The Emperor's Lost Treasure: Remnants of Unrecorded Chenghua Porcelain
Times Editions, Singapore. 2003. (ISBN: 9812049134). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover cloth (with dust jacket); 25 x 28 cm; 1.5 Kg; 224 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Minor signs of wear on the dust jacket, which is now protected with a clearcover. Interior in very good condition apart a tiny part of two pages in the end that show signs of have been slightly glued to each other.; Chenghua porcelain is among the most valuable and highly prized of imperial wares from the Ming period. It is also the rarest of Ming porcelain because so few of what must once have been a stupendous collection of wares made for Emperor Chenghua are known to have survived following Chenghua's death in 1487. Despite five centuries of clandestine treasure hunting by grave robbers and secretive collectors, no palpable cache of Chengua porcelain appears to have come to light. In writing this book, the author does not claim to have found the answer to the mistery of Emperor Chenghua's lost treasure. However, he is, in his opinion, privy to a private collection of same exceptional pieces of Chenghua porcelain. These pieces were embargoed from publication for about 30 years because many are radically different from authenticated examples of Chenghua wares in extant collections. For the first time, a selection from this collection is published here, together with a scholarly essay which, while acknowledging indebtedness to established authorities when traversing familiar ground, does not balk at expressing contrary opinions whenever justified. The result is an unprecedented work on Chenghua porcelain. Whether a Chengua expert or layperson, the reader will find Section II a feast for the eye while studying the various photographs and mulling over the delicacy of the potting and design, the quiet splendour of the luminous colours or the lustrous gleam of the ivory-toned or the smoky green glaze of the illustrated Chenghua porcelain. Could these pieces possibly constitute some of the fabled lost treasures of Emperor Chenghua? The author leaves it to the reader to decide. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector's Guide
Times Editions.Marshall Cavendish, Singapore. 2004. (ISBN: 9812327584). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21.2 x 29 cm; 0.808 Kg; 144 pages with colour illustrations.; Used books with minor signs of wear on the dust jacket and interior. Looks as new. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The term 'Straits Chinese porcelain' refers specifically to a little known category of nineteenth century, polychrome enamelled export porcelain, which was exclusively made for the unique community of Straits-born Chinese whose ancestors first settled down in Malacca at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Most extant pieces may, however be dated between the reign of Tao Kuan (1821-50) and the beginning of the Min Kuo era (1920), or thereabouts. 'Straits Chinese porcelain' differs from the traditional types of wares made in China, not only in the shapes of the potting but also in the style of the decorative designs. Where mandarin types of utensils tended to be sparsely ornamented and lightly painted in pale washes of enamels, nonya ware is characterised by its baroque exuberance of decorative motifs and the most vivid and colourful famille rose enamels. Despite its distinctively ornate appearance, "Straits Chinese porcelain" is decorated with but one recurrent theme, namely, the phoenix-and-tree peony design. Equally remarkable is the fact that shapes are starkly simple and functional. There are no eccentric-looking pots encumbered with superfluous ormolu works or, for that matter, ceramic curiosities simulating human and animal forms and other unusual objects. This book is notable for the new light it sheds on several other hitherto unsuspected varieties of Straits Chinese porcelain, namely, several kinds of blue and white porcelain utensils, a small group of enameled Yi-hsing wares, mainly small teapots, and some types of nineteenth century Japanese porcelain painted in crowded motifs and strong colours. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

MEYER, LAURE
Black Africa: Masks Sculpture Jewelry
Finest SA, Éditions Pierre Terrail, France. 2001. Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 24 x 30 cm; 2.198 Kg; 224 pages.; As new, with signs of shelf wear.; One of the great merits of this book is to address the arts of Black Africa thematically: Importance capital of religion and magic, belief in occult powers granted everywhere, ancestral worship accompanied by sacrifices, funeral rites, initiation ceremonies, masked dances, powerful secret societies, leaders will prestige, desire for adornment or beauty search for the humblest objects, these are the deep sources of traditional African art. In this context, the artist responsible for the creation of works indispensables had only relative freedom, but what a result! A careful aesthetic analysis shows how the problems were solved brilliantly: Insider shapes, bold in the conceptualization, shortcuts evocative and it is no coincidence that African art has influenced so profoundly modern art, Modigliani Matisse, Vlaminck and Derain through cubism of Picasso and Juan Gris. Capital and complete a book which reveals and explains the secrets and roots arts of Black Africa. Laure Meyer, born in Africa, art historian and journalist, well known to all lovers of African art, gives us in this book all the keys to "Understanding African art". Good/No Jacket.

COHEN, MICHAEL; AND MOTLEY, WILLIAM; FUCHS II, RONALD W. (FOREWORD)
Mandarin and Menagerie, Chinese and Japanese Export Ceramic Figures, Volume I: The James E. Sowell Collection
Cohen & Cohen, Reigate, Surrey, United Kingdom. 2008, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780953718597). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 25.5 x 32 cm; 2,409 kg; 303 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This book covers the largest and most important collection of Chinese and Export figures currently existing in the world. Collected by James E. Sowell of Dallas, Texas, there are over 170 items including over 50 bird figures, a dozen dogs, and a unique pair of leopards possibly made for the Imperial Summer Palace. It includes a history of the European trade with Canton and contains an informative guide to the dating of many of these pieces, with many pictures of the bases of the figures. The book catalogues the James E. Sowell collection in detail, arraging the animals according to approximate zoological taxanomic groups and commenting on some of the scientific knowledge available at the time. Traditional theory says that the Chinese potters were simply copying European species and models but the book proposes that, with a few significant exceptions, the resulting porcelain are inspired by Chinese fauna. Mainly consisting of Chinese export figures of the 17th, 18th and early 19th century, there are also a few realted figures from Japanese kilns. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

MICHAELSON, CAROL
Gilded Dragons: Buried Treasures from China's Golden Ages
British Museum Press, London. 1999, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780714114897). Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback; 22.5 x 28 cm; 0.858 Kg; With 180 colour and 25 black and white illustrations.; Used book with minor signs of wear on the exterior. The interior is in good condition with minor signs of wear. Some pages are slightly bent on the bottom side.; INCLUDES LOOSE FLYER FROM THE EXHIBITION HELD AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM IN 2000.; Some of the most striking and evocative artistic and archaeological objects ever found in China date from the Tang dynasty, which spanned three centuries from AD 618 to 906. Regarded by the Chinese as one of their most glorious golden ages, when their empire was the richest and most powerful political unit in the world, it was characterized by cultural brilliance, territorial expansion and great prosperity. The Tang capital at Chang'an (present-day Xi'an), marking the eastern end of the Silk Routes, was a wealthy cosmopolitan city, benefiting from the flourishing trade in exotic foods, textiles, furs and fine horses via the oasis towns of the Taklamakan Desert. Persians and Turks, Jews and Muslims all lived and worked in the city of 'Enduring Peace', and the eclectic motifs and technical virtuosity of Tang craftsmen can be seen in the splendid gold and silver vessels and jewellery found buried in local tombs, hoards and crypts. Buddhism was an especially pervasive foreign influence, and many precious ritual objects, donated by generations of the imperial family, were recently discovered in an underground palace below the famous Famensi Buddhist temple. This book presents a fascinating panorama of Chinese life during two 'golden ages': the Tang dynasty and its predecessor the Han, which ruled from the third century BC to the third century AD. Over 120 once-buried treasures - some never before seen outside China - are here illustrated in full colour. Good/No Jacket.

Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East: Topkapi and Ardebil (3 Volume Set)
Hong Kong University Press. 1981, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (3 volume set in slipcase with two clasps.).; 23 x 30.5 cm; 7 Kg; Black and white and a few colour illustrations throughout.; Volume I-Introduction, ISBN 962-209-004-4, 273 pages; Volume II-The Topkapi Palace Museum, ISBN 962-209-005-2, 282 pages; Volume III-The Ardebil Shrine Collection, ISBN 962-209-006-0, 372 pages.; Used books with signs of wear on the interior and exterior, as well as the slipcase. The lettering on the front cover and spine is slightly worn. Very good set overall. Interior as new, except for stamps from a previous owner on the rear of the front cover of each volume. The interior of the slipcase is also stamped.; "This volume, together with the one on the collection of Chinese porcelain from the Topkapi Sarayi in Istambul and the Ardebil Shrine in Tehran, was first published by Gakugei Shorin, Tokyo, in 1972 in a three-volume Japanese limited edition, now out of print. This completely revised and rearranged edition in English preserves the scope and all the illustrations of the original edition. In connection with the Topkapi and Ardebil collections special mention must be made to the 1930 Topkapi catalogue by Ernst Zimmermann, John Alexander Pope (Topkapi in 1952 and the Ardebil 1956), as well as articles by Mehdi Bahrami, Sir Percival David, R.L. Hobson and Soame Jenyns. All these have contributed much to my understanding of the collections and their history" excerpt from Volume I.; "When I first stepped into the exhibition room of the Topkpai Saray Museum I was surprised. About five thousand pieces of Chinese porcelain were on display but an even greater number, estimated at six thousand pieces, were still stored in three basements. But the size of the collection is matched in importance by its value, for there are some forty pieces in the collection which are among the finest Chinese blue-and-white ware, made in the fourteenth century. We have had to revise our previous belief the Yuan period was a dark age because of these excellent Yuan pieces which have survived in this collection so far away from China. The blue-and-white porcelain from the Yuan to the Ch'ing period is the largest group in the Topkapi collection but there are also celadons, white, yellow, blue, brown, and polychrome wares. So, to the baptism of Istanbul with the various cultures, Hittite, Egyptian, Roman, Byzantine, Persian, and Islamic, one must now add that of a Chinese ceramic culture. The porcelain of many kinds dates from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century and can be compared in size and quality with the best collections elsewhere." excerpt from Volume II; "What we have come to know as the Ardebil collection of Chinese porcelain consists of about eight hundred pieces of blue-and-white, celadon, polychrome and other porcelains, nearly all of which are not now at Ardebil. Most of these pieces have been removed to the Archaeological Museum in Tehran. The Ardebil collection has special importance, not only because such a collection was made and preserved at all, near the Caspian Sea so far from its place of manufacture in China, but also because it is know that the main collection dates from not later than 1611 when Shab Abbas presented it to the Shrine in the town of Ardebil from which it takes its name and where it was housed until 1935. Even now the important collection, which includes such treasures as nearly forty pieces of fourteenth-century blue-and-white Chinese porcelain, is only partially known. I hope this volume will be welcomed for its extensive illustrations, many in colour, of a large part of the collection, including many of which have not been published before. In addition I have illustrated pieces from the collection which are now in Isfahan and Tabriz. It is reasonable to assume that the latest pieces could not be dated later than the thirty-fifth year of the Wan-li period of the Ming dynasty and the earliest in the middle of the fourteenth century." excerpt from Volume III. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 22.1 x 29.5 cm; 0.797 Kg; 128 pages with black and white and colour illustrations; Used book with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is price clipped and shows some yellowing on the rear, which is only seen if the dust jacket is removed.; Oriental works of art, once the exclusive preserve of the elderly and, above all, the rich, are now being actively collected by young people of limited means. Of course, the very finest items will always command millionaire prices, but it is increasingly realized that there is a mass of lesser prices widely available for very modest sums. Collecting Oriental Antiques is a guide, specially written for ordinary people, to what is easily obtainable, where to get advice and how to begin a collection, with advice on dealers, auction houses, reproductions, fakes and much else that often puzzles or alarms the beginner. The book deals with the six main areas of interest to collectors. A long first chapter on ceramics, by a specialist in the field, leads the reader gently through the maze of styles and reigns. The rest of the book, by Judith Moorhouse, covers the superb bronzes, jade carvings, enamels, lacquer and small ivory and wood carvings, including Japanese netsuke. There is a map, a date chart and a long illustrated appendix of condensed information on such things as reign marks, decorative motifs, bronze and jade shapes, and the complex of Buddhist iconography. After receiving a degree in Chinese from London University and spending a year studying in Taiwan, Judith Moorhouse joined the staff of Bluett & Sons, the leading London dealers in Oriental works of art. INCLUDES PRICE LIST with some of the lots crossed by pencil. ; Catalogue from the exhibition of small jade carvings, mostly animals, principally from the collection of the late Dr Isaac Newton at Bluett & Sons, London from the 13th of to the 24 July 1981, London.; "The present exhibition primarily reflects the taste of one collector who felt that by bringing together sufficient examples the serious study of post-Han jades could be furthered. In the finest tradition of scholarship Dr Newton allowed us a free hand in selecting or rejecting pieces from his collection as we wished. He further kindly allowed us to add a small number of carvings from other sources and a few important loans to help make the catalogue and exhibition more complete. Although the dating of many of the pieces is discussed in detail the principal aim of this catalogue has been to record by word and illustration the jade carvings that the exhibition comprises. Emphasis has been laid throughout upon the technical make-up of each piece in the hope that observation of such details will advance the study of such carvings." excerpt from the preface by Brian Morgan. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR HUGH MOSS.; "In this book I believe Hugh Moss has made a quite conclusive case for the authenticity of the yu chih marked porcelains. By doing so he has corrected a far-reaching error of recent Western scholarship in the field of Ch'ing porcelain. An essential part of his case rests on the distinction between the works of three main centres of decoration of Ch'ing porcelain manufactured at Ching-tź Chźn. It has, perhaps, been the failure to make that distinction which has caused so much trouble in this most dificult area of Chinese ceramic study. I should also like to observe, with the privilege of hindsight of someone who in the past accepted unquestioningly the dismissal of the yu chic wares, that the traditionally accepted opinion of Chinese scholars should perhaps never have been so readily rejected, nor so little attention given to positive re-attribution of the yu chic wares to some later period, as is necessary if their authenticity is to be denied. Chinese Pottery Burial Objects of the Sui and T'Ang Dynasties
Hugh M.Moss Ltd. London. 1970, 1st Edition. Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 20 x 25.5 cm; 0.376 Kg; 80 pages with black and white illustrations; Signs of wear in the back cover, front cover and spine. Mark on the cover, spine and back cover due to the removal of an old sticker. No highlighting or writing is text. Good readable copy.; Catalogue from the exhibition Chinese Pottery Burial Objects of the Sui and T'ang Dynasties with special reference to the scientific testing of pottery wares, and the works of the forger. Arranged in conjunction with the Research Laboratory for Archaeology, Oxford.; "When one thinks of T'ang ceramics it is not the wares which were in everyday life use during the period which spring to mind, but the prancing horses and camels, and the dancers and musicians, together with the exotic, partially glazed bowls, ewers and vases. These are the wares recovered from tombs when the railways ploughed their way across China. The point which has never been stressed strongly enough is that they were essentially burial objects and not items of everyday use. It is conjectural whether these vessels bore any relationship to the secular wares in use at the time-any more than did the animals, with their strikingly weird glazes and pigments, resemble their living counterparts. The wares of Yueh and Hsing, in use at the time, were much more suitable for household use by virtue of their shapes and impervious bodies (achieved by firing at high temperatures) than were the partially glazed burial obejcts. These burial wares do not form any sort of link with the wares of the Sung, which were to follow, as do the Yueh and Hsing pieces; and so the burial objects of the T'ang may perhaps be considered as an art form with less domestic and more ritual significance than is normally associated with ceramics. Because of this, far more emotive creativeness was entailed in their manufacture and these intense feelings are able to reach out over the centuries to excite a kind of appreciation today which is not aroused by any type of pottery. With this in mind, this exhibition has been assembled to attempt to crystallize and enhance the spiritual aura which surrounds its contents." excerpt from the introduction by Adrian M. Joseph and Hugh M. Moss, June, 1970. Fair/No Jacket.
