot'), but lacking portrait frontispiece.This volume includes James Harrington's most celebrated work, 'The Commonwealth of Oceana', a work of political philosophy that was initially censored by Oliver Cromwell, and that discusses an idea of a utopian republic, and ideal constitution.With a biographical study from John Toland. The project was formally launched in 1940, and is generally regarded as one of the most ambitious, authoritative and well-researched projects in British history. The set consists of: Glasgow 1860, York 1864, Sheffield 1865, The National Association for the Promotion of Social Science (NAPSS), often known as the Social Science Association, was a British reformist group founded in 1857 by Lord Brougham. It pursued issues in public health, industrial relations, penal reform, and female education. It was in existence for about 30 years, and was dissolved in 1886. The efforts of George Hastings brought together three groups of the 1850s to form the NAPSS: the Society for Promoting the Amendment of the Law, the National Reformatory Union, and the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women (the Langham Place Group). It took as model the British Association for the Advancement of Science, holding an itinerant annual meeting, which provided a forum for social reformers. In non uniformly bound brown cloth bindings, one with paper label to the spine, and gilt lettering to the spines of the other two volumes. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Boards are held by cords only the 'York 1864' volume. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges are weak on 'Glasgow 1860' and 'York 1864' volumes. Pages are generally bright and clean. To the front pastedowns there is a bookplate for Isabella Wyatt, of West Grinstead Place, Sussex. West Grinstead Place was the seat of Sir Merrick Burrell, Bart. Hayley writes to the preface that he devotes himself 'with a new species of Quixotism, to the service of Ancient Virginity. It is my intention, in the following work, to redress all the wrongs of the autumnal maiden, and to place her, if possible, in a state of honour, content and comfort.' William Hayley was an English writer, who is best known for creating a biography of the poet William Cowper. Hayley's work provides an eighteenth century perspective of the morals, lifestyle and sexuality of older women. A scarce second edition copy of this fascinating historical study of the 'Worshipful Company of Grocers' guild of London; signed by the author and presented to the Treasurer to St Bartholomews Hospital, William Foster White. The 'Grocers' Company' is often cited as the oldest of London's 'Great Twelve City Livery Companies', and ranks second in the Companies order of precedence after the Mercers' Company. This work provides an account of the guild's Hall and the principal events that took place there, a history of the Company, and an extensive biographical examination of the most eminent and distinguished members. Featuring the following ink inscription: 'William Foster White Esq. Treasurer of the Royal Hospital of St Bartholomew from his friend John Benjamin Heath [Signature] January 1856&apos. Copiously illustrated throughout with in-text illustrations and plates, several of which are folding. This work was privately printed. This copy has been rebound in a signed 'Jenny Bevan' binding, with a charming illustrated bookplate of a 'Roy and Nina Merley' tipped to the front pastedown of each volume. The Merleys owned Plaish Hall, Shropshire. This is a stunning Grade I Tudor house, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The home once belonged to Judge William Leighton, who was an amateur poet and sixteenth century composer. The house, as it stands now, was built in two stages for Leighton, who was presiding over a trial of prisoners whilst the home was being completed. Roy and Nina Merley owned the house for thirty-five years and were responsible for reinstating the Tudor style gardens and renovating the house to its former glory. Their bookplate has an image of the house in the background, with a blackbird eating a worm in the foreground. Rebound in a signed quarter cloth binding, with bookbinders label tipped to rear pastedown. Externally excellent, with only minor shelfwear and slight fading to upper extremity of front board and spine. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Author's inscription and signature to half title page, dated '1856&apos. Internally firmly bound, slightly strained very occasionally in places. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean, with the odd light spot to the occasional page. Occasional mark and damp staining to gutters, not affecting text. Very Good Indeed .
