NATIONAL PALACE MUSEUM, TAIPEI COUNTY, TAIWAN, R.O.C.
Catalog of the Special Exhibition of K'Ang-Hsi, Yung-Cheng and Chi'En-Lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'Ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum
National Palace Museum, Taipei County, Taiwan, R.O.C. 1988, 2nd Edition. Soft cover. Book, Chinese and English text and captions.; Paperback; 24.8 x 25.2 cm; 0.983 Kg; 197 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely scuffs on the front cover, spine and back cover. Edgeworn. Minor signs of wear in the interior.; Catalogue from an exhibition at the National Palace Museum, Taipei in 1986.; "This exhibit takes the famous ware of K'ang-shi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung reigns during the flourishing Ch'ing period to be the theme of an exhibit which display the best of the best. In all 171 object are on view. The glazes used on many of these wares followed Sung, Yuan, and Ming formulas. They are so close as to be difficult to tell apart from earlier glazes. On the other hand, there are newly created red glazes, famille rose, and painted enamels glazes which have very distinct and beautiful colors. They are extremely complicated, marvelously, incomparably crafted. The shapes of some of the vessels imitate famous Ting, Ju, Kuan and Ko wares with easy fluency. At times they reproduce the shapes of ancient Chinese ritual bronzes - particularly the ting, yi, tsun, and lei vessel types. Utensils for the scholar's studio were produced, like brush handles, ink rests, water containers, seals, all without any hesitation or technical limitations. When bronze, laquer, cloisonne enamel or wood was imitated, the physical qualities of the material were all captured and there is a great resemblance. The craftsmen's abilities to manipulate clay was miraculous and bordered on the divine." excerpt from the foreword by Ch'in Hsiao-yi, Director, October 1986. Good/No Jacket.

Chinese Cultural Art Treasures: National Palace Museum Illustrated Handbook
The National Palace Museum, Republic of China. 1971, 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued); 16.5 x 23 cm; 1 Kg; 115 pages plus addendum with 138 colour and black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior in very good condition.; "Throughout the past forty years, China's ancient cultural treasures have been carefully preserved. Those art treasures that were removed to Taiwan date from as early as the Sang and Chou dynasties, and as late as the Ming and Ching dynasties. These treasures, dating from every period in Chinese history, are of the finest quality. To enable both Chinese and foreign scholars to fully understand the collection, and to make connoisseurship and research more convenient, the Palace Museum selected a group of choice art objects, and in November 1965, published a handbook entitled, Chinese Cultural Art Treasures. Within a few months every copy of the first edition of the handbook had been sold. It is the hope of the Museum that this second edition of the handbook, which corrects those typographical errors that inadvertently were included in the first edtiion, will further expand the Museum's contribution to society." excerpt from the foreword to the second edition by Chiang Fu-tsung, Director, April 1966, Taipei. The slipcase show signs of wear.; "The porcelain collection of the National Palace Museum is noted for its quantity and quality. The collection boasts of such rare treasures as Sung dynasty Ju ware the most exquisite examples of celadon ware and fine-enamelled ware of the Ch'ing dynasty which represent the apogee of the art of porcelain making reached in the last dynasty. With the exception of those pieces in the National Palace Museum there are very few examples of these fine porcelains presently extant, a factor contributing to the interest and high esteem shown in the first volume of Masterworks of Chinese Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, published in 1969. In volume II we have selected fifty items from the Yuan, Ming and Ch'ing dynasties. Although it was not possible in these two volumes to show all the great porcelain treasures found in the collection of the National Palace Museum it is possible to get a good idea of our collection from these representative samples." preface by Chiang Fu-tsung, Director, April, 1973, Taipei, Republic of China. Calligraphy is the art of writing characters in an expressive manner employing the use of the brush. The most ancient written characters were written on oracle bones, or were inscriptions on bronze vessels found in the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It was during the late Warring States, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties that scripts such as official, cursive, running and regular scripts developed. Thus a multi-script system evolved for Chinese written characters. Different scripts were used for different regions and for different times, and this diversity let newer forms take root and flower." excerpt from the introduction. Good/No Jacket.

NGAI, PAULINE
A Thousand Auspicious Meanings: Chinese Porcelain Teapots from the Sapientia Collection for the Domestic Market (Volumes I & II) (Chinese Edition)
Jorge Welsh Research & Publishing, Lisbon/London. 2022, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781838216344). Hardcover. Book, Chinese text; Hardcover in slipcase (2 VOLUMES); 594 pages, 626 colour illustrations and 2 black & white illustrations; 312 colour illustrations; 23,5 x 29,7 cm; 4.4 kg; Volume One - Introduction: Teapots for the Domestic Market; Volume Two - Teapots for the Domestic Market.; This two-volume book focuses on the artistic, cultural, and historical motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots made for the domestic market, and will ultimately be part of a four-volume set, the third and fourth volumes to be dedicated to teapots made for the export market. The collection was started by Franco Cutrupia in 1981, who, soon after arriving in China, became fascinated by the beauty, variety of shapes, and decorative motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots. Later he was joined in his passion for Chinese porcelain by his wife, Pauline Ngai, a Chinese history major and author of this book. The book examines the auspicious motifs that appear in Chinese porcelain decoration, explored through those found on the teapots from the Sapientia Collection. Through the study of these motifs, the author opens up a fascinating insight into Chinese culture and the interpretation of the meanings and significance of each motif. It goes much further than simply cataloguing a collection, exploring deep into Chinese culture and its long and intricate history. The first volume offers a comprehensive introduction, providing a wide perspective on the development and production of containers for a variety of drinking liquids and later teapots, from the Neolithic era through to the 1980's. The second volume discusses 193 of the Sapientia Collection of porcelain teapots, made for the domestic market, covering a period from the 18th to the 20th century. The author, Pauline Ngai, deciphers each motif, their embodied stories, auspicious meanings, and symbols, transforming these treasured objects into sources from which to better understand Chinese culture and history. This book, the result of many years of original research, is a serious reference work and encyclopaedic in interpreting those scenes and auspicious symbols originally intended for the Chinese public. As such it is a valuable resource for all those studying or interested in the subject. New/No Jacket.
