Messrs. Rider, Heaton & Co, 1913. Soft Cover. Auction Sale Prospectus Lillesden House and its Estate 1913. Full title: By Direction of Llewellyn F.Lloyd, Esq. - Hawkhurst, Kent - Particulars of the Residential Estate known as Lillesden extending to 491 acres with the most beautiful Gardens and Park in the District. To be offered by Auction as a whole or in eight lots.by Messrs. Knight, Frank & Rutley in the Estate Room, 20 Hanover Square, London W. on Monday, June 23rd., 1913, at 2.30pm precisely. The Lillesden Estate was bought and built by Colonel Edward Loyd. The home was passed down to the son of Edward Loyd and was requisitioned and used in World War I as a hospital for wounded soldiers. After the World War the house and a few acres were sold separately to the Saint Wilfreds Boys Preparatory School in 1922. 14 years after it was sold again and became the Saint Cuthberts Girls School. Sadly, World War II occurred in 1940 and it was requisitioned as a hospital again. After the war was over it became a school again, this time the name was changed to Lillesden and expanded. By 1975, the school merged with Bedgebury and became the Bedgebury Lower School, but was close in 1999. In-keeping with its impressive legacy, this Grade II listed private residence has since been sensitively restored to creat a magnificent collection of individual luxury apartments, whilst creating an exciting next chapter for this historic address.28p describing the 8 lots - Lillesden House, Gardens, Grounds etc; East Heath Farm, The Beeches. Linlithgow - the Prospect of Their Majesties Palace of Linlithgow - Slezar Engraving
Tim Jordan, 1693. . Apparently original Print by John Slezer which has been mounted on thin card.Image from Theatrum Scotiae by John Slezer, 1693. Measures 18 x 11 1/4 (46x28.5cms) Linlithgow Palace rises above loch and town, in this view from the west. Mary, Queen of Scots was born in the palace in 1542. In 1745, almost 50 years after Slezer's view was published in Theatrum Scotiae, the palace was gutted by fire, and it has remained a ruin ever since. The crown on the tower of St Michael's Church to the right was removed in the 1800s, but was replaced in1869 by a replica of the impressive crown seen here on the palace tower. Figures in this view include fishermen in boats and people walking on the palace embankment. The central fold and a long blind tear top right have been repaired with archival tape. Surface a bit duty but would frame well. Mounting has resulted in slight loss of the text bottom left. See scans. . Fair

A List of Travels, Tours, Journeys, Voyages, Cruises, Excursions, Wanderings, Rambles, Visits, Etc. , Relating to Scotland. From Psas 1900
Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 1901. Hardcover. p.431-638. extracted from the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries Scotland Vol XI 1900-1901 and bound in mauve cloth with gilt titling to the spine. Valuable reference source. From Aberdeen University Elphinstone Institute: The starting-point is the bibliography of travels and tours in Scotland compiled by Sir Arthur Mitchell (1901, 1905, 1910). Born in Elgin and educated at the University of Aberdeen, Mitchell was a national authority on the treatment of the insane and no less eminent as an antiquarian and bibliographer. He was also a proto-ethnologist, investigating superstitions of the Highlands as they related to insanity. The value of his bibliography is enhanced by its preface, whose section headings alone reveal the problems he encountered (Difficulty as to Including or Excluding, Books of Little Value not Excluded, Narratives still in Manuscript, Narratives Hidden in Biographies or Magazines, Misleading Titles, Changes in Late Editions) and the variety of genres in which travels and tours could be found (Excursions of Scientific Societies, Guide Books and Itineraries, Botanical, Geological, and other such Excursions, Books showing state of North Britain, Travel with a Special Object). Under the heading Books entered with Hesitation Few, Mitchell explained that his principle had been to include rather than exclude. As a result, his bibliography runs to over 1,000 entries. Of these, 48 date from before 1600, 69 from the period 1600-1700, 49 from 1701-50; 128 from 1751- 1800; and 352 from 1801-50. The book is clean and tight with a few minor marks on the boards. Otherwise, clean tiht and unmarked. See scans. . Very Good
