Printed for Tim. Goodwin, 1793. Hardcover. Translated out of French. 12mo. Bound in original full sheep (slightly rubbed). Spine with raised bands. (xii 176 84 68 16p - index). Title page in red and black within a double-line border. With initial imprimatur leaf - Edmund GBohun Jan 13th 1693. With frontis. portrait (plate) of Imre Thököly signed: P. Bouche scul:. 1st English translation published the same year as the French edition. Apparently the most detailed contemporary biography of Imre Teckely (Tokoly). All original with few initials and number on front pastedown. Little worming at top of prelims. The leather boards are poor with peeling alongside spine and loss of most of the spine. Prelims held by strong cords. There is a small rust mark o pages21-24 and a tear across a lower edge on page 77/78 but without loss of text. Complete in need of a new spine. This Guide was published in paperback in individual parts, whilst they are all in this volume. 33 Routes are indexed extending from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Inverness and the Outer Isles. The bulk of the book covers the immediate area within a days reach of Oban. Plates of Oban, Goatfell in Arran, Inverary, Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Staffa, Iona etc. p.375-380 offer a detailed summsry of angling in Mull and the area. Four folding maps and another of Cuilin Mountains. Many sepia plates - but two later plates missing as is common - I have never seen them. Large folding map in a rear pocket which has been repaired with archival tape. Otherwise all complete and clean with bright gilt but a snag on the top of the rear cover as seen. But nevertheless VG. Minimal foxing. Neat owners name stamp above list of illustrations. VG. 386p + period adverts to front and rear. Dated 1882 on adverts - the earliest edition I have seen is 1877. Mr. Gladstone, who came into office with a majority of 100, found himself, last Wednesday morning, in a minority of three. The cause of his downfall was the desertion of the Irish members at the bidding of the Roman Catholic Bishops, from whom they take their ideas. This fact is, in itself, the best commentary on Mr. Gladstone's Irish policy (New York Times 1873. 19p original pamphlet with sewn binding. Without marks or signatures. An insight into the ways of life of the members of a Whist and Supper club in Glasgow which, at the beginning of the 19th century, many of whom were related to each other. After the minutes there are often detailed biographies of the members. Common names are Blackburn, Anderson,Bogle, Campbell Buchanan, Douglas, Dunlop etc. Book tight and clean with an interesting bookplate of Sir James French on front pastedown. Fep evenly browned. Boards clean but corners bumped and some wear along spine edge and to title label on spine. See scans. . Good +

Library marks and corner torn from front cover without loss of text. Ex-libris with on;y evidence a few stamps. Folding charts and tables but almost all text devoted to reports of witnesses - 10,000 individual paragraphs reporting their replies to questions. e.g. from evidence offered by Mrs.C.S.Edwards (Matron of Lambeth Workhouse) - in relation to mental work or stimulus for Workhouse Inmates - Q. Supposing you made their tea depend on their doing a certain number of sums -- A I daresay they would try to do them, but whether they would succeed is another matter. Q. And do you not think that either by making the thing attractive by magic lanterns or somthing like that, or, on the other hand, by taking away their tea unless they did sums or learnt a bit of poetry off by heart.. Covers evidence from Workhouse Matrons, District Medical Officers, Clerks to boards of Guardians etc to many London Burghs - West Ham, Edmonton, Fulham, Stepney, Greenwich, Bethnal Green, Holborn,St.Pancras and etc Some damage to top of first few leaves near spine not affecting text. .
