Memoirs of the Life of Sir Samuel Romilly, Written by Himself; with a Selection from His Correspondence. Edited by His Sons.
London, John Murray, 1840. First edition. Cloth. The first edition of these memoirs of legal reformer and abolitionist Sir Samuel Romilly. The complete three volume first edition set of this work, with an illustrated frontispiece portrait and folding facsimile of Romilly's handwriting to volume I. Collated, complete.Sir Samuel Romilly, 1757-1818, was a lawyer, politician, and legal reformer. From a background in the commercial world, he became well-connected, and rose to public office and a prominent position in Parliament as Solicitor General.A staunch advocate for legal reform and the eradication of capital punishment, he spent a dozen years of his life on the passage through Parliament of legislative reforms. He sought to eliminate cruel and harsh antiquated punishments, such as drawing and quartering. He was also a vocal opponent of the slave trade, and gave support to William Wilberforce's abolition campaign.Despairing over the recent death of his wife Romilly died by suicide, after which his memoirs were edited and published posthumously by his sons, of which he had six. These three volumes, as evidenced by the library binding and bookplates to the front pastedown of both volumes, once belonged to the Nottingham Reference Library. They are, however, remarkably clean internally despite this. In a rebound cloth library binding. Smart, with only some bumping to spine heads and tails. Library bookplates to front pastedowns. New endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Folds in title page of volume I, with small closed tear in folding plate. The odd spot to first few pages, but pages otherwise clean and bright.
