Philip Dormer Stanhope was the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. He was a British statesman, man of letters and wit. The writings were originally published in 1774 under the title Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman. They provide perceptive and nuanced advice for how a gentlemen should interpret manners and social codes. With publisher's adverts to the rear of volume III dated March 1827. No author has been stated in the work, but it has been attributed, at least in part, by Lewis Goldsmith. This work is generally of a biographical nature, but also explores French politics during the French Revolution. Sometimes hostile, it explores the lives of alleged 'virtuous and amiable characters' as well as the lives of 'hostile tyrants&apos. Among them are General Moreau, Napoleon Buonaparte, Louis XVIII, Louis Antoine Henry Bourbon, General Pichegru, and more. This is an émigré work that was edited and published in London. It's title harks back to the British Plutarch of Thomas Mortimer. This copy contains a folding plate in Volume III on page 264, a portrait of General Moreau in Volume I, and a portrait of Louis Antoine Henry Bourbon in Volume III. The portrait previously in Volume II, of General Pichegru, is not included. Uniformly bound in half calf with marble covered boards. Externally, volumes have been rubbed on the spines and corners, and minor shelf wear is present. Spines have faded on all volumes. Internally, front hinge to Volume I is starting slightly but remains firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Internally, scattered spots to the first and last few pages of all volumes. Related to her principal literary theme of moral education for women, she established Rawdon House in Hertfordshire; a school for young ladies intended to apply the principles illustrated in her books to the "moral training, the formation of character, and in some degree the domestic duties of young ladies." Today he is best remembered for writing the private memoirs of his first-cousin Maria Fitzherbert, the secret wife of King George IV.
