With essays on the 'situation and treatment of old maids in general', 'the ingenuity of old maids', 'old maids in ancient history' and 'christian and other modern old maids&apos. With the bookplate of the Knightley family of Fawsley Hall to the recto of front endpaper. Fawsley hall is a landscape park created by the Knightley family in Northamptonshire. To the front pastedowns there is a bookplate for Isabella Wyatt, of West Grinstead Place, Sussex. West Grinstead Place was the seat of Sir Merrick Burrell, Bart. Hayley writes to the preface that he devotes himself 'with a new species of Quixotism, to the service of Ancient Virginity. It is my intention, in the following work, to redress all the wrongs of the autumnal maiden, and to place her, if possible, in a state of honour, content and comfort.' William Hayley was an English writer, who is best known for creating a biography of the poet William Cowper. Hayley's work provides an eighteenth century perspective of the morals, lifestyle and sexuality of older women. A fascinating essay collection, discussing a commonly ostracised group of people, particularly at the time of writing. Bound without half titles. In uniform full calf bindings. A scarce second edition copy of this fascinating historical study of the 'Worshipful Company of Grocers' guild of London; signed by the author and presented to the Treasurer to St Bartholomews Hospital, William Foster White. The 'Grocers' Company' is often cited as the oldest of London's 'Great Twelve City Livery Companies', and ranks second in the Companies order of precedence after the Mercers' Company. This work provides an account of the guild's Hall and the principal events that took place there, a history of the Company, and an extensive biographical examination of the most eminent and distinguished members. Featuring the following ink inscription: 'William Foster White Esq. Treasurer of the Royal Hospital of St Bartholomew from his friend John Benjamin Heath [Signature] January 1856&apos. Copiously illustrated throughout with in-text illustrations and plates, several of which are folding. This work was privately printed. This copy has been rebound in a signed 'Jenny Bevan' binding, with a charming illustrated bookplate of a 'Roy and Nina Merley' tipped to the front pastedown of each volume. The Merleys owned Plaish Hall, Shropshire. This is a stunning Grade I Tudor house, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The home once belonged to Judge William Leighton, who was an amateur poet and sixteenth century composer. The house, as it stands now, was built in two stages for Leighton, who was presiding over a trial of prisoners whilst the home was being completed. Roy and Nina Merley owned the house for thirty-five years and were responsible for reinstating the Tudor style gardens and renovating the house to its former glory. Their bookplate has an image of the house in the background, with a blackbird eating a worm in the foreground. Rebound in a signed quarter cloth binding, with bookbinders label tipped to rear pastedown. Externally excellent, with only minor shelfwear and slight fading to upper extremity of front board and spine. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Author's inscription and signature to half title page, dated '1856&apos. Internally firmly bound, slightly strained very occasionally in places. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean, with the odd light spot to the occasional page. Occasional mark and damp staining to gutters, not affecting text. Very Good Indeed . Bound without endpapers.Sixteen pages of adverts to the rear.An early work by physician and travel writer Sir Henry Holland, looking at the nature of agriculture in his home county, Cheshire. Before beginning his medical studies in Edinburgh, Holland was employed by the Board of Agriculture, upon the suggestion of Sir John Stanley, to report on the agriculture of Cheshire. This work provides a detailed study on agriculture in the county at the beginning of the nineteenth century, with proposals on how to improve its state. Holland was a cousin of Elizabeth Gaskell, and his great-uncle was Josiah Wedgwood. Later in life Holland gained fame for his travel writing. At a party hosted by relatives in 1836, he read pages of Darwin's journal he sent from his Beagle voyage.
