 Junius, Junius Stat Nominis Umbra
Junius
Junius Stat Nominis Umbra
London, Gale, Curtis and Fenner et al, 1813. Leather. A profusely illustrated edition of the well known critical letters regarding King George III's government. In a lovely crushed morocco binding. This work was penned by an anonymous polemicist and was published in two volumes in 1772. This is a collection of private and open letters as well as other letters in-reply from people to whom Junius had written between 1769 and 1772. The addresees of the letters include the Duke of Grafton, Edward Weston, Duke of Bedford, Zeno and more. Junius is a pseudonym for the unknown author of these letters. With ten plates. Collated, lacking 'Sir William Draper' and 'Duke of Grafton' plates. Junius' identity is a topic of great debate and may remain unsolved unless further evidence is found. Many scholars believe the identification may be that of Sir Philip Francis. Portraits to this work are by Mr Edward Bocquet, an historical engraver, after original paintings. In a full morocco binding. Externally, very smart. Patches of rubbing to the joints, boards and extremities. Light rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with scattered spots to pages, heavier to 352-358. Good . Ill.: Mr Edward Bocquet. Good .

Junius: Including Letters by the Same Writer, Under Other Signatures (Now First Collected) to Which Are Added His Confidential Correspondence with Mr. Wilkes, and His Private Letters Addressed to Mr. H.S. Woodfall. In Three Volumes
London , F.C. and J. Rivington et al, 1812. Leather. An attractive set of this collection of controversial political letters from the mysterious 'Junius', published in the Public Advertiser between 1769 and 1772. Features frontispieces in every volume and numerous further plates, some folding, including examples of Junius's handwriting and portraits of eighteenth-century political figures. Junius (fl. 1768–1773), political writer, was the pseudonym adopted by the author (or possibly authors) of a series of letters which appeared once or twice monthly (sometimes more often) in the Public Advertiser, a leading London newspaper owned by Henry Sampson Woodfall, between 21 January 1769 and 21 January 1772. In this series Junius—named after the popular republican hero Lucius Junius Brutus—opposed the policies of George III and the administrations of the serving prime ministers, the duke of Grafton and Lord North. Now a classic of English political commentary, the correspondence owes its influence to three interrelated factors: the high whig philosophy espoused to attack tory policies and celebrated political personalities; the literary power of the letters, one of the most effective uses of slanderous polemic ever employed in English political controversy; and, finally, the uncertainty surrounding their authorship. DNB In half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, extremely attractive and in excellent condition with very little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Lovely and bright and clean throughout, with just the odd lightly spotted page, particularly the facsimile handwriting plates, or instance of slight offsetting from the plates. Near Fine . Ill.: None. Near Fine .
