Black letter throughout. Collated: Both works complete referencing Copac. A sixteenth-century antiquarian and politician, William Lambarde was a writer on legal subjects. He was accepted to Lincoln's Inn, one of the four Inns of Court of London. Eirenarcha being an antiquated word for 'justice of the peace', this publication was a manual for the contemporary constables - a precursor to our modern policing system - and became the standard work on the subject. Rebacked in a quarter calf binding with morocco boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing to boards. Bumping to extremities. Front joint starting but sound. Faded library stamp to boards. Joseph Lancaster was an English Quaker and public education innovator, renowned for developing a variant of the monitorial system with a recursive method of instruction and delivery. As a precursor to the modern-day method of 'peer tutoring', within this method students were rewarded for successfully passing on information to the next pupil. Printed and Sold by J. Lancaster Free School Borough Road; Darton and Harvey Gracechurch Street and Hatchard Piccadilly This work succinctly details Lancaster's methods and was written by Lancaster shortly before he travelled to the United States to lecture and promote his ideas. The height of popularity of his system came in the first decades of the nineteenth century, and in 1808 "The Society for Promoting the Lancasterian System for the Education of the Poor" was created. This is a very important work in the history of education. Rebound in a lovely quarter cloth binding with marbled paper boards and morocco label tipped to spine. Externally lovely with minor shelfwear to extremities and head and tail of spine. Hinges reinforced. Bookseller's label tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. An uncommon first edition of the work.In the publishers original cloth with gilt illustration to the front board. With a frontispiece and 113 monochrome illustrations over plates and vignettes. The work was written by Finnish Philosopher Gunna Landtman. Landtman was also a sociology and philosophy professor and is considered to be the first modern sociological anthropologist. Landtman lived with the Kiwai Papuans for two years, where he gathered research for this work. This work looks at the life's of the Kiwai Papuans through the eyes of Rousseau's theory of the ideal community. This theory states that the most ideal society is based of men being true to their human nature, which he explains means freedom of will. Publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally in very good condition with slight fading to the spine, bumping to the spine resulting in rubbing and minor rubbing and marking to the boards. A first edition of this scarce 20th century ethnographical work on Kiwai Papuans by sociologist and philosopher Gunnar Landtman A first edition of this scarce ethnographical work on Kiwai Papuans, the Mawatta, and the Masingle peoples. With 113 illustrations, collated but not complete, as three plates are missing between pages 22 and 25, and two plates are missing at pages 30 and 31. Having lived with the Kiwai Papuans between 1910 and 1912, Finnish sociologist and philosopher Gunnar Landtman follows his volume on Kiwi Papuan folklore with this examination of their ways of life. Comprised of 33 chapters, Landtman discusses a broad range of topics from housing, hunting, and harvesting, to astrology, meteorology, and social organisation. The work also contains records of the habits and beliefs of the Mawatta people on the mainland of Papua New Guinea. The book was rebound by the Fife Education Committee County Library. There is a torn bookplate with advice for users of the Fife Education Committee library to the front pastedown, and purple ink stamps to the recto of the front endpaper, and the title page. Small ink markings to the verso of the title page. Pages v and 19 have small tape repairs. Rebound in a half calf library binding. Externally, generally smart with a little rubbing to the boards.
