George Smith - a Memoir with Some Pages of Autobiography
For Private Circulation, 1902. Hardcover. George Smith (1834-1901) ,was a publisher and founder of the D.N.B. which he subsidised and saw it finally into print before his death. His father had started the publishing house of Smith, Elder & Co. He is widely acknowledged to have inspired the character of Graham Bretton in Charlotte Brontë's novel Villette (as he himself believed). Contains a memoir from the supplement to the Dictionary of National Biography, some pages of autobiography including Charlotte Bronte and an In Memoriam by Leslie Stephen. 151pages with three plates. Sumptuous binding - full pebbled leather with gilt lines and initials on front board. All edges gilt and marbled endpapers. Apparently bound by Riviere but no printed evidence to that effect. Compiled by his widow and for Private Circulation among my husband's friends. Dated August 1902. Condition - leather boards bit dull and have some marks with damage and some superficial loss at spine ends. Internally edges toned and two signatures of previous owners on prelims - E.T.Cook 1902 and Malcolm Ewing 1930. Little foxing of plates but still a very collectable copy of this rare book. See scans and email for more. . Good +
