ROJAS ZORRILLA, Francisco de
Comedia famosa. El desafio de Carlos V. De Don Francisco de Roxas.
[n.p., 17--?] 4to. 31, [1] p. Quires signed A-D in fours (A2 mis-signed A3). Caption title. At head of title: 'Num. 8' (right hand corner). Title-page very lightly spotted and some very light damp-staining throughout. Modern marbled boards. Book label of William Salloch, Ossining, New York ***** The historical basis of this play is the siege of Vienna in 1532 by Suleiman the Magnificent (Solimán) and his support of the claims of John Zapolya (Juan Sepusio) to the throne of Hungary against the claims of Don Fernando, brother of Charles V. In the play Solimán challenges Carlos to settle the war by a duel; the play ends with Solimán deserting Juan Sepusio, who in turn begs the Emperor's forgiveness. To sustain interest, a romantic and comic sub-plot is introduced: a Galician soldier-lackey, Buscarruido (Noise Seeker) is pursued by an amorous hermaphrodite, Mari Bernardo. A copy of this edition is located in the Biblioteca Histórica Cultural, Madrid. Whitehead R179 & R180 are different 18th-century editions (with a Salamanca imprint). Bainton 229 is also a different edition. No edition in Bergman & Szmuk. Not in Penney.

RUIZ ALCOHOLADO / RUYZ ALCOHALADO, Pedro.
Printer's woodcut device on title, woodcut initials. Some worming, almost all marginal with the exception of one very small wormhole which partially affects an occasional single letter. 19th-century quarter blue leather (scuffed), marbled paper-covered boards (scuffed). Ownership inscription on title page: "De la iglesia maior de san lucar de Barrama". Oval ink ownership stamp on p.17: "Casa de Azevedo" with eagle. ***** Until the Council of Trent there was a wide variety of breviaries in use throughout the western Church. In response, however, to a decree of that Council, Pope Pius V produced the Breviarium pianum (1568), a reformed version of the medieval Roman breviary. This was imposed on all churches and religious orders except those which could show that their local rites had a continuous history of 200 years. In Spain this resulted in considerable confusion, a problem which Ruiz Alcoholado addressed in several works on the breviary. Volume 2 of the Tractado was published under the title Ceremonial romano para missas cantadas y rezadas at Alcalà, por los herederos de Juan Gracian, a costa de Juan de Montoya, in 1589.
