Uncut, crisp copy in contemporary marbled wrappers, worn, most of spine detached, internally fine. First edition based on Jacob Golius famous "Lexicon Arabico-Latinum" (1653) which was the standard for 150 years until Freytag's dictionary appeared. Jacob's brother Everard Scheidius, professor of oriental languages at Harderwijk, assisted in this work and in 1768 acquired the Arabic types from Leiden. Schnurrer 107. Smitskamp PO 315. Seid Mustapha (or Kücûk Seyyid Mustafa) was a Turkish engineer, employed by Selim III, in whose misfortunes he became involved, and perished in the rebellion of Constantinople in 1808. His work emphasis the need to learn military discipline and technology from Europe. It was first published in 1803 at the printing press established by the sultan Selim III which was destroyed by the insurgent Janizaries in 1808. A French edition appeared in 1810, translated by L.M. Langles. This Swedish translation by Gustaf Spinchorn, legation preacher at the Swedish mission in Constantinople, includes an interesting introduction and comments by him. Cf Atabey 664.

Title printed in red and black and with engraved vignette. Many engraved head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, decorated in blind, corners nicely restored, rebacked with five raised bands and title label. First edition. Thomas Shawn was chaplain to the English factory at Algiers from 1722 to 1733. During this period he travelled to Egypt, Palestine, Cyprus and around North Africa. "These travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures." . 4to. Uncut copy in later wrappers. Pp. (iv), 74. Last leaf creased at upper right corner, and a small tear at the margin. An annotated collection of Oriental books and manuscripts donated by Sparwenfeld to the Library of the University of Upsala. Sparwenfeld (1655-1727) was a Swedish diplomat and linguist who is known to speak fourteen languages including Arabic. He acquired the collection during his travels in Egypt, Syria and Tunisia at the end of the 17th century. The collection comprises sixty-one manuscripts, of which forty-one in Arabic, Persian and Turkish. Further it contains forty-two printed books in various languages, including several in Chinese. Three of the Chinese books were presented to Sparwenfeld by Philippe Couplet in 1690. At the end a few more manuscripts are described. It starts with the founder Osman I (or Osman Gazi 1258-1326) and ends with Suleiman the Magnificent who died in 1566. Sprinchorn has partly based the account on works by Kantemir, Ricaut and D'Ohsson but supplemented with own material. Sprinchorn (1780-1823) served as a preacher at the Swedish legation in Constantinople for a period of six years. No library copies found except in Sweden.

First edition of this account devoted to the history of the Lycian kingdom. Dame Freya Madeleine Stark (1893-1993) was a British-Italian explorer who wrote many books on her travels in the Middle East and Afghanistan. She was inspired to travel by the copy of The Arabian Nights given to her as a child. During the Second World War she was a South Arab expert at the Ministry of Information in London. This is Stark's second narrative of her travels to Turkey, following her work "Iona". She travelled by sea along the Asia Minor coast. After the Second World War she travelled extensively to explore historical sites and learn about culture and tradition.
