[Coyer, Gabriel François, abbé].

Includes the "Explication du frontispice". HARDCOVER, bound in contemporary marbled boards, spine with crimson morocco label lettered in gilt, date gilt stamped on foot. Many later editions followed with various paginations, different layout, different publisher's device to title-page, etc. Some pirated editions joined the race, some appearing as "first edition". Gabriel François, abbé Coyer, was a French man of letters and worldly cleric born in 1707. He entered the Society of Jesus, studying humanities and philosophy until he left the order in 1736. In 1741 he became private tutor to the young Duke of Bouillon (Prince of Turenne at the time). There followed public functions that saw him in attendance at some battles of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). His many works include a history of the Polish king Jan Sobieski, travel accounts of Holland and Italy, a study of ancient religions, belles-lettres, and a popular attack on the guild system, Chinki. He became a member of the Royal Academy of England and the Academy of Nancy. It is said that when he visited Voltaire at Ferney and announced his desire to return each year for three months, Voltaire replied that whereas Don Quixote had mistaken inns for castles, Coyer was mistaking castles for inns. He died in 1782. (See Henry C. Clarke: "Commerce, Culture, and Liberty: Readings on Capitalism before Adam Smith", Indianapolis, 2003.) B-2 .

London, Longmans, Green, 1889. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Royal octavo. Pp. (ii), 198. With a beautifully engraved coat-of-arms of the Author printed on the leaf preceding title. With a list of works by the Author. HARDCOVER, bound in the original publisher's full cloth, blind ruled sides, gilt lettering to spine, black lettering to front cover; spine-ends slightly bumped, old institutional stamps and shelf label to first free endpaper, one to title-page, spine bit faded, sunned patch to back cover. The outer ring bears the words "Arthur Crump Sigill". [Provenance:] Previously in the library of the Second Chamber of the States-General of the Netherlands. TIMO-5 OUT .

Schulze-Delitzsch, (Franz Hermann).
Die Abschaffung des geschäftlichen Risico durch Herrn Lassalle. Ein neues Kapitel zum Deutschen Arbeiterkatechismus.
Berlin, Duncker, 1866. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. Pp. 49, (1) publisher's ad. Full-page table. Set in Gothic type. HARDCOVER, contemporary quarter cloth and marbled paper over boards, paper label to spine; small chip to paper on upper board, corner of first free endpaper finger-soiled, stamp to title. In a very good condition, fine interior. ~ FIRST EDITION. A very scarce original copy of Schulze-Delitzsch's attack on Lassalle's "Herr Bastiat-Schulze von Delitzsch, der ökonomische Julian, oder: Capital und Arbeit" (1864) (see here). Franz Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch (1808-1883) was a German jurist, member of the Prussian National Assembly, Chamber of Deputies, and the German Reichstag. He advocated free-trade, unrestricted competition, and self-help rather than state-help. In 1863 he wrote "Capitel zu einem deutschen Arbeiterkatechismus", borrowing his fundamental principles in the main from Bastiat. Ferdinand Lassalle (1825-1864), a German socialist, was the architect of the German labour movement and founder the German Workers' Association. He was the first to speak about "the iron law of wages", defining it as the minimum subsistence pay permitting survival and the raising of children. But the more his revolutionary hopes were disappointed, the more sharply he turned against the middle classes (and Schulze's theories), whose capacity to solve the social question he denied. "Herr Bastiat-Schulze" was his rather assailing reaction to Schulze's book. In 1866, only after Lassalle's death (he was mortally wounded in a duel fought over a lady he intended to marry), Schulze finally answered with his "Die Abschaffung". ~ [Provenance:] From the private library of Dr. Max Menger, with his ink stamp and calligraphed name on spine label.
