VOLUME II, with more than 400 pages and 330 illustrations, focus on orders from Kings and Queens of Portugal, Religious Orders and the Clergy, from the second half of the 17th until the end of the 19th centuries. The following eight informative essays by leading scholars precede the catalogue: Preface, by Prof. Dr. Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão; Carreira da Índia, by Dr. Bruno Gonçalves Neves; The Crown and Military Orders in Portugal, by Dom Vasco Xavier Teles da Gama; From private luxury to the public ostentation of wealth and power (Royal carriages at the National Carriage Museum) by Dr. Silvana Bessone; The Royal Galliotts in the Maritime Museum, by Portuguese-Navy-Captain José António Rodrigues Pereira: Royal Super-libros from the Braganza dynasty, by António Tavares de Carvalho; Ecclesiastical Heraldry on Chinese Porcelain Imported by the Portuguese, by Dr. Miguel Metelo de Seixas; and António Vieira and his defence of the People of the Nation, by Prof. Célia da Silva Tavares. VOLUME III, with more than 288 pages and 155 illustrations, focus on orders by the Portuguese aristocracy from the late seventeenth century until the mid-18th century, presenting also a summary of all the published information in the 20th century. The following three informative essays by leading scholars precede the catalogue: News about porcelana in a 1590's letter from Jesuit Duarte Sande, by Professor Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão; Trade with the Orient: forms of operation and commercial participation on the India Route in the 16th century, by Dr. Bruno Gonçalves Neves and also "E entre gente remota edificaram novo Reino, que tanto sublimaram" Portuguese Society in the Orient - 16th and 17th Century, by Professor Célia Cristina da Silva Tavares. SARGENT, WILLIAM R.; KERR, ROSE (ESSAY)
Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics - from the Peabody Essex Museum
Yale University Press. 2012, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780300169751). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English Text; Hardcover (with Dust Jacket); 568 Pages with 428 colour ilustrations; 31. 4 x 25 cm; 3.62 Kg; Beginning in the sixteenth century when Portuguese traders started importing blue and white porcelain to Europe, Chinese ceramics manufacturers produced goods specifically for export to the West. The industry flourished through the early twentieth century as the market for fine porcelain expanded in Europe and the Americas. Among the Peabody Essex Museum's founders in 1799 were sea captains and supercargoes involved in extensive trade with Asia, and many of the remarkable examples of export wares they brought back provided a foundation for the Museum's world renowned collection of Chinese export ceramics. Written by William R. Sargent, a leading expert in the field, Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics is one of the most authoritative sources on this topic. Its scholarly entries on 287 representative objects that date from the fifteenth to the twentieth century are divided into sections by type of ware. Although these examples only hint at the Museum's vast holding, together they encompass its broad range of Chinese export ceramics. An essay on Jingdezhen, the "Porcelain City," by Rose Kerr, a glossary of ceramics terminology, and appendix on armorials, and an extensive bibliography all contribute to making this an invaluable resource.; Out of print. Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration: Four Dynasties of Jingdezhen Porcelain
Co-published by Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art and School of Oriental & African Studies. 1992, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 981003721X). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardover (with dust jacket); 24.2 x 31.4 cm; 1.253 Kg; 176 pages with various colour illustrations; Used book with sign of wear on the dust jacket and interior. Previous owner sticker glued to the front free endpaper, that also show a wear mark at the middle of the page. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. ; Joint exhibition from the Collections of the Percival David Foundation and CP Lin; “The year 1992 is very significant for the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art. Not only does it mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sir Percival David, but it was also 40 years ago on 10th June 1952 that the Foundation opened to the public. We are celebrating these anniversaries in two ways. In view of all recent archaeological discoveries made at the site of the Imperial kiln at Jingdezhen, we are holding a colloquy on the subject of the Porcelains of Jingdezhen. We are also mounting the current exhibition Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration – Four Dynasties of Jingdezhen Porcelains, in the Foundation’s Lady David Gallery. We are particularly grateful to Mr C P Lin for his great generosity in lending so many of his own beautiful and rare pieces to this exhibition. It seems entirely fitting in this anniversary year that the Foundation should be mounting a joint exhibition with Mr C P Lin whose collecting is marked by a deep appreciation not only of the outstanding aesthetic qualities of Chinese porcelains, but also their great scholarly interest. This too was the approach taken by Sir Percival David, who taught himself to read the Chinese language specifically to facilitate his study of the vast body of literature written by Chinese scholars. It is significant too that the ceramic collections of both Mr C P Lin and Sir Percival David predominantly contain fine Imperial wares, and it is these porcelains reflecting as they do the tastes and interests of the Chinese court that form the major part of the current exhibition.” excerpt from the preface by M D MacWilliam, Director, School of Oriental Studies University of London, June, 1992. Since well over half the ceramics in the collection were made at China's main porcelain producing centre, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province, the wares from these kilns provide the subject for this colloquy. The Jingdezhen in kilns themselves and their products have provided some of the most fascinating archaeological finds in the People's Republica of China in recent years, and we were fortunate to have two speakers from China with first-hand knowledge of this important excavated material. Other contributors pursued a range of topics including technological developments, the organization of the kilns, the significance of ceremonial wares, specific decorative motifs, their origins and evolution, archaism, trading networks, the wares made for particular markets, and the influence of missionaires." excerpt from the foreword by Rosemary E. Held at Asia House Gallery New York; Seattle Art Museum Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth; and Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, The Avery Brundage Collection.; Chinese ceramics have been treasured in Japan for over 1200 years. This volume, which focuses on excavated pieces and heirlooms (densei-hin) brought to Japan between the eight and seventeenth centuries, provides a new perspective on China's ceramic art. Assembled here are some of the finest examples of Chinese ceramics acquired by Japanese connoisseurs over the centuries. They range from bold T'ang three-colour wares to luminous Sung celadons and delicate Ming porcelains decorated in vivid polychrome overglazed enamels. The prized possessions of courtiers, warlords, tea masters, and merchants, many of these pieces became so well-known that they were given evocative nicknames. Several, made to order for Japanese customers, have no counterpart in Western collections. In their introductory essays, Seizo Hayashiya, Curator of Applied Arts at the Tokyo National Museum, and Henry Trubner, Associate Director of the Seattle Art Museum, outline the history of Chinese ceramics in Japan and discuss the cultural relationship that has long linked these two countries. The same applies to the Japanese porcelain. The Islamic pottery is also fully representative, while the Turkish pottery of the Isnik kilns is one of the three finest collections in the world. Hundreds of Sukothai and Lan Na wares of an undreamed quality have been dug up by the hilltribe people. It is now established beyond doubt that Thai ceramics rank among the finest in the world. They are not poor provincial Chinese wares produced by potters who could not afford cobalt to make real blue and white decoration. They are an indigenous art form that reveals the genius and glory of the Thai people in the Golden Age of Ayuthya and Lan Na more surely even than do the Buddhist sculptures. An art form that originated many centuries before and which died out by the end of the C16th probably as a result of the Burmese invasions." excerpt from the introduction. Fair/Dust Jacket Included.

STAFF OF THE FAR EASTERN DEPARTMENT; SHIH, HSIO-YEN (INTRODUCTION)
Chinese Art in the Royal Ontario Museum
The Royal Ontario Museum, Canada. 1972, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 25.5 x 21 cm.; 1.1 Kg.; 243 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that has scuffs and tears. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; "The present publication does not attempt to offer an archaeological or art historical survey of China. Rather it is arranged to convey the major strengths of our holdings. Ceramics are pre-eminent and include the greatest number of examples. Bronzes, though less numerous, are among the most ancient and rarest of Chinese artifacts. The Museum's examples are distinguished by virtue of having come almost directly from their sites of discovery, for the most part. Tomb figurines are now prized by Western collectors for their immediacy of representational effect, and by Chinese for their vivid expression of historical mores. At the time the Museum acquired most of its collection in this category, few Westerners even knew what these small sculptures were, while Chinese looked askance at their collection as a result of the desecration of ancestral burials. Other categories are well represented, though with less numerical and, sometimes, aesthetic strengh." excerpt from the introduction by Hsio-Yen Shih, Curator, Royal Ontario Museum, June 1972. The slipcase shows minor signs of wear. The carton box has signs of wear throughout, namely a minor stain and some wear marks on the outside.; "The art of Rosanjin Kitaoji is in a sort of chaos even today. Rosanjin Kitaoji often said "Nothing should be discussed in a generalized manner". And, this is true of his art more than anything else. As a matter of fact, he among his contemporaries, is the one whose art is the most difficult to define. He was a versatile artist who mastered calligraphy, letter engraving, painting, pottery, cooking and architectural design. He achieved a high level and established his own artistic style in each field. His pottery was the greatest in number among his productions and is the most widely known. However the idea that he was just a potter is not right. He was originally a calligrapher and seal-engraver. Here in this book I am trying to trace his artistic life as faithfully as possible in the perspective of history. For that purpose, the first half of this volume is occupied by photographs illustrating his art. In the following sections, I add my criticism and comment." excerpt from the 1972 preface.
