. Pp. xi, 296. Contemporary half calf, spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering, rubbed and hinges weak. Partly some minor foxing. Original wrappers bound in. Jules Oppert was a member of the French Archeological Mission to Mesopotamia 1851-54, during which the site of ancient Babylon was identified. Deals with the language, mainly the grammar, and gives detailed descriptions of different inscriptions from Bisoutoun, Elvend, Persépolis, Nakch-i-Roustam and Xerxès.

Contemporary limp vellum, title in manuscript on spine, spine ends slightly chipped, some staining to covers. First edition as such.Pagninus (1470-1536) joined the Dominican Order in 1487, where he became a disciple of Girolamo Savonarola. In 1528 he published a Latin translation of the entire Bible. The following year he published a Hebrew Lexicon for Catholic ministers, republished many times. This is an abridged edition of the Lexicon, edited by Franciscus Raphelengius (Frans van Ravelingen), and added to the Royal Polyglot in 1572. See Fürst iii, 62 (other editions). Steinschneider 1511. Occasionally some light staining. Contemporary half morocco on silk-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, rubbed and covers faded and small loss of silk, a.e.g. First edition. Julia Pardoe (1806-62), a British author, travelled with her father to Constantinople in 1835. Her extensive work on the city and its people and customs became very popular at the time, not least due to the beautiful illustrations by Bartlett. The plates depict wonderful views, the mausoleum and the mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, Hammam scenes, Armory Bazaar, scenes from Scutari (Üsküdar) including the cemetery and fountain, etc. Several editions appeared. Housed in a specially made box, cloth on marbled paper covers. Old ownership signature on title dated Constantinople 1880. First edition. Rare.Abel Pavet de Courteille (1821-89) was a French orientalist who specialised in the study of the Turkish language. He was a member of the Société Asiatique, professor of Turkish language and literature at the Collège de France. He issued this dictionary to facilitate the reading of significant works written in Chagatai language. Chagatai is an extinct Turkic literary language that was once widely spoken in Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Xinjiang and Kyrgyzstan). It remained the common literary language there until beginning of 20th century. The Emperor Babur (1483-1530) was the founder of the Mughal dynasty. He is considered a national hero in Uzbekistan and many of his poems have become popular Uzbek folk songs. Abu al-Ghazi Bahadur (1603-63), Khan of Khiva, wrote two important historical works of the Turkic people in Chagatai language. Ali-Shir Nava'i (1551-1501) a Turkic poet and politician. He is considered by many to be the founder of early Turkic literature because of his distinguished Chagatai language poetry. Zaunmüller 379.

Rare Swedish edition translated from the original "Voyage en Morée, a Constantinople, en Albanie" (Paris 1805). Pouqueville, a medical doctor and member of the Scientific Commission was attached to Napoleon's expedition to Egypt. He was captured by pirates on his return journey and landed in Greece where he spent a year before he was taken to Constantinople and imprisoned for two years. Marracci (1612-1700) was an Italian oriental scholar and professor of Arabic at the College of Wisdom in Paris.
