. Atlas in folio and two text volumes in 4to, all in original printed wrappers. Pp. xii, 139; x, 548. With 11 coloured maps, mostly folded, 15 coloured folding panoramas, 66 plates made from photographs, another 43 folding plates and two plates with diagrams. The atlas folder contains 8 loose folding maps. As issued, entirely uncut. Volume one slightly shaken, small tear at foot of spine. First edition. During Sven Hedin's third expedition he travelled across Persia for some months at the end of 1905 and the beginning of 1906. The results of his cartographic work of Eastern Persia are to be found in this work. The text is richly illustrated with photographs, water colour panoramas, and maps. The maps in the folder were compiled from Hedin's sketches and summarized in eight sheets. The second volume includes " A Route Survey across Eastern Persia", a section on Persian place names giving their meaning in German. Hess pp. 51-2. Kish, To the Heart of Asia, pp. 79-80.

Contemporary full calf, spine with six raised bands, richly decorated in gilt and with title label, worn and hinges cracked, spine ends and corners chipped. Bookplates (of Edouard Montet, French orientalist and Patrick Lort-Phillips) and old inscriptions on front paste down. With some staining and partly with tiny wormholes in the inner margin (no loss).First edition of one of the major European works on Orientalism compiled by d'Herbelot and completed and published by orientalist Antoine Galland after d'Herbelot's death. Herbelot spent thirty years working on this alphabeticallly arranged encyclopaedia of the Orient, including much information of Arabic, Persian and Turkish literature and history. It is partly based on the extensive Arabic bibliography (the Kashf al-Zunun) of Hadji Khalifa. A second edition was published in 1776 and a supplement by Claude de Visdelou in 1780. Cf Atabey 572. . Thick 4to. Pp. (xix), (1) errata, 1152 + pp. (8) including two pages of facsimile letters, two engraved plates of music, directions to the binder and publisher's adv. With engraved front, two folding engraved maps, seventeen hand-coloured aquatints (seven double-page) and one plan. Partly with some minor foxing, some plates with discolouration and one plate with small tear. Contemporary full calf, expertly rebacked to style with a flat spine elaborated with gilt and red title label. A handsome copy of the first edition with a remarkable provenance.John Cam Hobhouse (1786-1869) known as Lord Broughton was a close friend of Lord Byron with whom he made this journey to Albania, Greece and Turkey, in particular to Janina (Ioannina). These letters include detailed descriptions of the places en route, as well as meetings with various characters, including the notorious Ali Pasha of Tepelena. The beautiful hand-coloured plates depict costumes, highlighted in gold, views and historical sites. According to Atabey, the plates were done from drawings by the British architect Charles Cockerell and the German landscape painter Jacob Linckh. They participated in an expedition in 1810 to the temples of Aphaia in Aegina and of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae. Atabey 584. Blackmer 821. Navari Greek Civilization, 330. Provenance: Mary Hamilton Bruce (née Nisbet, 1777-1855), was the first wife of British diplomat Thomas Bruce 7th Earl of Elgin during his term as Ambassador extraordinary to the Ottoman Empire. Bruce became famous for the "Elgin marbles", a collection of classical Greek marble sculptures which were removed from the Parthenon and other places in Athens, and brought to Britain. (today kept at the British Museum).

Late (probably the last) edition of this very popular account about the Holy Land, first published in 1768. In 1732, Höpken and Carleson were sent out to investigate trading possibilities with ports around the Mediterranean Sea. Later they negotiated with the Grand Visir in Constantinople and successfully concluded a treaty of commerce, giving the Swedes free access to all Turkish ports. This is a narrative of their journey in 1733 to the Holy Land where they visited Nazareth, Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

Old ownership signature on front paste down. A few pages and the plates with light foxing. First edition, extremely rare. This work dealing with the role of women in society and female education in Lebanon and Syria is one of the earliest of its kind. Henry Harris Jessup (1832-1910) was an American missionary who came to Syria (now Lebanon) in 1855 where he stayed and worked until his death. He served as acting pastor of the Syrian Church of Beirut for more than thirty years. He functioned as secretary of the Asfuriyeh Hospital for the Insane from its establishment and also becoming missionary editor of the Arabic Journal, El Nesrah. Jessup writes about the situation for women in the Mohammedan world in general but he also explains about the Druze religion; the extreme Shi'ite group Nusayriyyah; missionary schools for girls in Syria (and Lebanon); Druze women; Beduin Arabs; the cities of Homs and Aleppo; and at last there is a chapter written for children.
