. Large 8vo. Pp. xx, 651. With 2 folding maps (of which one coloured of the Dead Sea), 12 full page plates (4 chromolithograph views), and many textual illustrations. Marginal stain to frontispiece and title, and some staining to a few plates. Original pictorial cloth, decorated in gilt, somewhat rubbed. First edition of this well written acccount of the author's extensive travels in the Holy Land. He was particulary interested in the basin of the Dead Sea, the districts east of Jordan, as being the least accessible to travellers. This is Martin Trostius' main work and it was the most complete Syriac lexicon published up to this time. He was the first to draw attention to Syriac phraesology on a larger scale. . 12mo. Pp. (lvi), 304. Modern paper covered boards. Title with small burn hole and some browning in parts. First edition which has been published many times in French and English. Another issue with imprint "chez Thomas Ioly Librairie Iuré" was published in the same year. Murtada ibn al-'Afif was an Islamic historian from Cairo who lived between 1154 and 1237. His account covers the history, antiquities, legends, etc. of Egypt and includes the stories of Noah, Joseph and Moses. The original Arabic manuscript (or a copy) was found in Cardinal Mazarin's library by the French Arabist Pierre Vattier (1623-67) who translated it into French. The first work contains Villehardouin's account of the Conquest of Constantinople which is the basic source for our knowledge of the sack of Constantinople by the French and Venetian crusader forces and the establishment of the Latin empire in the East. Geoffrei de Villehardouin (1160- ca 1212), a French knight and historian, participated in and chronicled the Fourth Crusade, which he began to write in 1207. It is one of the oldest books composed in French prose. The second work about the Latin empire in the Levant is by Charles du Fresne, sieur du Cange (1620-88), a distinguished French philologist and historian of the Middle Ages and Byzantium. This work comprises an English version of Arrian's account of the celebrated voyage of Nearchus of Crete from the Indus to the Tigris in 325 B.C. Nearchus, a commander of Alexander the Great's fleet, undertook several independent expeditions during Alexander's campaigns across Asia. Arrian, a Greek historian and statesman during the Roman period, wrote about events that had occurred several hundred years before his time.
